  4. (cross-posted) in Fountain Pen Geeks forum) Santini pens with Flexy nibs must have ebonite feeds. Some of the pens I'm looking at are made of acrylic resin and others are ebonite. The former cost 259 euros and the latter cost 359 euros. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? What do you get for 100 euros more when you get an ebonite pen? Examples of Ebonites are Libra Blackberry, Mora, Sand, Acqua, Cumberland, Ginger, Ethiopia and Lava. Examples of Acrylic Resins are Libra Black, Nut, Lord, Etna, Grape, Laurel, Diamod Blue, Lavender, Royal Blue, and Red.

The pen is rather attractive. The Green Echo was preceded by the Solar Prominence (Kouen) in 2021 and the Blue Wave (Kaiha) in 2020. 6. Yesterday, I stopped at my local Danitrio fountain pen dealer and stumbled upon a parade of stratospheric pens. I just had to snap some pictures. Unbelievably, these pens represent but a fraction of the hyper pens available in the same trays. First up is the Genkai style 100 Kids design--it is truly extraordinary. I have several from the same artist but none like this! Next a Kaijin style Ebisu (A god of seven) design by Kogaku Then a Yokuzuna aka kyokuchi style emperor dragon design--indescribable beauty and technical prowess The self described #50 gigantic nib, which looks like custom work.

    Ranga Giant 9B

Ranga, Model Giant 9B ebonite in Crimson Red with black specs I started out with relatively small and slim pens (e.g. Waterman Expert III). I soon found out that larger and girthier pens suit my hands better. Which is strange as I tend to have very small handwriting and prefer western extra fine and/or Japanese fine nibs. But somehow a bigger pen makes me write neater and helps me to hold the pen without tensioning my muscles that much. So, the facts: Manufacturer: Ranga & Co Model: Giant 9B Material: Ebonite Nib: Jowo #6 steel (EF) - unit Filling system: 3 in 1 (eye dropped) Capped: 175 mm Uncapped: 152 mm Posted: 207 mm Section: 12 – 13 mm ______________________________________________________________________ Appearance & Design – Oversized classic torpedo Well yeah, there is doubt about it, this is a giant pen (as the name suggests). It’s a clipless design and the seam between the cap and barrel is hardly noticeable. This gives it a classical yet sleek appearance. It is by no means an understated design, put this on your desk and people will notice. Construction & Quality - Craftmanship The pen feels lovely in the hand and is well balanced and is lightweight. The threading on the pen is unintrusive and well made. The pen uncaps in just under 1 turn! The treading on the barrel is quite long and this enhances the felling of security when eye dropping this pen. The ergonomics of the pen really fits my hand quite nicely. Weight & Dimensions - Long, girthy, yet lightweight This pen is surprisingly light! With such a big pen I expected it to be heavy but no, this weights no more than, say, a Pilot Custom 823 (by feel, as I don’t own a scale). For size comparison I show the pen with some well-known pens, hopefully this gives you an idea. Nib & Performance – It’s a Jowo #6 The extra fine steel #6 Jowo nib perform great out of the box (cleaned), no misalignment, no flow issues and smooth. The ink flow is generous enough to show the characters of the ink. I matched it with Akkerman Ink #17 (Staten-Generaal Rood), this suits the pen nicely IMHO. So, nothing to complain here. Filling System & Maintenance – Your choice With the 3 in 1 filling system, you can do whatever you want. There is a Smith standard international converter included with the pen. I chose to eye dropper it as I dislike refilling pens constantly (I write a lot) and like a big ink capacity. Cleaning is straight forward and easy as you can take the pen apart. Cost & Value – Great value For just a little over € 74,- this is a great value for your money pen. Especially if you consider it’s handmade, made of ebonite, huge number nib options and send within 2 weeks (order, produced and shipped!!). The packaging is great and customer service is impeccable Conclusion – Again thumbs up for Ranga 👍 All in all, again a lovely pen made by Ranga Pens. I have this pen inked-up and at the ready at my desk and use it mainly for longer writing session, the size and girth of the pen gives me a relaxed writing experience. It’s a pleasure to write with this pen.

