  1. Hello fellow pen people Just wondered how many suitable basic dyes are out there to make ink with. It seems that there are so many inks out there, though i would think there are a set number of suitable "ink" dyes out there. That would mean that one could calculate how many possible combinations are possible, including combinations that might not be aesthetically pleasing. Are new dyes being created at all?
  2. I have it on good authority (from Diamine today) that they have just started to sell refill 30ml bottles from both Gift Sets (musicians and flowers) separately at GB£4.03 each. Unfortunately these aren't the glass bottles like those in the sets, they are the ordinary plastic Diamine 30ml bottles. So to those of you who have sets with a favourite ink in, I suggest you keep your glass bottles for refilling. If you're in the UK you currently need to phone and place your order. You can still pay through PayPal If you're in the US I suggest you send them an email and ask how to order.
  3. Finally, I got round to the soak tests of these wonderful new inks and the results were rather surprising, to say the least. For dye-based inks, there are one or two that really have great qualities. As you can see below. Before: After: I have to say that the paper I use for these soaks is pretty dire and shouldn't be considered indicative of any lasting permanence etc. But; a half-hour soak in cold water, as usual, followed by a vigorous tap rinse, isn't a bad indication of what could happen and as most of us are probably only prone to the odd spill now and again: well... Great inks and just look at Safari...!

    Help Identifying Sitb?

I have a bottle of Diamine Orange that has flecks of something in it. These flecks are about the size of very coarse pepper - the largest ones are about 1/32 of an inch. They do not dissolve when I shake the bottle, and they are heavy - they fall quickly (within a second) to the bottom of the bottle. Any idea what this is? I'm pretty sure I don't want it in my pens. Thanks, Jon

    Diamine Anniversary Collection

The "Diamine Anniversary Collection" inks arrived yesterday in the SFPG. Eight stunning colours in a new triangular bottle. All welcome ! Catherine
  6. Hi Fellow Pen Appreciators I have recently bought a bottle of Diamine Royal blue and when I opened it I notices spots or patches of oily something floating on top of the ink. It makes up a shiny reflective and very slightly rainbow-y layer. The ink itself is rather dark and the thing on the surface really reminds me of spilled oil on the seas. Is it a precursor or a warning of the feared SITB? Or is it normal I just never met it before? (I'm a newbie to bottled inks and pretty new to fountian pens as well...) Since then I've seen something a bit similar to that in my Diamine Asa blue, but I thought I'll take the careful option and ask before I put it into more precious pens and even more pronouncedly to sargasso Sea. Thank you very much for your opinion or advice
  7. Long story short: I'm looking for a reliable dark blue ink...I'm not a big fan of the blues, and I easily discarded Pelikan Blue-Black, Waterman Blue-Black, Waterman Florida Blue, Pelikan Royal Blue, Pelikan Edelstein Topaz, R&K Salix and Noodler's BBK... Still, I'm pretty stubborn, so I want to give blues yet another chance; that's why I want to try one of these two, but can't decide which one.. they both have similar hues, albeit Midnight is somewhat more saturated. So which do you think should win a spot in my ink repertoire, based mostly on behavior? (I like the color of both, at least on the computer screen...). Thank you!

    New Diamine Flower Set

Just a brief announcement and short review of the forthcoming ten new colours in Diamine's Flower set. This new collection will surely be a popular addition to the growing Diamine range and I think the colours certainly will be a hit. Obviously, the names of the inks are subjective: no-one can categorically say that the 'Marigold' for example isn't the same colour as that flower that person has just picked for the table vase. Also, it must be remembered that how I see the scanned examples, isn't necessarily how others may view them on their particular screens. Well, that's just the way of it. So, here they are. Ten inks; ten flowers; coming out in October, so I'm told. As is Salamander! I've tried to pair them up, from the purple/blue, to the red/orange. Carnation was tricky. Judge for yourselves in October. The colours are: Aster; Cornflower; Iris; Pansy; Bougainvillea; Carnation; Burgundy Rose; Gerbera; Tulip and Marigold. I've no idea how the inks will be packaged but as it will be a 'set' I suppose that they will be boxed much like the popular Music offering from last year. No other details I'm afraid - the inks, with the note arrived this morning. Let's just sit back and enjoy!

