I found this hilarious old thing on eBay, which is just what the doctor (in my case, a hand surgeon) ordered. It's got a Conklin Cushion nib, but is it really a Conklin? I've seen a few of these, but they're mostly Japanese. Any clues?

So I have been collecting fountain pens for a little over a month now and I think I have quite a good start to the vintage side of things. My first pen was the Pelikan 400 I found in a box in the garage that belonged to a late family friend who passed away in 2009. It's in fantastic condition and an excellent writer. That boosted my interest and now I think I have a pretty good collection! What do you guys think? From left to right" Parker Challenger (pre-war vac filler), Parker Vacumatic (1940s), Conklin Glider (1940s), Pelikan 400 (1950s), Waterman's Ideal 52 1/2 V (Canada 1910s), and a Sheaffer (1970s). Now what to get next?

Hello! Craig here from Orange County California! I am extremely new to the world of fountain pens but I found it in a really cool way. When I was young, I had a family friend who gave me unique Christmas and birthday gifts. I received a LeBoeuf pencil one year and the next was a sterling silver dip pen. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2008 from a long battle with lung cancer. He was a world traveler, and hailed originally from Portugal. Now 8 years later we are still finding things he collected. Digging around in an old box, I pulled out 3 pens. A green Celluloid Pelikan 400 from the 50s, an all stainless French made Waterman, and a mid-70s Sheaffer. This was on July 25th. Now just a few weeks later, I have a TWSBI Mini, a Noodler's Konrad, a Vintage Conklin Glider, and have just picked up a Waterman's 52 1/2 V! I feel like I am just getting started and at 28 years old, I have tons more collecting to do! I look forward to learning as much as I can from this community! Attached is all of my pens/pencils. The 1935 Mickey Mouse pencil was also in that box! Hope everyone has a great August! Cheers! -Craig

Can Anyone Tell Me Anything About This Vintage Conklin Nib?
gamingoodz posted a topic in Of Nibs & Tines
I bought a Conklin rolled gold vintage pen off ebay on chance hoping it would be flexible with crappy pictures. The nib didn't end up being flexible but the pen cleaned up great and was still a good deal.. The nib however is strange to me though, its not a standard tipping like most pens. The tipping angles down at the end like a birds beak or something. I have heard of custom grinds like this for turning the pen over and writing a nice fat line ( Which it actually does if you turn it over) but I didn't think this would be something on a stock Conklin nib. Can anyone tell me anything about this nib? Is it common to have the beak shape like that? I don't see any other conklins looking on eBay with the same nib. http://i.imgur.com/uj4paLml.jpg http://i.imgur.com/OKJK0hYl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Y1o1YtEl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/4lLhTJOl.jpg http://i.imgur.com/pjURSSQl.jpg -
I am writing this on behalf of my friend. He is looking for a conklin fountain pen, not the current models, which size is similar to Parker Duofold Centennial: The uncapped length approx. 127mm, diameter of the barrel approx. 11-12 mm, and the weight around 20g. Before I start browsing by myself, would anyone give me any suggestion? I am more familiar with Waterman vintages but for Conklin I am quiet new that I have just one very small one. Thanks for reading this! Minji

I bought a Conklin Crescent ringtop a couple of weeks ago for much more money than intended, due to a mistake with my sniper. What I got was a pen that may never have been used but had never been looked after, either. Patina is not really valued on a BCHR pen, and the filler mechanism was frozen beyond my ability to move it without breaking. So I sent it to Jack Lynch with my fingers crossed. He just sent me some pictures of what he's revealed. I feel a lot better about this purchase now.

While examining a recent acquisition - a Conklin ringtop - I noticed a crack beginning across the breather hole. Mr. Minuskin informed me that with use, the tines will eventually fall off unless someone repaired it...him, for instance. So I began to look around for a replacement nib, and saw one on the Five-Star site, which had a very similar crack. This, I thought, was interesting: that a cracked nib would still be saleable. I wondered if the quality of these nibs was sufficiently special that we'd want to keep them in use. Has anyone had this sort of experience with Conklin nibs? Are they great, flawed Greek heroes of nibs? Or is there a tendency for these things to be purchased by gorillas?

Hi, I have a Conklin pen from my grandfather, but sadly I lost that small top part of the pen, I think is “the twist knob”. Knob diameter is 10mm at the widest point. Attach photo: Please, someone know of a place to get the parts? How i can get that missing part? Thank´s in advance, Pedro Miguel Silva

Conklin All American Nib Corrosion After Only Two Months...
mhphoto posted a topic in USA - North America
I bought a Conklin All American from the Goulets a few months back, and today I got it to use only to discover that the nib refused to convey ink down to the tipping material. I flushed it and noticed some corrosion. And the underside of the nib looks almost like the old Mabie Todd dip nibs that were roughed up on the bottom so ink could get a better purchase. Has anyone else heard of this problem with Conklins? And it's not like I've been using some super corrosive ink or anything—the only inks that have ever been in it are Waterman Black and Serenity Blue. That's some pitifully bad metal stock they're using. I'm not sure which of the big three makes their nibs, but I'd like to know. I'm currently registering my pen to make a claim on the warranty. I'll keep you updated on how it's going. Yafa owns Conklin now, and I don't know if that's good or bad…- 2 replies

Hi, I was wondering if someon here could help. I have a Conklin Crescent I purchased in 2004. Well recently the threads between the body and head seem to have unexplicably shrunk and will not hold itself together. I thought I had a lifetime warranty, but apparently the company was bought out in 2007 and they don't honor previous warraties. I tried to just buy a new pen but it seems the new one has the body glued to the head at this joint. Which I found really odd because I have had to change the bladder in the one I have a couple times. It seems like the new ones would be hard to maintain.. so I returned it. So I am hoping someone can give me a lead on a replacement part. The rest of my pen, including the nib and body and cap are all in good shape. I would just need a new head. Here is a photo of my old one:
