  1. De Atramentis is german manufacturer of calligraphy and writing ink. The inks are hand made (the entire production process is done manually in their manufacturing center) by i's founder - Dr. Franz-Josef Jensen. I believe he uses high quality dyes from well established European companies like BASF and Bayer. De Atramentis offers a variety of "traditional" fountain pen inks and a broad selection of special and scented inks. I believe they should get more attention as the quality od these fluids is very good and some colors are simply stunning. Schwarzgrun is rather nice, dark shade of green. I like it. Much more than J. Herbin's Vert Empire. 3. De Atramentis & Christopher Clark Wilhelm II my favourite in maker and my favourite history teacher in one review It is a bit of a weird combination I know. But I am a Fountain Pen Fanatic an Inkholic and a bookworm so this brings the reason for this one step closer The second reason is this..... http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/WILHELM%20II_zpsjsxc8jrk.jpg De Atramentis, one of my favourite ink makers made an ink and Christopher Clark one of my favourite history teachers "made" a book with the same name.... "One of my" of course since I love more ink brands and have other favourite history teachers too like Dutch Journalist and writer Geert Mak and his epic history of Europe in the 20th century Well that is explained let's go http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/WH%202%201st%20ppage%20fpn_zpsdvod9ahq.jpg Ink and Book Both the ink and Wilhelm 2 have an array of layers and shades that I will explain here. I will of course review the ink in a normal fashion. The book review can be found in the hand written texts. For those not intested in the book I will insert the most important part of the ink review here first. More explanation on Professor Clark I will do at the end of the review. http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/Scan_Pic0012%20fpn_zps8m5oynav.jpg Blowing my nose with ink in a kitchen towel... Here more of the (wine/eggplant) red hues shows http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/Scan_Pic0013%20fpn_zpsrcbz45nw.jpg The colour depends on the colour and the quality of the paper .... On most papers it is more brown but a bit red hue is always visible It is a bit like Waterman's Havanna Brown... Which is also a brown wiht a red hue http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/colour%20comp%20fpn_zpstvtwfzyb.jpg Do you see what I mean Btw do not get intimidated by the featherig I used a Glass pen and these can be as wet a s fish's habitat Ink behaviour The ink behaves very well. It dries very fast even on Rhodia paper it dries in less than 10 seconds... On lower quality paper it dries even faster.... This is more often the case with De Atramentis inks, wet to very wet inks but very quickly drying once on the paper Shading is minimal till medium dependent on what paper is used. Saturation therefore is high. This fortunately does not result inbleeding or showthrough.... Feathering is very minimal when very wet and broad nibs are used but under normal circumstances on average paper this can be ignored Waterproof test. http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/20150506_134211_resized_zpsq8dyvoln.jpg This is the result of a my usual Jacques Cousteau Diving experience for inks This is after half an hour. The colour is gone but the text is still readible making this ink suitable for work.... Especially as it survives a normal drop of water. Just like you you survive a drop but not half an hour with your head dipped in your fully filled bath tob http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/Scan_Pic0007%20fpn_zpsyykperfj.jpg http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/Scan_Pic0006%20FPN_zpsyud27zml.jpg I tested on several papers in this review. From low quality" recycled toilet paper" (good for nature re-using! Use toilet paper turn and use again ha ) till medium and high quality paper. The upper paper is Rhodia R the lower normal copy paper I love this colur depending on light fall and paper more brown tones can be discovered just like with the Waterman Havanna Brown Availability Here is a link to the corresponding page on the De Atramentis website http://www.de-atramentis.com/topic-ink-topics-inks-in-inks-/people-inks--inks--ink--people-/ink-inks-politics-fountain-pens--28/ La Couronne du Comte http://www.lacouronneducomte.nl is always keen on satisfying their customers. If interested in the ink you can sen an e-mail to Rik or Dennis athttp://info@lacouronneducomte.nl Wilhelm II Book and writing samples. Keep looking when not reading the handwritten texts give a good impression on a few aspects of the ink.... and er the hand written text give a "good?" impression of both book and it's main character too http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/3%20European%20Emperors_zpslnrtddu7.jpg Name game Dr Franz Josef Jansen is not of nobility as far as i know but I just liked playing with language and names. Tinte is German for ink and Kaiser is German for emperor.... Funnily the last to "emperors share the same first names. Also funny are the last names... Von Habsburg directs to the castle in Switzerland where the Habsburg Dynasty originated from.... Hachenburg is the name of the lovely german city where Dr Jansen lives and works http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/Scan_Pic0008%20fpn_zpsf1wkmnf8.jpg Well inbreed