  10. This is my Danitrio Hyotan Special edition Maki-e F-49 Blue Dragon LE. There are only 30 of these pens produced by the artist Yuji. This dragon does, however, appear on another pen, a Mikado model with more involved maki-e that retailed for far more than this pen. Ranga Model 4C - review

Ranga, Model 4C ebonite in green/black ripple I heard from this penmaker via FPN and YouTube videos. As I tend to be drawn to ebonite I was immediately interested in this brand. After I found out that they are hand made in India it only enforced the initial appeal. I lived in Nepal for a while, and I really learned to appreciate the craftsmanship and the idea of supporting a small family business. For me it was a no-brainer to order a pen (actually 4) from Ranga. So, the facts: Manufacturer: Ranga & Co Model: 4C Material: Ebonite (green ripple) Nib: Jowo #6 steel (EF) - unit Filling system: 3 in 1 (eye dropped) Capped: 154 mm Uncapped: 137 mm Posted: 189 mm Section: 9,6 – 11,1 mm (11-12,5 advertised) ______________________________________________________________________ Appearance & Design (8) – Classic design The design of the pen is simple and classic, yet the material looks stunning. This combination makes it an appealing pen. It is a slightly larger pen but not oversized. The design and material is understated and this makes it also great in a business environment. Construction & Quality (7) – Lovely with little flaws The threading on the pen is great and unintrusive. The threading on the section is extremely long and that enhances the feeling of being able to securely eye dropper this pen. The pen uncaps with just under 1 turn! That is great for quick notetaking. The material is lightweight, and the feel of the ebonite is lovely. There are 3 little flaws: Cap and barrel don’t align totally (small seam noticeable); The backside of the clip is corroding; The pen burps quite often when eye dropper filled. There are just minor flaws that do not bother me. After all it is handmade and this ads to the character of the pen Weight & Dimensions (7,5) – Good length and lightweight The length of the pen really fits my hands and writing style. Posted it is way to long for my taste. I don’t have a scale, but the pen feels super lightweight (even fully inked up). The section could be a bit girthier for my tase. Close to the nib it’s only 9,6 mm and that makes it feel a bit finicky to me. Nib & Performance (8) – It’s a Jowo #6 The #6 Jowo nib performs as expected (out of the box) It’s quite dry and a little misaligned. But after some tuning it is smooth and gives a nice EF line with a good wet flow. This extra fine nib is now wet enough to really show the character of the ink (in this case Akkerman Shocking Blue #5) The feed seems to be filled quite quickly and this sometimes results in burping (eye dropper filled) if you keep the pen nib-up for a few minutes this is gone again. Filling System & Maintenance (8) – Your choice With the 3 in 1 filling system, you can do whatever you want. There is a converter included with the pen. I chose to eye dropper it as I dislike refilling pens and like a big ink capacity. But I might have to start using the converter due to the burping problem and I can’t have this during a meeting. I really like that you can use cartridges, a convertor or eye dropper for filling the pen. Always good to have options. Cost & Value (10) – Can’t complain here For just a little over € 68,- this is a great value for your money pen. Especially if you consider it’s handmade, made of ebonite, huge number nib options and send within 2 weeks (order, produced and shipped!!). The packaging is great and reminds me of my time in Nepal. Conclusion (Final score [48,5/6]: 8 ) – Thumbs up for Ranga All in all, I’m very satisfied with the pen and it is one of my daily writers at this moment. Mr. Kandan (who does the customer service, amongst other things) is great and really understands what customer service should be like. In two words: polite and helpful! I can certainly recommend Ranga pens P.S. I now own 4: The Majestic, 4C, 8B and Giant 9B and all of them write lovely.

