    De Atramentis - Steel Blue

I received a bottle of De Atramentis Steel Blue as part of my prize in the renaming competition. There are not many reviews of this ink on FPN, so I thought I'd give it a try. It's a nice ink with lots of shading and a good amount of sheen as well. It fethers slightly on low quality paper. The colour is teal, but probably on the bluer half of the spectrum. Sometimes it looks quite blue, and sometimes it looks rather green. If it had been slightly blue, this would have been a top 3 colour, in my book. http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv27/AndyYNWA/Ink%20reviews/De%20Atrementis%20Inks/6375b17d-fa1e-4697-9c3a-a8d0b5b54483_zpsxrz0ymmq.jpg Water resistance is non-existant. At least on Oxford Optik paper. http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv27/AndyYNWA/Ink%20reviews/De%20Atrementis%20Inks/c1006f8a-50df-47ca-b1a0-fe77511c6b9a_zpsysj5lm1q.jpg The sheen is really nice. Sorry for the poor picture, my iPhone doesn't like the lighting in my office. http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv27/AndyYNWA/Ink%20reviews/De%20Atrementis%20Inks/9c95557c-4772-4ea0-84a3-97e2802d52f3_zpsmliosuvl.jpg

    Jeans Blue - De Atramentis

De Atramentis is german manufacturer of calligraphy and writing ink. The inks are hand made (the entire production process is done manually in their manufacturing center) by i's founder - Dr. Franz-Josef Jensen. I believe he uses high quality dyes from well established European companies like BASF and Bayer. Jeans Blue is nice denim-blue color. It goes on dark blue but dries to a bluish-gray tint with a slight hint of greenFairly fast-drying and has an appreciable uncapped time. 4. I'm one of the lucky winners in the name renaming of the De Atramentis Sepia ink. In my price it was included one bottle of ink of my choice from De Atramentis. I'm looking for a blue with good shading. I have been looking at reviews and pictures both here at FPN and also on other places in cyber space. The results are a bit inconclusive... Pictures of the same ink showing different colors and also very different amounts of shading. Of course shading is quite dependant of the paper, but still... The inks I'm most curious about are Steel Blue, Sherlock Holmes and Audular Blue, but I'm open for suggestions. I wan't a medium-dark blue with lots of shading. Anyone with some experience of these inks?

    De Atramentis Ink

It's no secret that I love De Atramentis ink. The colours stands out perfectly, They run smoothly through the pen and they are waterproof. This sketch is made with De Atramentis document brown. A brown colour very close to a classic burnt umber, maybe a tiny bit warmer. It's drawn with a TWSBI DIAMOND 580, EF nib. In a Stillman and Birn sketchbook, gamma serie, 150 gsm.
  7. Several months ago there was a thread (which I can't find right now) about the release of De Atramentis Bookworm ink: a muddy green ink that smells of old books. *sigh*. I hunted high and low all over the world for this ink but couldn't find a stockist. In the end I asked the great people at larrypost.com.au (no affiliation, just a satisfied customer) if they could get me some and they promised to add it to their next order. Well it has arrived and my 3 bottles are on their way. So if you're in the antipodes, love the smell of old books and like green ink, head over to the good people at larrypost.com.au and get some before I buy it all!

The inks are hand made (the entire production process is done manually in their manufacturing center) by i's founder - Dr. Franz-Josef Jensen. I believe he uses high quality dyes from well established European companies like BASF and Bayer. De Atramentis offers a variety of "traditional" fountain pen inks and a broad selection of special and scented inks. I believe they should get more attention as the quality od these fluids is very good and some colors are simply stunning. Jules Verne (Deep Sea Blue) is reasonably saturated blue ink. It's well behaved and lubricates the nib nicely. http://imageshack.com/a/img631/1176/ECG639.jpg Ink Splash http://imageshack.com/a/img910/4220/X7KAf2.jpg Drops of ink on kitchen towel http://imageshack.com/a/img905/2269/W0WYtu.jpg Waterproofness http://imageshack.com/a/img912/8831/naugZX.jpg Software ID http://imageshack.com/a/img538/1320/GHIdDG.jpg Clairefontaine, Kaweco Skyline Sport, BB http://imageshack.com/a/img912/131/n7y0qn.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img905/3549/o8bPSt.jpg Tomoe River, Kaweco Skyline Sport, BB http://imageshack.com/a/img910/387/pKTcLY.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img910/889/uE80Oc.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img913/3184/RBhyCo.jpg G. 10. I understand the basic math: Wet nib = More ink = Darker ink line (appears more saturated)Dry nib = Less ink = Lighter ink line (appears less saturated)Here's where I'm stuck. Fell in love with De A's Thomas Alva Edison, convinced this was destined to be my "signature color" after using it in the TWSBI Diamond 580, M nib, filled from a sample vial (Anderson's? Goulet?). The ink was too wet for the M nib, so I swapped in a F, and the combination was magic. Deep, dark, saturated color, albeit not as much glide, due to the finer nib. Today, I finally cleaned, then filled, my Pelikan m805 Demonstrator for the first time. Same ink color---this time, using a bottle purchased from Exotic Blanks (the only folks who still had this in stock). The shock is how, in spite of there being so much ink on the page (this pen's a gusher, drats), the color looks considerably lighter than it did in a drier nib and finer line. Logic tells me this is the opposite of what one would expect. I emptied the pen, gently shook the bottle, refilled, and still...the ink looks less saturated. My question: Is De A ink inconsistent, when it comes to saturation? Did I get lucky with the sample vial, but end up with a "thinner" iteration in bottled form?
  11. I've noticed recently that De Atrementis, Diamine, and some Montblanc special edition ink bottles share the same lid design. I'm now wondering if these inks are made by the same manufacturer. Montblanc recently came out with an ink called 'blue hour' which, judging from online swabs, looks very similar to diamine twilight. Both have very similar names. Also, De Atramentis and Montblanc have inks called Mahatma Gandhi and look very similar. Is it possible that these inks are made by the same manufacturer? Let me know your thoughts.