was bon-ton (good habit ) among European nobility and they did it like . Vicky of merry old England had family in most European monarchies... Not the Dutch but there for the dutch weere linke to Germany (van Oranje NASSAU) and our kings were all named Willem (no H here) Willm I Willem II and Willem III and our current King Willem Alexander http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/Scan_Pic0009%20fpn_zpsj3gvr5n1.jpg Felix Austria, Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube – 'Let others wage war: thou, happy Austria, marry'. Forget the Beatles make love not war. The marriage politics were Habsburgs way of enlarging their territories or to keep in power.... Brilliant Idea make love not war but take my advice.... NOT wihtin your family A lot of Habsburg had genetical dissorders like Hot lips or retardation... Also queen Lizzy and family practised this as can be seen above and they suffer from haemophilia Well let's go on with the review and forget about this..... Not make war.... just make love..... ....with strangers http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/Scan_Pic0011%20fpn_zpszm55h97e.jpg Too Conclude Lovely ink. Though it does not shade much. It is highly saturated. And it behaves very well on several papers.I love the colour which is distinctive but descent enough for every day use Regards Peter Professor Christopher Clark http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/De%20Atramentis%20Wilhelm%202/Clark%20Collage_zpsskrdyict.jpg Professor Clark is your typical English professor.... Sort of.... since he is an Australian....who studied in Berlin and is now a a highly respected professor of History at Cambridge University (UK) and specializes on history of Prussia and the 19th and 20th century.( If am correct) Professor Clark speaks several languages fluently. He is also fluent in German.... even speaks it without an accent. .... That's a nice achieveement becaue i have been living in Austria for allmost 8 years now and still have a typical Dutch cheesehead (Kaßlkopf) accent On german television he presents the tv Series Deutschland Saga.... See the upper photos- Well from the clothing.... he looks like an English Professor doesn't he? He even has typical English wittiness in both German and English (can't judge the others) With this typical Humour he moderates the Deutschland Saga series where he explains the History of Germany from the Stone Age till now.... Professor Clark has the talent to explain more difficult subjects in eloquently fashion this makes it easy to follow for "normal" people like me.... Together with his wit these series and his presentations are a joy to watch. The Books Professor Clark published several books now of which some of them are depicted above. I just finished Wilhelm 2 and Started Sleepwalkers. In here as usual Professor Clark has a critical look at history and historians to place - "long accepted or taken-for-granted" facts - in a different light. His wit and his way of writng makes this books very usuable for Historians (like himself) as well as perfectly readible and understandible for simple nurse like me Regards Peter
  4. Here's the first review I wrote after my wife and I moved into our house. It's a nice, soft blue, but too expensive for the performance, methinks. Still a very nice ink though. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/YykEos.jpg
  5. Wanted to upload my review of the De Atramentis Blackberry. I wanted to get a review posted because the ones that I have found online did not manage to capture the color of the ink quite right. The review did scan "color correct" and in looking at this on a color calibrated monitor (I do a bit of photo work, and calibration is critical) I can say that the color here is true to what is on the paper. Feel free to ask any questions. This is my first posted review, so hints/tips/suggestions/criticism would all be welcome. DeAtramentis Blackberry on Flickr EDIT : The scan being clipped at the bottom is my fault. Between not having enough coffee, and being up a late at a dinner last night, my alignment was "just a bit outside."
  6. Hi everyone I’ve really started to enjoy brown inks over the last couple of months after ordering samples and a few bottles mainly from the great comparisons and reviews that are being posted! I am very curious about two De Atramentis brown inks that I haven't been able to find any information on: York Brown and Van Dyck Brown. I was hoping to be able to order samples of them but the Goulets, Andersonpens and isellpens don’t carry either shade. Has anyone tried them yet? If so how do you like them and do you have any writing samples that you could share? Also since DeA sometimes rebottles standard inks as scented or character inks, does anyone know if these have a double that can be ordered in sample form? Thank you for your help! http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f99/emrys1221/1067_14_zpsobxgujd9.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f99/emrys1221/1068_14_zps64n0f5m7.jpg
  7. I have questions about a set of inks recently ordered directly from the De Atramentis Inks website; I've tried contacting them at info@de-atramentis.com from both the 'contact' form on their site, as well as by responding to an email from Dr. Jansen via my gmail account, but after three weeks I've received no replies. Has anybody else tried to contact them directly? Is there a separate address for Customer Service? Thanks in advance!