  16. Hello everyone. ASA pens from Chennai is making all the right noises these days, with their beautiful and unique Nauka and Trans-nauka making the rounds and getting praise from everyone. Today I am going to review the first ebonite pen that I bought from ASA, the ‘Writer’, which gets somewhat less attention than their other offerings. My concern before buying any pens from ASA was the size of their pens, most of which are pretty large for my preference. And so one fine day I messaged Mr. Subramanium and he suggested either ‘Writer’ or ‘Genius’ and I settled for the former. I chose ‘Writer’ because this pen has the cap flushed with the body of the pen. This particular design feature seemed appealing to me. The ASA Writer, note the cap flushed with the body and the name inscription lining with ASA branding I didn’t have any idea about ebonite pens before buying this pen and Mr. Subramanium helped a lot in deciding the particulars like the nib, the finish, filling system and the site of inscription. I bought a matte/bakul finish of black ebonite with a German made medium nib-feed unit branded as ‘Versace’. I was very impressed with the pen after I received it and since then it has been one of my most reliable writers. 1. Appearance & Design (9/10): ASA Writer is a beautiful traditional cigar shaped pen with gentle tapering towards the lower end of body. The section also tapers in a smooth fashion. The cap is flushed with the body. The clip is a standard ASA ball end clip with good fit and springiness. The design feature I don’t like is the cap taking almost three turns to open. For a person who continually caps and uncaps his pen, this pen requires much effort in this respect. I have my name inscribed on the cap and that name inscription is in line with the branding just at the top end of the body. That’s a nice little bit of detailing. There is a small ring like protrusion at the top of section, just beneath the nib which probably seals the section to the cap when closed. This doesn’t pose problem while gripping. The matte/bakul finish is very attractive over the body and cap. The section is glossy ebonite. I have been using this pen for long, but the glossy section has not got many scratches. This is a light weight and well balanced pen. No pungent smell from the pen. The Writer, note the glossy section and the ring like structure near the top end of section 2. Construction & Quality (9/10): The ebonite is of good quality. The nib and ebonite feed also feels very well built. I ordered the pen with a schmidt converter which again looks solid. The cap looks thin at the border, and there is no end ring to support it. But it seems very unlikely that the cap will break with regular usage. One negative point is that the threads over section is bound to accumulate some dirt over use. I don't know foe sure, but this may have to do with static electricity formed on ebonite. 3. Weight & Dimensions (7/10): It’s a light weight pen. The dimensions are as follows Pen Length Capped 145 mm Pen Length Uncapped 130 cm. Pen Length Posted 150 mm Average Barrel diameter 14 mm at the section base & 12 mm at taper end Average Section diameter 12 mm at Base and 11mm near Lip Average Cap diameter 15 mm This pen feels very comfortable and well balanced unposted, while it becomes too large and awkward after posting. I never use any of my pen posted except the miniature pens like Pilot petit mini, so that is not an issue for me. it slips easily into hand and writes right away. Nib & Performance (9/10): The #5 versace nib-feed combo that came with this pen is amazing. It is smooth with very generous flow and good line consistency. I was so impressed with this nib that I ordered my ASA Rainbow Acrylic pen with the same nib and once again I was bowled over by its performance. Later I swapped the nib with a JoWo 1.1 stub nib bought from ASA. This JoWo nib is a beautiful writer as well with perfect smoothness and flow. No feathering or blotting or burping, ink and paper remaining the same as other pens. Both nibs have very little flex. Line variations with 1.1 nib is good. There is no edginess or catching the paper at turns while writing with this stub, even at a high speed. 5. Filling System & Maintenance (10/10): This pen is 3-in-1, which means one can use it as either eyedropper, with a schmidt converter or with standard international cartridges. I have always used this pen with converter as it offers quick hassle free filling and keeps the barrel clean. No burping or any leakage noted when I tried it as an eyedropper. As mentioned earlier, the converter is of very good quality, can be disassembled and cleaned easily and fits perfectly with the body. The cap and clip 6. Cost & Value (9/10): This pen is valued at INR 1500 (38$ ). It’s a pretty impressive considering the beautiful features and 3-in-1 filling system. This has the potential to become one of the daily workhorse of any fountain pen user with little maintenance. Conclusion (Final score, 53/60): I ordered this pen as my first ebonite pen and it turned out pretty good. This pen from ASA has got little recognition, when by all standards it is one of the best pens they have to offer. You can order this pen from their website. Be sure to discuss any doubts with Mr. Subramanium before placing an order. Writing sample Have a nice day. Good bye.
  17. Hi!. I own a beauty Wahl Eversharp desk fountain pen. It was a gift my mother received n the 1950's. I think it's an ebonite Signature model manufactured between 1920 and 1930, but im not sure. The base is engraved "WAHL EVERSHARP-GOLD FILLED MADE IN CHICAGO, U.S.A.". The nib "WAHL EVERSHARP, 14 K, 2". Somebody know something about?. Thanks!. Jorge.