    Diamine Tyrian Purple

Disclosure: I received a 30ml bottle of this ink free from Cult Pens with no obligations. Thanks guys! You have to try this ink! Buy, beg, borrow, steal, ... a sample from somewhere. Even if you do not like the colour and do not care for the shading. There is something about how this ink feels that is tremendously satisfying. The wetness and lubrication is just so. This ink was released on 1 August 2014. The Wikipedia article on Tyrian Purple is interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrian_purple USAGE DAILY WRITER: Certainly. BUSINESS USE: Yes, with the usual caveats about any ink with red components. ILLUSTRATIONS: Oh yes! Can cover large areas. NOTES: Yes. LETTERS: Yes, please! Do send me letters with this ink. LOVE LETTERS: Absolutely! More romantic than passionate. PERFORMANCE FEATHERING: 4/4 - none at 10x magnification with the flex writing BLEEDTHROUGH: 3/4 - very minimal; only seen on the poorest papers SHADING: 3/4 - really beautiful shading that does not overwhelm SHEEN: 0/4 - none seen FLOW: medium - high with great lubrication WATERPROOF: 1/4 - faint lines remain, possibly enough to read the text DRYING TIME: 2/4 FADE RESISTANCE: (not tested) Review [The writing samples are from the instructions of St Cyril of Jerusalem to the catechumens, dated circa AD 350.] On Rhodia dot pad On Rhodia R On our corporate printer's stock cartridge paper
  10. I like Oxbood...but it is a bit brown especially in some pens in which it looks only brown. I have seen Red Dragon and it appears beautiful more more red than dark red. Oxblood is dried blood. Red Dragon looks like fresh blood. I am looking for the colour of clotting blood (and yes, I do know exactly what that looks like). Had anyone experimented with mixing these 2 colours, and if so, what ratio worked best? (I do not want to buy a totally different ink so not looking for a Noodler's suggestion for example)
  11. A few months ago I don't know what got to me and I purchased a 30ml bottle of Diamine Grey (possibly after reading some comparison of grey inks and found this one to be the true grey for me). I wrote one or two convertors of it and I wasn't very interested. It's just not exciting and I don't see me using it again. So I am thinking about mixing it with another ink to see if that'll make any fun colours. What colours (or inks) can you suggest that I mix with this grey? I have no idea at all how the colour will change when mixed with a grey ink.

    Wild Strawberry - Diamine

Wild Strawberry is strongly saturated bright red that can cast terror in the hearts and minds of students whose work was graded with it. 13. Recently started using a bottle of Private reserve ebony blue, that I've had for around six years or so. I'm really enjoying it actually, and really love the sheen it has. Works really well on the natural ivory colour of Tomoe river white paper which I normally use. I'm looking into buying more PR inks soon, and just wondered which others have that very saturated appearance, and also produce a sheen. Many thanks Sach

    What Exactly Is 'ph'?

Hey all, just a few questions: What exactly is 'pH'? To my knowledge it is how acidic an ink is or something? What does it mean if an ink is 'pH neutral'? How does the 'pH' level affect my FP? What is the difference between Iron-Gall and Dye-Based inks' 'pH' levels? And lastly; Can IG inks be mixed with standard (dye-based) inks, just something like Diamine or Waterman? I've seen R&K inks can, but I've also seen many posts about Diamine's Registrar's turning cloggy, even if mixed with less than a drop of other ink. Sorry for the "few" questions, but I am still quite a novice. Thanks, Tom.

Ink Review - Diamine Blue Black

Here is a quick writing test on notebook paper from a Mead five start notebook. The feathering that I mentioned Is extremely hard to see and is in no way a hindrance to its use. The ink has a very nice color with some shading, the scan does not show the full range of color. The ink lubricates the nib well, it can be a little scratchy on 20 lb copy paper but it is smooth on about everything else I have tried. It has a nice even flow and rarely has any starting problems. Diamine Blue Black is a Wonderful ink and a perfect choice for students, and everyone else! Ps. I know I misspelled Written.
  17. Here's my current squad. There are a few more pens not inked and a few more inks not used, but these are combinations I've found to work perfectly. http://i.imgur.com/8WuvXQr.jpg Any questions about either pens or inks welcomed - it's half 5 in the morning here and I've been up over two hours already...