De Atramentis Document Inks Brown And Green

Lovely Liquids De Atramentis Dokument inks BROWN and Green Dear FPN friends, Here is a Review of the new De Atramentis Document ink colours. In This Review I will examine the new Brown and the new Green. Both are absolutely bombproof like the De Atramentis Document Ink Blue and Dark blue I have reviewed before https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/263866-de-atramentis-document-ink/ https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/266158-de-atramentis-document-ink-dark-blue/ All new Colours of De Atramentis Document Ink The new range of colours will be: Blue, Dark Blue (blue black), Grey, Black, Red, Green, Brown (or sepia), Turquoise and Magenta The best thing is all colours can be adapted on input if artists and writers. More on this under “Liz Steel and Urban Sketchers” Liz Steel and Urban Sketchers Liz Steel is an Australian who paints with Fountain Pen inks. Liz has her own blog www.lizsteel.com on which she helps other artists. She is also a prominent member of Urban Sketchers www.urbansketchers.com , a worldwide online platform of painters. Down here in Blue is an article of Liz takn from her blog (her text in blue) Exciting Alternative to Noodlers Bulletproof Ink Today I had a crazy day in the Manly area- 3 coffees and not a sketch of any of them!?! Perhaps some of you think it is crazy to want to sketch everytime I go into a coffee shop. I started the day having a quick coffee with an exciting local artist Fiona Verity that I meet last year at my Sketching Architecture workshop. I hope this will be the first of many catch ups. SHe does wonderful work of birds and landscapes and beach scenes. Check out her site here http://fionaverity.com.au/ I then went to store of Larry Post who have lots and lots of amazing stuff… very tempting to walk in their doors… so we went to a coffee shop down the road before I had time to look at their stock too much. Check out their very cool website here http://www.larrypost.com.au/ Anyway, my friend, local USker Chantal Vincent has been talking for months and months about the De Artamentis Ink that she uses in her lamy - it was recommended to her by Larry Post. Today I got some of it and am testing it. I know a LOT of people have issues with Noodlers Bulletproof. Personally, I never have a problem! I think the most important thing is to keep the ink flowing… and well, as anyone that visits my blog knows…my pen gets daily use!!! The ink in my pen is always flowing! Maybe once a year I do a sketch that the ink runs when I apply a watercolour… so it has served me well for many years. The owners of Larry Post told me that Lamy do not recommend Noodlers but DO recommend the De Artamentis Ink. They didn't have any of the document ink in stock but I got a bottle of the Archive Ink to try- and Chantal has lent me some of her document ink to try. I was told there is little difference between the two. I also got a bottle of the lamy ink to try - someone told me that they found it good to use. First test of the the De Artamentis Ink was VERY PROMISING!… a very wet yellow wash was a good test. But I am going to use for the next week or so and then do a full report. Very loose work today - using my amazing new Da Vinci brushes I got in Penang but having some other things on my mind so not concentrating much … there are much more important things in life than ink and brushes. Prov 27.1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Liz travels all over the world and has a good understanding for the needs of artists worldwide. According to Liz Permanent inks in various colours are the Holy Grail for ink artists. She is also a great fan of De Atramentis as you can see above and on her blog. Therefore all colours can be adapted on input of USK members. I Will come back to this later. Well to the Ink testing….finally General Behaviour. The ink is well flowing in a 1,5 Italic it is extremely wet. Funnily however it is extremely quickly drying. The green ink does not shade at all (neither do DA document ink Blue and Dark Blue) The brown ink does shade, although not extremely Permanency It is a Permanent Ink and ultra-proof against Bomb Raids. For more information on permanency I have inserted a link in this article. In order to be permanent the ink has to dig in to the fibres of the paper. This induces Bleedtrough. In normal nibs the bleedthrough is very acceptable even on the cheap paper I use for testing. The advantage of this is that the ink cannot be removed without leaving traces…… Well just read on down below The Blue sheen is from the colour of the toilet cleaner the green from the sink cleaner Because I am a lazy (bleep) I copied some of the text from my previous review DA Document ink Blue down here in blue italic This ink is mentioned for doctors, lawyers etc. and for all who need a permanent ink for official Documents To be qualified as a document ink the ink has to meet certain standards. The standard in Europe is ISO 12757-2. This means that