  20. I'll just get right to it, starting with the hard facts: The Acriv Ebowrite Master is an oversized ebonite eyedropper with a crimped titanium nib. It measures 167mm capped, and 149mm uncapped. It posts, but... 149mm uncapped. Here it is next to a Lamy Al-Star: Brimful with ink it weighs 33gm. I paid $40 for the pen, it shipped for free, and was delivered to the US in about 5 weeks from the day I placed the order. It came with a genuine leather, zipper case, that struggles to contain the pen. I'm not a fan of zippered cases, but this one is actually rather nice and well made. Just a bit too small. The pen itself, is also well made. It's straight, no unevenness in the profile and the cap screws on straight. It has a matte, almost stealth-like, brushed finish. The matte effect is mostly due to very fine ebonite dust, however. After rubbing it clean with a paper towel and a dab of No-Oxi-Oil, it looks more like fine wood grain. Not glossy, but not stealthy either. I find it looks better, now. Lamy 2000-like. The section, like the rest of the pen, is made of ebonite. I'm a bit disappointed that it has a smooth finish. I also wish it had a slightly concave profile, rather than the straight taper. The cap takes 1 1/4 turns to unscrew, the barrel requires 8 turns. Both screw on tight. After several weeks of use I have yet to experience dry-outs or leaks. The barrel interior was full of ebonite dust and flakes, and required a thorough cleaning. I used No-Oxi-Oil and paper towels, and followed up with a thin coat of silicone grease. Pay attention to all threads as they tend to trap ebonite dust. The pen works only as an eyedropper. I did not try to measure ink capacity, but I'd say it's 4ml or more. The pen does have some other minor quality issues. The etching on the clip is not dead center, and the section lip has a rough edge. Also, after cleaning the exterior some flaws in the ebonite became visible; one orange spot and a few dings. They are all pinpoint sized (see 5th photo from the top) and barely noticeable. The crimped nib is somewhat scratchy. It's not awful, you can live with it, but it is scratchy. Nothing some 6000 grade Micromesh can't fix. Don't overdo it, though. Titanium, though hard, is much softer than Iridium. The feed is very wet. Too wet for anything other than Tomoe River, Clairefontaine, or similar. Too wet for the Fine this nib is supposed to be. It would have been just right if the nib was flexy. However, even though the nib seems to have some bounce, in practice it can't be called anything other than stiff. Verdict: This pen is worthy of a much better nib than the one that came with it. I have a vintage flex #8 nib from a parted-out Good Service that might fit. A #6 Jowo or Bock also might do the trick.

    Ebonite: Safe?

