  1. By now I'm sure everyone here thinks I'm off my rocker, but I've yet another obscure, weird product question regarding dip pen nibs. Ready? Anyone ever heard of a Laundry nib? It says LAUNDRY NIB right on it! Hardest dang thing to write with in the world. Hard as nails and ink will NOT stay on the nib. It was on one of the holders I purchased. The shape is much like a bank nib (which says BANK NIB on it), and quite round, quite large, but...it's just odd! (Not at home, so no pic at the moment.) Wonder if Laundry is a name and it's just a horrible generic nib, lol. There are the usual suspects, the Gillotts, Hunts, Esterbrooks, blah, blah, blah, but what is the most unusual or off the wall nib you have come across and what is it like? The most recent purchase garnered me a Miller Bros. Bank Nib with a pretty key breather hole. It was unusual for me, but I must say the flex is awesome! I also have a nib I'm guessing was made for a group as it is a "Clan" nib. So info on the nib would be good...your oddest, unique nib and why would be a fun addition. ...and GO!

    Coffee Ristretto, Just Because

Ok, so a poster elsewhere on FPN asked about coffee as ink, in particular, ristretto (short espresso). It was freshly shot through a semi-commercial machine with the right grind. I tried it in a dip pen but would never put it in a FP due to acidity, caramelisation, solidification, and oils. I was going to leave it there, however it ended up having a sheen/shine that was unexpected so thought it might be of interest to inky recipe makers. It didn't feather on Rhodia at all. It did bleed through but didn't seep on to the next page. It has a certain amount of permanence - wetting the page and rubbing across it with my finger caused an initial light smear but then the paper wore away before the 'ink' did. The ristretto was too fluid really. I put some in a vial and added a xanthan concentrate I use experimentally for viscosity adjustment but it caused a synergistic reaction I've never seen before that turned it into a thick gel. Unexpected. Perhaps acacia might work better to increase viscosity if anyone ever got that curious. edit: forgot to mention that the 'ink' is completely dry in these pics. That's sheeny/shiny dry ink. Here are the pics I posted elsewhere.
  3. I got some old ink....new, unopened, still in the blister pack....and am just checking to see if it's definitely ok for fountain pens. It's two smaller size bottles of Sheaffer Skrip, one lavender, one grey: it says "for the calligrapher" on the front, and at the bottom, developed for use in all fountain pens" so it should be ok, but I thought I'd ask just to make sure. Alex
  4. Dip Pen Users, If you write for a long time at one sitting, do you periodically clean the nib of your pen? Do you ever let your pen sit while you pause and then have to clean it before dipping again? I am just curious about your handling procedures.

    Dipless Esterbrook Desk Set

Im pretty new to fountain pens in general, and saw this, and wondered if anyone could give me a bit more detail....please pardon my ignorance in advance - I go by the notion that the only silly question is the one unasked, so, what exactly is a dipless desk pen? Are the pens filled, them kept in the desk set, rather like my Parker 51 in it's red glass Whitefriars ball? Or, are they actual inkwells, which one fills? Any words of wisdom much appreciated Thanks Alex
  6. So you don't even have to bother with the business of cleaning nibs, swapping cartridges and all that fountain pen nonsense.... http://sploid.gizmodo.com/robot-imitates-your-handwriting-using-a-fountain-pen-1679656771 So what do people think?
  7. I've seen some vintage Mabie Todd & Co dip pens on ebay, but I cant seem to find any writing samples pens of this sort. I'm looking for some recommendations for some "wet noodle" / super flex dip nibs, nibs/brands to watch out for. I'm guessing something gold, and something pretty old. I'd love to hear from anyone with a good solid background that can link to some examples of how much flex is possible and what to expect when getting into this. Thanks!
  8. Okay, I am going to once again call upon the wisdom of the Estieville community for guidance and information. In my research, I've not been able to find any information about my unopened NOS Esterbrook dip nibs, Assortment #11. As there are 144 points in the box, I'm not sure if I should keep the box sealed and intact or should I crack the thing open and use some of the nibs? I have dip pen nibs, so I'm not in need of them necessarily, but does anyone know where I could find a listing of what WAS Assortment #11 without opening up the box? Should it not be of much value, should I open it and use/sell some of the nibs? This is way out of my league. Thanks for the read.

    Experimenting With Sitb

GASP!! THE HORROR! But please don't be too afraid. Let me explain. I have a bottle of Private Reserve Avocado that I only just opened recently. The smell was immediately awful, like ammonia. So I dug around with a toothpick and found a bit of jelly goop at the bottom. (It was a little terrifying, but fascinating.) I know the immediate response is to dump it down the drain. BUT... I hate to waste ink, and I have a terrible knack for playing with things I shouldn't. So of course I filled up a Pilot Petit 3 with the ink anyway. I know some hearts just skipped a beat out there. But I've had this cheap-o pen (the reason I am experimenting with this one is because of that cheapness) filled and used for several weeks, and have had no problems. No funky stuff growing, no flow issues.. By all means, it works perfectly. I just get a whiff of ammonia now and then in a particularly wet area in my sketching. But I actually don't find the smell to be any more or less offensive than many markers I own. I also have a junker Welsharp mini pen I found at an antique mall that had no cap. I pulled the nib out and decided to use it as a dip nib, specifically with one pen body for this one specific ink, in order to keep cross-contamination at bay. I suppose the point of this topic is to ask whether anyone else out there has gotten use out of their contaminated inks? Do you feel comfortable doing so? Has it worked/not worked for you? WOULD you use it as a dipping ink only? Or am I just a cheapskate with a danger streak? I am by no means telling you to go ahead and use ink that has SitB, that it is safe, blah blah blah. Not in the least. And I surely would NOT use contaminated ink in any of my regular fountain pens. I'm just sharing my experience in living on the edge of inkdom, and that I've been able to use the ink in a limited way to avoid (literally) throwing my money down the drain.

    The Newbie.

Hey guys! Just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a 19 year old Pharamacology student (pre-med) and I actually just recently took an interest in fountain pens (about a week ago). I then went out and purchased a pack of Pilot Varsities from my local OfficeMax to see whether FP's are for me. I loved the way the FP's wrote, and now I can't even fathom how nice it would be to use a better FP for my daily writing. My professor even complimented my pen while we were taking a quiz last week. I'm currently awaiting my shipment of FP's and Ink to arrive. I ordered a Lamy Safari (F), a Pilot Metropolitan (M), The Lamy Z24 Converter, and some Waterman's Havana Brown ink. I've basically been getting my fix of FP's from Youtube video's this past week. LOL. I also went out and purchased a dip pen a few days back and a bottle of Higgin's black Ink. It's been a fun few days. I'd appreciate it if you guys could give me some advice on how I can make my FP experience as enjoyable as possible. I'd love to here from all of you FPN veterans. Also, I'm looking for suggestions as to what my next pen in my collection should be. I'm thinking of upgrading to a gold plated nib that write nicely. I'm also a college student so please keep suggested pens relatively cheap. Thank everyone! -Fahad