the ink has to be lightfast and may not be influenced by any outer influences. To show you the resilience of the inks I have poured several aggressive Fluids over it and… Nothing happened. It is like if the ink was carved in stone…. Amazing… It is not only bulletproof but also bombproof … I believe the ink even survives a nuclear accident or bomb attack (sorry for not testing that ) The ink is extremely lightfast. This is tested and certified with the Woll-Skala, wool scale in English. This may sound peculiar, but isn’t that strange on second glance. In history quite often the same pigments used for Dyeing wool where used for inks as well. The Woll-Skala reaches from 1 not lightfast over 5 extremely lightfast to 8 extreme lightfast. The ink “of course” is WS 8. There are other resilient inks like inks based on iron gall or soot. The problem is that iron gall inks are very aggressive to both paper and nib. (the paper of old Dutch documents from the golden age are often eaten away partially by the ink) Both iron gall and soot inks may also clog the feed of your fountain pen. The De Atramentis inks are, as far as I understand, made with nano-particles. According to the noble Fountain Pen King Sire Richard of Binderheart. Nano-particle inks can be safely used in Fountain pens. I always have one Fountain Pen filled with the ink for work and flush it once every 2 months… No problem at all For more information on permanence and safety click the link down below https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/266035-on-permanent-ink-permanency-and-safety/ Feathering Not noticeable The Green The Brown Sort of milk chocolate brown Down here are some of the technical specs (as suggested by Ann Finley 2007) (not copied in but for this ink) points 1-5 1 = 5= Fountain Pens: Online best writer 0.8 italic nib: Online Best Wrtiter 1,4 Italic Paper: Leonardo Ringbuch, average quality school note book made in Austria Drying time: Ultrafast points 5 Flow: Like a dam break points: 5 Lubrication: smooth in both pens points: 5 Bleeding: stronger in broader nibs points 0.8=4 / 1,5=3 Feathering: none points 5 Shading: green none points: 0 Brown some points 3 Waterproof: no need to mention here points:5 Package: Only in bottles,Wide opening for easy filling up points: 3-4 (bottle is quite nice but the not very special, Availabilty: In Europe Good, D-A webshop www.tinten-online.de, Amazon, La Couronne Du Comte (NL), USA Amazon, DA Webshop www.de-atramentis.com maybe Brian Goulet www.gouletpens.com points: EU 4 USA???.... I have written an article on Permanent ink in Fountain Pens down here is the link https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/266035-on-permanent-ink-permanency-and-safety/ . Please take notice and you will have years of fun from both your Fountain Pens and your inks Colour Adaption. On request of Liz Steel and others, the new colours have been developed and new colours will be developed. Liz Steel and Artists/users can give comments and suggestions on the inks. The ink can then be adapted. For example the green darker/lighter or the Brown more reddisch etc etc. Thinning Solution for Document inks. De Atramentis produces a special Thinning agent for their document inks. With this solution YOU can make your own shade of the colour. For example from Black, over Dark Grey to Light Grey… I believe that is awesome…. DA is giving it’s best to satisfy their clients. Exciting Stuff and more on Liz Steel Dr Jansen the owner of De Atramentis is a very creative and passionate ink manufacturer. He has some nice ideas · Ink Art Contest. In this ink art contest artists can send some of their Ink Art Works and can win nice prices… For Example Ink and a Diplomat Excellence A Marakesh Fountain Pen · Ink Art Gallery. On this Online gallery Ink artists can publish their works free of charge. They can even sell their work here Liz Steel was very excited about this and offered her help as a prominent USK member…. All these things are in development right now. I will pot a topic on these when it gets official. Availability All the the above mentioned colour are available over De Atramentis on the following website. www.tinten-online.de I have come in contact with the passionate owner of La Couronne du Comte, mr Dennis van de Graaf. He was enthusiastic and offered some help here. On Document and Wine inks. And…. Special Offers… I will let you know when these things will be ready at La Couronne du Comte. In Australia Larrypost.au sells De Atramentis inks. Liz Steel is a great fan of this shop. Do not let the prices disturb you. Prices are in Australian dollars. They are fair and equal As far as I understood, Goulet Pen has ordered some Document inks. For my FPN-friends in the USA this might be a way to save on shipping costs. Conclusion I am an Ink Addict. As an Addict I have become a great fan of several ink manufacturers (J. Herbin,Pelikan). As a very enthusiastic fan I am now in frequent contact with Dr Jansen. Dr Jansen is utterly friendly and passionate