Good Morning, I recently purchased a wonderful Gama Forever fountain pen in a beautiful glossy black finish. One distinguishing factor of this and many other Indian eyedropper pens is the fact that they are made from ebonite, aka vulcanite, aka hard rubber. I am sure that in this forum many are familiar with this material. It is the first time dealing with it for me, personally, so I had this question: Is the gas that Ebonite emits when new or when heated "safe"? I mean "safe" in the sense that it does not pose any detrimental long-term effects to my health. I am aware of the ubiquity of this material in pen manufacturing of yesteryear, so I would think it is! But I just wanted a peace of mind. I look forward to your contributions. Nurmister Edit: I write this due to my recent acquaintance to Volatile Organic Compounds, a set of harmful gases emitted by numerous petroleum-based products. Luckily, I suspect that ebonite does not fall under such a category since: i. Formic acid is used only during the(raw?) rubber manufacturing process. ii. Sulfur is used for vulcanization (but the rubber itself should be desulfurized before further processing, hopefully). iii. Ebonite hates petroleum!

  24. Has anybody heard of this ebonite fountain pen from Dindigul? https://www.indiamart.com/shop-sigma/ebonite-pens.html#handmade-ebonite-fountain-pen-m012 It popped up in a google search. I have never heard of nor used "indiamart.com". The carved decorations at the ends of the pens looked interesting... A kind of 'ancient' feel... 25. Review of ASA Pens ebonite Nauka Purchased from: asapens.in Purchase date: Ordered mid-November, 2017. Arrived January 25, 2018. Cost: $55 USD for Jowo nib unit option (eyedropper and Schmidt units are cheaper), free testing and free shipping by registered mail Clicking on the photos below will take you to full-sized images. The Nauka from ASA Pens is an ebonite pen made to order by L. Subramaniam in Chennai, India. It has an elegant, streamlined shape inspired by the vintage Oldwin Classic from Mora Stylos. The placement of the cap threads right next to the nib permits a clean, uninterrupted "sectionless" line that, combined with the unique warmth and stability of ebonite, feels very comfortable in the hand. The pen is longer than average but not excessively long, and the grip diameter should be good for hands of all sizes. Although the cap can be forced to post, the pen is not intended to be used this way and becomes ungainly. Unposted, it's balanced perfectly, even in my small hands. L to R: Faber-Castell Loom, ASA Pens Nauka, Noodler's Ahab, Wing Sung 698, Platinum Century 3776, Pilot Custom Heritage 912 Size comparison with Pilot Metropolitan Size when writing, compared with Pilot Metropolitan I selected a red and tan rippled ebonite which turned out to be more beautiful than I had expected. As is usual for ebonite in this price range, there are some minor flaws in the material which are noticeable only upon very close inspection and which do not detract from my enjoyment of the pen. Likewise, a few very faint traces of tooling marks serve as an inoffensive reminder of the pen's handmade origins. I chose to forgo a clip, a decision which I feel enhances the clean beauty of the Nauka's lines. I usually grip my pens very close to the nib, so I was concerned that the location of the threads would be uncomfortable. At first, they did feel awkward, but I quickly adjusted to them. The cap threads are prominent and on the sharp side, though not painfully so. I chose the Jowo 3-in-1 option with a fine nib and requested that the pen be tested before shipping. It arrived very well-tuned: smooth but with a pleasant amount of feedback and moderate ink flow. I increased ink flow slightly to suit my personal preference, and the pen now writes perfectly for me. The cap opens in two turns, which produces a good seal without making it a chore to uncap and re-cap the pen. Unlike other ebonite-cap pens in my experience, my Nauka starts up without fail, even if I leave it unused for as long as a week (I have not left it inked but unused for a longer period that that). Inside of the cap Receipt took much longer than originally estimated. However, I did request a color option not listed on the website at the time, which Subramaniam graciously accommodated, and I made it clear that I wasn't in a hurry for the pen. We kept in communication regularly, and had no anxiety about my order. I've been using my Nauka for a little over a month now, and it has been a pleasure to have in my collection. I find myself reaching for it often, and it's one of the pens I always have inked. Excellent, tight barrel threads for secure eyedroppering. View of barrel thickness. The converter option with the 3-in-1 system is great for when I don't want to commit to a large fill of one ink.