  23. Oh boy, photographing pens is already quite a hassle, but scanning or photographing ink is a nightmare. In any case, this is my first attempt at doing a review. Only after I’ve written all this up I noticed all those sticky threads at the top of the forum; well, I won’t be redoing it now, it’s way too late already. ) I will try to update the review with any suggestions though, as soon as I have the time for it. Well, anyway. Since I couldn’t find anything on ‘De Atramentis Mahatma Gandhi’ I thought I’d whip up a quick review of it. It looks like of all inks I’ve got, I managed to pick the one which is most difficult to get into a decent picture. That’s to people who still say that fountain pens are dead. Ink on paper has character, whereas coloured pixels on a tablet are just plain and boring. On to the review then, shall we? To summarise what I’ve written on paper and to have something indexable for Google and its friends I’ll state that this is a yellow ink. The scanner in particular has an absolutely terrible time dealing with it and just plain gives up. On the scan, the ink is orange; on paper, it is actually far brighter than that. Not as bright as in the photograph, but the photograph gets much closer than the scan. Let’s say the colour is almost as bright as the pen with which I’ve written the sample (and which is visible in the photograph). As already said: It’s a difficult ink. At least with my writing implement it writes rather wetly, but dries quite quickly. It gives a decent amount of shading (at least as much as can be seen with such a bright colour), does only feather on particularily bad paper (the sample is written on recycling paper). It offers no water resistance and will go out of its way to dissolve in the weirdest, most garish yellow hues imaginable, as if you popped a highlighter pen right onto the page. I now notice that I wanted to show the non-water-resistance as well but forgot; I will try to make a photo of it tomorrow. Depending on the paper, the ink does tend to bleed through, especially on bad paper. But this may also be an artifact on the rather broad nib of this pen. Well, I don’t know what else to say about this ink. To sum it up: I like it, much so in fact. I will definitely keep using it; it’s just great for headlines, especially with a broader stroke and is just a fun, goofy ink to write, while being just dark enough to stay legible. But just barely so; I don’t think I’ll be writing page after page in this particular colour or if so, I’ll be looking for a brighter paper first. ) Now on to the pictures. First the scan. The colour is way off, though: http://null.aleturo.com/Dumatborlon/5EGp+sk;sierre;jpeg-00091b.jpeg Since the scan is so far off, there’s a photograph of the writing sample as well: http://null.aleturo.com/Dumatborlon/5EGp+sk;%E2%99%80;saguaro;jpeg-00895.jpeg I hope this is useful to someone and if not, at least it was fun to do. ) Cheers, Zefon

What a silly pillock that Morbus Curiositas is There is no country named Framerica... ...Well you are partially right.... There isno country named Framerica ... But Waterman was founded in America and is now produced in France (l' Homme d'eau???) and is part of the American Newell Rubberdoll company... Who cares..... Let's role! De Atramentis Wilhelm 2 - Waterman I did a review of De Atramentis Wilhelm 2 yesterday and had a déjà vu... http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/Waterman%20Havana/colour%20comp%20fpn_zps6ygn81yv.jpg Well don't know but I see similarities... But maybe I need new glasses or even worse I need to see a neurologist because I have a loose contact (er eh a new one ) that interferes my cognition.... Maybe you could help here.... will insert some side to side comparisons here and leave the judgment upto you....In the end you may decide... Blow my nose with ink comparison http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/Waterman%20Havana/Havana%20WH2%20blow%20my%20nose%20comparrison_zpsgwm9stkq.jpg Ink Vomitus comparison http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/Waterman%20Havana/Havana%20WH2%20vomit%20comparison_zpsg1qlvgiq.jpg Both inks have a red brown volour. In daylight the Wilhelm 2 has a bit more (wine?) red and Havana tends to a rust brown, a bit darker than ordinary iron rust though. But that is in larger "surfaces" like above.... How is that in written text.... Let's see Handwritten text comparisons http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/Waterman%20Havana/Havana%20WH2%20handwritten%20text%20comparison_zpsvbgsch0f.jpg Left is Wilhelm 2 and right is Havana both text were taken from the succesive reviews http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/Waterman%20Havana/Havana%20WH2%20samplertext%20comparison_zpsr3ry3q1p.jpg This is a close up from the Havana sampler form (see down here) http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/Waterman%20Havana/Havana%20WH2%20sampler%20comparison_zpsjb1cqte4.jpg Ink Behaviour Both inks are smooth. Both inks are wet but the Wilhelm 2 is wetter... De Atramentis inks usually are. Both inks dry quickly and the De Atramentis ink even faster. Both inks only show little shading but this is compensated by the high sauration resultign in rich and deep colours. Feathering is absent in both inks... the De Atramentis shows just a very little more showthrough but in both case this isn't an issue the reason For more showthrough might be this: http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a617/Morbus_Curiositas/Waterman%20Havana/Havana%20WH2%20Cousteau%20comparison_zpsba51mtcw.jpg After half an hour underwater. The De Atramentis ink lost it's colour but the text is still legible.... The Waterman ink dissapeared quicker than your saving after the 2008 Bank crisis.... That might be the reason why the Wilhelm 2 shows a very little more showthrough.... This in my opinion does not make the Waterman less, good remember both inks were not designed to be waterproof. The Wilhelm 2 is therefore maybe even more suited for use at work...