about inks. I always like to share my enthusiasm on Fountain Pens, Inks and shops. So I do frequently post my enthusiasm on De Atramentis now…. (Help Dr Jansen a bit on translation, he is better at ink making than at English he said) Well I believe these inks are superb again. They perfectly well and I can use more colours now at work One disadvantage: The green does not shade. The Brown does! I also have a black Document ink that I will review soon. I Will test the thinning agent too and post my version of “50 shades of grey” . I simply love De Atramentis for its creativity, the huge array of inks and being always open for their clients. And…. I love the wine inks…. They taste horribly but are of sheer beauty…. (I will post the Merlot soon) Dr Jansen was so kind to send Amberlea a bottle of Document Turquoise and Magenta. I believe Amberlea lks these colours and will test them. See you soon Peter

    Bordeaux Red - De Atramentis

De Atramentis is german manufacturer of calligraphy and writing ink. The inks are hand made (the entire production process is done manually in their manufacturing center) by i's founder - Dr. Franz-Josef Jensen. I believe he uses high quality dyes from well established European companies like BASF and Bayer. De Atramentis offers a variety of "traditional" fountain pen inks and a broad selection of special and scented inks. I believe they should get more attention as the quality od these fluids is very good and some colors are simply stunning. Bordeaux red is rather decent ink with good properties however it's not stunning. And as I'm biased and try a lot of inks I look for these that will make me say WOW.This makes me say: "nice" and nice is too little once you've tried 300 - 400 inks. http://imageshack.com/a/img746/7382/r1fQGc.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img540/3784/myi0q4.jpg Kitchen towel http://imageshack.com/a/img633/3323/EDNTri.jpg Software ID: http://imageshack.com/a/img538/5083/pq4NLD.jpg Color range http://imageshack.com/a/img673/7800/hb2WZi.jpg Rhodia - Pilor Custom Heritage 92, M nib http://imageshack.com/a/img661/1341/YPrsCu.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img911/2339/5dep6H.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img673/1891/6E09B3.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img901/7343/5vewsx.jpg

De Atramentis makes nice and well-behaved inks. Some time ago they started selling a line of inks for Amazon. De Atramentis Rote Rosen Review

-This review is an adapted version of the one that can be found on my personal blog (www.pencilcaseblog.com). Visit my blog for more pictures, a copy of the written review and of course many other pen, pencil, paper and ink reviews. Enjoy the review! (De Atramentis Rote Rosen review: http://www.pencilcaseblog.com/2014/06/inktastic-de-atramentis-rote-rosen.html )- Discovering a new ink brand is always exciting, especially when the ink smells like roses! At first, I was really excited about the perfume, it was immediately noticeable when I opened the bottle. And I must admit that it actually smells quite good, like actual roses, not some synthetic rubbish! But as soon as the ink had dried on the paper, the scent faded away, and so did my original enthousiasm fade as well... So yeah, scents in inks, pretty gimmicky if you ask me. It doesn't make sense! What's the point of having ink that smells great from the bottle -even my pen smelled great when writing- but smells like any other ink (read: smells like nothing at all!) when it has dried? Conclusion: no, it won't make your love letters smell like roses! Luckily Rote rosen (literally translated: red roses) has some other qualities besides smelling good. The colour is very nice, it's a pink-ish, almost magenta shade, much darker than I expected at first, but I really like it! It also has very decent shading, so overall it doesn't appear as dark as it actually is. I was also really surprised by the performance of this ink, it is incredibly smooth! I would consider it on par with Iroshizuko inks. (So, yes that's quite good!) I expected the flow to be mediochre, as it is a red-ish ink (All other red inks I own have quite average flow), but this too was much better than expected, and I never experienced any skipping or hard starts with this ink in my TWSBI Mini! The dry-time isn't the fastest, but knowing how beautiful it is when it has dried, I can live with that! The price is on the higher side, at 13 Euros for a 30ml bottle, but I'll give it some credit because it looks great and is such a joy to use (And it will make your pens smell like roses!). As said, the scented properties are not really noteworthy, as you won't notice it anymore when the ink has dried. But all things considered I still think this is one of the prettiest and best performing inks I currently own! Dries ThePencilCaseBlog http://www.pencilcaseblog.com

    De Atramentis Fuchsia

