Hi all. I won an auction on Sunday and today, a lovely dark red 51 dropped through my door. The seller described 'faint marks' so, being a cynic (especially where eBay is concerned), I was expecting something the texture of sandpaper. Credit where it's due though - I've seen supposedly 'mint' pens in worse condition. The fact that it only cost me £29 makes it even sweeter! So, here are some photos. There's no date code that I can find - just a faint 'M', which I think stands for medium nib. The pen in the last picture is my UK Duofold Junior, for size comparison purposes. Dear Fountain Pen Aficionados, Some of you might recall that my precious fountain pen collection, consisting of about 50 pens, was stolen from my office at UC Berkeley in early June. After continually searching, and others who helped, I have now located an eBay seller who is slowly selling off my collection. His eBay handle is Dort1463. He lists on global eBay markets including US, Canada, UK, Germany, and Spain. His international listings all have the peculiar caveat that he only mails to the US. Most of his auctions are private. His eBay store lists his name as "Daniel O." I do not make accusations lightly, but I'm quite sure these items are from my collection. Of the 16 pens this seller sold, all corresponded to items in my collection. Moreover, his sales included unusual items like a Sheaffer Intrigue Whaleshark with stub nib and a Sailor 1911 red with music nib. If any of you purchased items from this seller (at sumgai prices I might add), could you please be kind enough to contact me and perhaps give me the opportunity to buy back a part of my collection? In addition, if you encounter a listing by this seller, please notify me so I can bid or, better yet, catch this guy. Thanks to all for your continued support as I slowly recover from the trauma of losing my collection. Any suggestions for getting it back are greatly appreciated. I have already contacted the police, but have not contacted eBay. I am hesitant to contact eBay since all they will do is close the seller down thereby killing the ability of the authorities to trace him. Sincerely, John Morgan -
Why is ebay removing the geographic filters? Usually when I got o ebay it has a list of location preferences for an item down the left hand side and I can pick, local, Europe wide or world wide. But now this option has gone. I've tried looking elsewhere for it but can't seem to find it anywhere. It's quite annoying, because if I search for pens and I want to know what is in my local area or in Europe (where I won't get stung with import tax) it used to come up easily, but now it doesn't and I have a load of stuff from the US and China in the search and it doesn't tell me where anything is until I actually click on it. Hopefully I am missing the new filter tab that has been staring me in the face all this time - please, tell me this is so!

Last month I picked up this very interesting pen on eBay, thanks to a listing posted in the Market Watch forum by OcalaFLGuy. It seems to be a pen made by the Pagliero Pen Company in Italy. http://www.fountainpen.it/Pagliero/en This is one of the pens labeled "Condor." There are no other markings on the pen other than the initials "MS" at the top of the clip. That might mean something else -another pen company? -but the seller thought it was possibly a Pagliero. It certainly has what to me is an Italian design sense, like a Ducati motorcycle. As you can see it is a piston-type filler. The nib is interesting to me, as the underside seems to look sort of folder-over on itself. I'd welcome other observations and opinions. It writes quite nicely, a wet smooth line between M and B, I think. In size it is just in between the Sheaffer Imperial and PFM pens, but the barrel/nib section is longer than both of them. The last photo includes the Imperial for comparison. The ink is J. Herbin. Perle Noire. So there it is - if you see one out there, it's a pretty nice pen, take a chance! I paid about $65 US for it including shipping from the UK.

I understand why someone may want to buy an empty pen box as her/his box may have been damaged or (s)he may have bought a pen/pencil without a box and I understand why someone may buy a broken vintage pen/pencil for spare parts, but, this is ridiculous: someone is selling a ripped/torn LL Bean paper bag into which one's purchase was put when shopping at an LL Bean Store. http://www.ebay.com/itm/LL-Bean-Outdoor-Specialties-Store-Shopping-Retail-Green-Gift-Bag-Medium-Tote-/321449791812?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ad7e69144 This auction with starting price of $0.25 and Buy It Now price of $0.99 for a ripped/torn paper bag is a wasteful, ridiculous eBay listing. What is even more ridiculous is that the seller is charging $4.75 for shipping this ripped/torn paper bag! Oh, (s)he will ship this ripped/torn paper bag worldwide! What can this seller hope to gain???? Why sell a silly paper bag and then have to pay eBay fees and PayPal fees? It just makes no sense to me!