    Review: Diamine China Blue

Diamine China Blue: a really nice, light but characterful blue. I'm not a big user of blue, and this one won't make for a day to day ink owing to the light colour and poor contrast. Should be good for cards, though. It needs a wet pen, or even better a flex pen like my Noodler's Ahab. It looks slightly violet in the scan but on the page there's no hint of violet. The ink is notable for changing colour over 24 hours as it dries (bottom swab is just applied, top has had a day to sit, middle has had about 9 hours). Appears to even have a smidge of water resistance... http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rjp1zlfNyV4/UrXIxhHbayI/AAAAAAAABQ0/HXSfPoW561o/s1600/chinablue.jpg Also on my blog.

    Diamine 150 Years Old

As they proudly state on all their labels, Diamine have been making inks since 1864, making this year their 150th anniversary. I cannot believe their marketing department would allow such a landmark to pass unsung and yet I have heard nothing! I don't even think there has been another post here remarking the anniversary. So, what are we to expect? They have probably been keeping their powder dry to launch something for the major giving season so, will it be a third boxed set of inks, or something more imaginative? Now I've had the thought, I can hardly wait. And a big round of applause for a company doing what it does and diversifying into other inky areas to keep going whilst feeding our passion. Yes, I know Herbin have been around so long they probably supplied the inks for the caves at Lascaux, but a century and a half is not bad.

    Diamine Majestic Purple Ink Review

Here is a brief handwritten review of Diamine Majestic Purple Ink. It is difficult to display the true color of this ink. It has a vibrancy to it but it is definitely not searing bright. It is a medium purple with pink undertones. (When diluted it is a pretty pink color.) I think it is a very nice medium purple and very easy to read. As noted in my review, this ink appears much darker in a wetter pen (like the Ahab) as well with broader nibs (I have tried a stub 1.1 and 1.5) http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/1d/06/3b/1d063b5d998b929012ff08e3d774563a.jpg More detailed photos are here: http://tessymoon.wix.com/tessymoon#!fountain-pen-love/cp8t

    A Few New Inks...

I've received a few new inks this month and have been pleasantly surprised by most of them. The first picture is a photograph, taken using my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and the second is a scan - I know which one I'll stick to in future! I had a torrid time with my Platinum Plaisir - I ordered a green one with a 0.5 nib. I loved the packaging and the presentation for a £10 pen, but unfortunately it behaved as such - scratchy and dry and horrible. A search of here and other places suggested this was an exception, so I bought myself 3 Preppys - a 0.5 green that would sit in my Plaisir's body if it turned out to be nice, a 0.5 blue-black and a 0.3 yellow. I couldn't be more impressed with all three of them - I know the build quality isn't exactly robust, but they are semi-disposable I suppose. I've bought international standard adapters so that, when their proprietary cartridges run out, I can use any ink I want (within reason). The offending Plaisir nib and feed got chucked away, and the section received a highlighter tip and went in the unused Preppy barrel. It's still a weird colour so I think there's something up with the cartridge too, but it'll get used until it runs out, then I'll use the glorious Preppy highlighter cartridges - they're really bright and I love a cheap refillable highlighter. Anyway, that's probably TL;DR for most of you - here are the pictures: Photo: http://i.imgur.com/nmzxoCn.jpg Scan: http://i.imgur.com/wD939jX.jpg
  22. Having just spotted the lovely-looking Diamine Peach and Coral on Amber's thread, I was wondering if anyone could let me know how they compare to Pelikan's Edelstein Mandarin please? I have the latter, but a pinky-orange might be nice to own too, if it's different enough Thank you!

    Diamine Brilliant Red Minireview

I'm not too happy about the quality of the first pic because by the time i (re)took it a BIG black cloud had hovered our house and made everything dark. (edit: I'll see if I can retake it when the sun comes out again). The close up pic is much more accurate to how it looks. Where it says "poppy red" is actually written in Diamine poppy red for a comparison. They look pretty similar but poppy red is more saturated. http://imgur.com/HrtZABG.jpg http://imgur.com/vK9K20S.jpg http://imgur.com/Bzr7TYS.jpg Bleedthrough? Yup http://imgur.com/7CCDQIk.jpg

(The last one is De Atramentis Jane Austen, which is a sedated, dark, calm green. It has a definite grayish tint when compared to the Daimine greens here.) http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/2d/eb/5d/2deb5d0622f5bc0098b74c53890f87f9.jpg For more pictures please visit here: http://tessymoon.wix.com/tessymoon#!fountain-pen-love/cp8t