As long as I am on a roll, let me present you another gorgeous ink. I’ll stay with Dr. Jansen’s Tintenmanufaktur for the moment and will be writing about De Atramentis ‘Fuchsia’ and as before, I’ll ramble a bit in text form in addition to my handwriting, so that it can be more easily found in the search. This is one of the samples from the random ink samples pack that I ordered from the Goulet Pen Corporation, and I’m very glad that I did include that. ) http://null.aleturo.com/Dumatborlon/5EGq+sk;%E2%99%84;summaprada;ppm-00012.jpeg The review was written on Steinbeis Vision Classic White recycling paper with an Online ‘Campus’ pen with a medium nib. The ink performs really well in this pen, but I can’t say how it would work in a finer nib, as I have no spare pens for this test. Also, I can’t really say anything about how it would perform on better paper, since I don’t have any. I’ll stay with the recycling paper for now, since I have a consistent supply of that (as opposed to the generic copy paper that is bought here which is never twice the same maker). Whereas the paper certainly might not be the best choice for fountain pen use in general, the ink has no problem with it and just performs as awesomely as on anything else that I could get my hand on so far. This is one of the most well-behaved inks that I have laid my hands on so far. As usual, scanning fountain pen ink is a bit hit-or-miss. This scanner seems to be quite well-behaved and gets quite close to the colour as on paper. ‘Fuchsia’ seems to be the most accurate description of the colour as you can get. Circumscribing it I’d say it’s darker than pink, but brighter than purple. In German, I’d call it ‘hellviolett’, or at least somewhere in the general vicinity. I have almost no colours in that range at my disposal, so I cannot really put that many comparisons on the page. The closest I got is Pelikan’s 4001 ‘violett’, which is much darker and a little bluer. ‘Fuchsia’ tends much more towards the red and has little blue in comparison. The ink flows quite wetly in this medium nib and offers stellar performance. I’ve encountered no skipping or other kinds of problems whatsoever until now. It even works quite well on paper that was mutilated by passing a laser printer multiple times—a combination which almost guarantees skipping and grief in almost every pen/ink combination that I know, with only very few exceptions. But ‘Fuchsia’ seems to swallow even that, but I assume that the broader nib plays a significant part in that. I don’t believe that my fine Waterman nib would give the same result on this front. Still, a very good result. I’m no expert at shading; of all the fountain pen jargon flying around in these forums this is the most elusive to me. All I can offer is that the ink looks vivid to me, as opposed to ‘flat’ colours like black. Judge for yourself. ) Drying time is very quick; on some papers it dries almost instantaneously, on the recycling paper a bit slower, but still rather quickly. I’d love to have some more ink-resistant paper handy, as I just love watching ink dry on the paper and observing how it changes as it dries, but I can’t have all. At least for now; now that I opened Pandora’s box this is something that is very likely to change in the near future. What else is there to say? Water resistance is rather poor, but then again, this is true for most inks. On the other hand, it doesn’t disappear completely but leaves a much brighter magenta. In this regard, it behaves similarily to Mahatma Gandhi. It does tend to smear a little bit even when dry, though, at least when one is cursed with wet fingers like myself. On the plus side, cooperation with text markers is perfect. There is some degree of bleedthrough, as with Mahatma Gandhi: http://null.aleturo.com/Dumatborlon/5EGp+sk;%E2%99%80;summaprada;ppm-00011.jpeg I didn’t notice much feathering. Here’s a high-resolution piece of the writeup: This is a rather absorbing paper and still not much feathering. http://null.aleturo.com/Dumatborlon/5EGp+sk;%E2%99%80;summaprada;ppm-00010.jpeg When I first put it to use, the colour was considerably lighter and almost approached magenta. Most likely this was because of residual water in the pen from the flushing; I’ve included that scan nonetheless, at the very least you get an idea how the ink will behave when diluted. http://null.aleturo.com/Dumatborlon/5EGp+sk;%E2%99%80;summaprada;ppm-00007.jpeg As to combining this colour with others: As you can see in my writeup, I’ve paired it with ‘De Atramentis Mahatma Gandhi’ (dark yellow) and ‘Monteverde turquoise’ and I think they click together very well. As it stands, this particular colour is an unexpected, but all the more welcome new member of my colour lineup, or at least it will be so once I get around to buying a full bottle of it. Unless I find an even better ink in that general direction, this will definitely happen soon. This is the second De Atramentis ink that I’ve been testing and so far I’ve been very impressed with their work. Unfortunately that means that I will have to buy more of their ink, but that’s a sacrifice that I’m more than willing to make.