I just bought a fountain pen on eBay but neither I nor the seller know what brand it belongs to. All I know is that it is a rather old piston filler with a 14K Gold plated nib (inprinted on the nib as well). Wow - I've just been blocked from Ebay. I've had an account since 1999, which I've used fairly often over the years. The vast majority of my activity has been purchasing, and over the past few years mostly of fountain pens. I've sold perhaps five items in all that time. Last month, I received an e-mail saying that my account had been blocked from sales due to some unspecified activity. After contacting Ebay's customer service, they said that an account had been linked with mine. They requested faxed documentation to prove that I am actually myself. I provided the documents, and heard nothing further. I just called their customer service again today, and have been told that my account has been suspended. They will give me no reasons, and have told me that there is no one else to contact. The representative went so far as to say that if I open another account they will simply suspend it again. This is amazingly disturbing to me. I did my best to not take out frustrations on the customer service rep, but I'm beyond furious. I have done nothing wrong, yet through someone else's action I'm now barred from Ebay. Sorry for the rant, FPN community. I'm just very upset.

i just won an auction, and there was a mysterious thirty pound jump in the bidding just before the end. Even when checking the bid history for automatic bids that gap was still there after a whole series of incremental increases. No reserve was advertised on the item. And there is another auction going on right now from this same (top-rated plus) seller in which exactly the same thing happened, and it was that same amount, thirty pounds. Incremental bidding has continued after the jump. No reserve warning on this one either. What gives? if there is a reserve, shouldn't that always be apparent? is there a way for people to bid invisibly?

One seller has a black NN with an F nib (not italic F--yay!) listed on eBay, but doesn't know to call it a NoNonsense, so searching for that won't bring it up. I know there are folks hunting for Fine NNs out there, so thought I'd give you all the heads-up. Earlier this year, there was a seller on eBay who had a listing for a Caran D'Ache fountain pen. However, the listing was truly for a Colibri fountain pen with a steel nib which was put into a Caran D'Ache box. I contacted the seller about the pen to inform him of the problem and he replied with a kind thank you for the information. Yet, he continued the listing. Fortunately, no one purchased the pen. Then, a few weeks later, the same listing was posted again. I contacted the seller again and, this time, he tried to claim that Caran D'Ache made the pen. So, I found the pen on the Colibri site and sent him the information about his pen as well as introduced the seller to the difference between a Caran D'Ache pen and a Colibri pen. Again, he kindly thanked me and continued the listing. Fortunately, once again, no one purchased the pen. The seller, yet AGAIN, listed the pen in the same manner a few weeks later. Since the original listing had irked me so much, I had been watching for the second and, then, third listing of this pen. We had yet another round of "this is not a Caran D'Ache pen" with the same thank you and continued listing of the pen. Sooooooooo, since the seller had reposted and continued this fraudulent listing, now, three times, I reported the listing as, this third time, there were folks, other than me, watching the listing. The listing was removed. Unfortunately, with final exams and grading demanding my attention, I was not able to check eBay to determine if the pen was listed to trap unsuspecting buyers of holiday gifts. My habit has always been to contact sellers whose listings contain errors/problems. This has always been an enjoyable experience which has resulted in several eBay friends. However, last fall when the above described pen was posted on eBay, providing correction and appropriate information did not seem to work, prompting me to report the listing to the powers-that-be of eBay. How do you deal with incorrect/problematic auction listings?

Against common sense, my better nature (and pocketbook), I'm considering bidding on the MB Voltaire FP in this eBay auction. With that said, I know the maxim "If it looks too good to be true, it usually is" applies particularly well to eBay auctions. As I'm more familiar with vintage MBs, can anyone who knows the WEs tell me whether this pen looks authentic and/or how I might decide whether it's just a scam? Thanks in advance for any help/advice/commentary/constructive criticism/slaps-to-the-side-of-the-head!

Inspired by Bruce's Sunday ebay picks I figured it wouldn't hurt to post ebay search tips. It seems that the more experience I become the more I see relatively cheap ebay purchases sold on other sites for much much more with little to no work done on them. I'll list my basic search "secrets". Will you list yours? They are as follows: Be broad and general in your searches. If you want a Sheaffer Targa 1001 don't just search for "sheaffer targa 1001 fountain pen", you will only find a very small search result. Search for "sheaffer fountain pen" or even "fountain pen". I usually just search for "fountain pen" with time ending soonest. Don't forget, not everyone knows it's a targa 1001. Learn to spell bad. Search for "sheaffer" and "sheafer" and "shafer" etc... Don't just look for auctions ending during the weekend. Far far more auctions end during the middle of the week. Learn to love the search. Search everyday, it only takes a few minutes. These are mine. Anyone have anything that they have learned? Please add. I would rather you or I get that hidden pen than the retailers that will re-sell it here for much much morel