    Ochre Yellow - De Atramentis

I really like De Atramentis inks. I believe Dr Jensen produces one of the best inks. However Ocher Yellow doesn't play in the same league as other DA inks. I believe it had to be some kind of accident at work. This ink lacks saturation - it's plain and boring and dull. It could be interesting if only the saturation would be stronger - it has lots of shading potential - untapped potential. 23. Allied Forces Germany- France De Atramentis Merlot – J. Herbin Terre de Feu Dear FPN Friends Here is my second Ink comparison in the Allied Forces series. This time to red(dish) inks. One from Germany, De Atramentis Merlot and one from France, J. Herbin Terre de Feu. http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/Allied%20Forces%20terre%20de%20Feu%20Da%20Merlot/AlliedforcesteredefuemerlotFPn_zps05ba3e3e.jpg I have reviewed these inks in separate review already. These reviews are quite thorough (in my humble opinion), I Therefore do not go into details here. J. Herbin Terre de Feu Review https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/270246-j-herbin-terre-de-feu/ De Atramentis Wine Ink Merlot https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/270756-de-atramentis-wine-ink-merlot/ Why this comparison Well first of all they they are dark(er) red(dish) inks. And as I aways like to do a little story or history, I put in the WW I theme in this comparison On August 28. Of 2014 Austria declared war on Serbia, causing the first world war. France and Germany were adversaries in this war. They are know united in the European Union... and for me so these beautiful ink companies are. The De Atramentis is an Ink made of Wine in this case Merlot. There are several wine inks available. J. Herbin is an very old French ink companie producing inks with the most beautiful names in the ink business. On the Inks. Colour: Both are reddisch inks. The Merlot of course is more red, because it is made of red wine. The Terre the Feu is more of a soil brown (Terre is soil in French) with a distinctive dar red touch to it. Both inks remind me of Wine though. The Merlot for the Merlot Wine (originates from Bordeaux) the Terre the Feu reminds me of the soil the Merlot (and other grapes) are growing on in some French wine estates…. Well, my advice drink a glass o wine reading this…Cheers http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/Allied%20Forces%20terre%20de%20Feu%20Da%20Merlot/Alliedforcesteredefuemerlotblatt2FPN_zpsa1803f11.jpg Conclusion Is there a winner and therefore a looser? In this comparsion.... Just like in WW I there are no true winners here. In contrary to WW I where there were only loosers in 1918. Some lost more some of them less less, but everyone lost brothers in the Terre de Sang (Blood Soil)... .. There is just good news ... there are NO loosers here . Both are quality inks, Both shade superbly, both inks are smooth and a dream to write with. No ink is better or worse. They are both yuality inks. They both shade superbly and are a dream to write with Just like a father who wil not chose between his sons, I will not choose either. I am happy to have both "brothers" standing next to each other in my Fountain Pen & Ink cabinet.... (Well buy them both if you can't choose they are not that expensive).... Well not for politics here.... but ... France offered there Friendship to Germany who kindly accepted. Resulting in the European Community. There has been peace in (Western) Europe for 69 years now.., I have therefore written down the text of Friedrich von Schillers Ode to Joy. Friedrich von Schiller was a German poet, writer and Philosopher, who honourably received the French statemanship. Beethoven put Ode to Joy on music in his 9th Symphony it is now the symbol of peace and brotherhood in Europe http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/Allied%20Forces%20terre%20de%20Feu%20Da%20Merlot/AlliedforcesteredefuemerlotOdetojoyFPN_zpsae94fbcb.jpg Since the pen is mightier than the sword, I hope this peace will unite brothers and sisters worldwide in the coming 100 years*... Regards Peter Well I guess everyone is entitled to have beautiful dreams .

    Mould In Inks

Mould in Inks I have noticed some topics and posts concerning the problem of mould building in fountain pen inks. Since this can be a nasty problem I have searched and found a solution for your fungus trouble. As some of you might know I am an ink fan and I have posted some reviews and articles on this subject. In doing so I came in contact with the friendly Dr Franz Josef Jansen the owner of De Atramentis, an Ink brand that I like a lot. Dr Jansen wrote an article and offers a solution for fungus problems on his website www.die-tintenmanufaktur.de . This website is in English only but since Dr Jansen kindly allowed me to translate the articles (on ink and ink history) on his website, I so did for you… The text down below in blue is a translation of the article “Schimmelbildung in Tinten für Füllfederhalter which can be found clicking the link here http://die-tintenmanufaktur.de/seiten/schimmelbildung.htm Mould building in Fountain Pen inks Most modern inks are (partially) made of organic materials. As in other organic products like cheese or other foods, also in ink mould building may occur. Mould building in inks is a very old problem. In the middle ages several substances were added to the ink in order to prevent mould building The mould building in inks usually originates from using the ink rather than the production of the ink. J Herbin had a problem a few years ago (after changing the recipes after the changing of safety rules for ink)1 but conquered this problem very sufficiently and offered an excellent service to their customers who bought their inks https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/213803-update-on-j-herbin-ink-problems/ Fungi spores can be found almost everywhere, in the air and in the dust surrounding us and they even can be found on the human skin. These fungi spores usually do not cause any trouble, but can become a nuisance or even dangerous when high humidity levels meet organics fabrics… Fungi love paper, textile fabrics, leather and even plastics... Fever blisters on you Fountain Pen If a Fountain Pen is dipped in a contaminated inks successively your Fountain Pen will be contaminates ad so contaminates all (other) inks you dip it in. Since Fountain Pens may use delicate filling systems and Fountain pens are made of delicate materials destroying the fungi in it can be difficult. Acids for example are deadly to fungi but can be deadly for your Fountain Pen as well. Also ultrasound cleaning does not sufficiently terminate the fungi! What to do · Dispose the contaminated ink · Clean your Fountain Pen using lukewarm water · Disinfect your Fountain Pen using a Fountain Pen friendly anti mycosis agent2. Leave the agent in your fountain pens for 24 hours · After 24 hours clean and rinse your pen…. Your Fountain Pen now can be filled with your favourite ink again. How to prevent mould building in your Fountain Pens · Seal the ink bottle carefully · Do not leave your ink bottles open for longer periods of time. This can of course be a problem in dip pen calligraphy where the bottle remains opened and the pen is dipped very often3. · Ink pots/wells…. Only use ink well that can be sealed. Although some ink wells are of sheer beauty, they are not suited for fountain pens when they cannot be sealed. · Wash and disinfect4 your hands before touching the nib · Never leave your Fountain Pen uncapped. Cap it before putting it down on your desk! 2Anti-mycosis agent for Fountain Pens De Atramentis offers a special agent to disinfect your Fountain Pen. It can be obtained by calling Dr Jansen on the following number 00 49 026629477058 or by sending an E-mail to the following address info@die-tintenmanufaktur.de . Make sure your insert the word ANTI SCHIMMEL LÖSUNG in your E-mail, this way Dr Jansen immediately knows what you need. In the USA Goulet Pens carries De Atramentis, US Americans might ask there. 1Changed ink Recipes Recipes today should meet some safety standards. All ingredients must be safe for children. In Europe this standard is EN71-3. All De Atramentis inks meet this standard. Since J Herbin is a French company I reckon their inks comply with this standard too. 4Calligraphy I don’t know but may bay one could poor some ink in a separate well. After writing the ink should be disposed of and the well should be disinfected… (Ask your pharmacist for an agent. This of course does not have to be fountain pen safe) Hand disinfection. You could hold your hands in the fire, if your hands turn necrotic so the fungi will. But maybe it is better to ask the above mentioned pharmacist for a hand disinfecting solution. To conclude and offer you some more help As always I hope this article was informative (and useful if you have contaminated inks). If you have problems with Mould in you inks but you have difficulties with ordering the anti-mycosis agent please send me a message. I will get in contact with De Atramentis and translate Dr Jansen’s instructions for you… I will try to offer you as much help as I can. I will start a new line of ink topics next. It will be titled Allied Forces. In here I will compare inks with (approximately) the same colours from different manufactures. The first will be: Allied Forces: J Herbin Lie de Thé vs. De Atramentis Khaki Warm Regards Peter