I know there's the nice thread in the Shaeffer forum about Fleabay hit and misses, but this isn't about any Shaeffer. First, it's fountain pens? Didn't those things go the way of the dodo? Second, it's fountain pens, these are really cool. And you find all sorts of nice modern pens. Third, there are vintage pens, quality ones often cheaper than an off the shelf modern pen? Fourth, you can find vintage pens off ebay for cheap?!? The downward spiral has begun and reached it's final descent. Of course, mistakes will be made, and purchases regretted. The information was all there, but if you don't have the knowledge you won't be able to spot the ones where maybe you should have listened to the words at the back of your head "stay away from that one". Or "what what you pay for it". Some of it is not the sellers fault as they are ignorant about fountain pens. They maybe know they'll need "to be cleaned" or "need a new sac", but they don't know anything beyond that. Except evilbay prices for similar items. Example #1. I openly admit my lack of knowledge. what looks ilke a nice green Parker Vacumatic, Q1 1940, speed line filler, split arrow clip, double jewel. All to me in accordance with the info at the reputable sites discussing Parker history. I consider this part of my learning lesson. I could complain to the seller and probably be able to send it back and get my money back. But the pen is really in pretty good condition. The barrel transparency is decent if lightly ambered, so it's much better than any of the other vacs I've acquired. Nice jewels, etc. And through the kindness of FPN members I know the nib can be replaced or repaired. So I'm going to keep it and get it fixed up. But I've learned a lesson. Maybe other have learned a lesson they want to post. cheryl

Earlier today I inadvertently bought about $225 worth of pens and inks ranging from Hero to Sailor 5th anniversary. Stuck my phone in my pocket and it "pocket dialed" my entire order in my eBay cart. Can you say oh......yes I know you could. Luckily my husband is bailing me out of this one and is asking me why I had $45 bottles of ink in my cart The good news is I'll have some new inks to play with

So I've been around this site for a year now, and heard multiple times how wonderful Esterbrooks are, but haven't used one. The other day I happened across an Ebay auction, minimum bid of 10 bucks, and no bids. I figured I would low ball it, lose it, and move on. Except I won. I'm just a little worried I missed something. I didn't check the pics very carefully before bidding (my max was $13, expected to be outbid), but on closer examination this evening, I can't see any issues. No cracks, chips, or dings, and the jewels are in good shape. The nib is just a 2668, but seems to be in good shape. Is there some other reason that no one else bid on this pen, or did I just get it for what seems to me like a decent price, $17 shipped? JS

Do you prefer to buy your pens from pen shops/online professional sellers, thus paying a higher set price but getting a beautiful ready-to-write pen, or from other sources such as ebay or antique shops etc. where you might find an unrestored bargain? I realize that how one answers this would also depend on whether or not one regularly does one's own pen repairs. Or combinations of all of the above?

So, I was browsing the 'bay last night, as sometimes happens while winding down for the evening. The pen in the following pictures, identified as a vintage Parker, popped up. While the photo quality is poor, it looks like a "51" demi to me. Would anyone else like to hazard a guess before it arrives?

Hello, I'm new to the forum and was wondering if someone could help me verify if my montblanc pen is real. The plastic glows red under light. It has a pin on the cap "GV1084802" has GERMANY on cap, under the clip it says PIX. Their was a rubber seal on the cap(rollerball pen) what concerns me is the box, the pen I bought was a rollerball 75th anniversary, used. The guy I bought it from got it from a pawn shop(he owns it) the box had a black stretchy strip to keep the pen in the case without moving. It came with a montblanc gaurentee, but it wasn't stamped, as well as the warrantee wasn't stamped. Are their any indicators that I received a fake. Thank you so much, in advance.

I use Waterman Phileas fountain pens to create drawings for my website www.TwelveDrawings.com Through my several years of buying, I have watched these wonderful pens creep up and up in price. I hear that back in France, they were strictly a school student's pen. In America, they once sold at Staples for about $20. When I bought my first one at Staples (2011) it was up to $50. I bought two more as gifts. One day, I dropped my pen (nib down onto concrete) and went back to Staples for another. The clerk said the pens were no longer made and suggested I check eBay. At that time (maybe 2012), new Phileas fountain pens were going for $70-90 on eBay. Online retail stores were listing the discontinued pens at $99+. Today, a quick check of eBay shows several black Phileas pens with an "Buy It Now" price of almost $200. The highest priced ones are black pens owned by speculators willing to wait for the market to come to them. Less costly items are typically used, out-of-box, an unusual color, or a Kultur. I have the pens I need and won't be buying any more unless I see a great buy on a new-in-the-box Phileas. If you know such a source, please share. Do you think this $20 pen is really worth paying triple digit prices? And why? Because it's THAT good? Because they are not made any more? Because you might resell it for a profit in the future? I'm okay with all three reasons.... maybe you have another one. — twelvedrawings.com
