    Show Your Feed!

When cleaning and refilling one of my Wing Sung 3008 pens to give it to my son who wanted to use it in school I encountered a stubborn clear feed that would not want to give away all of its orange glory (Akkerman #16 Oranje Boven) after cleaning and even after refilling the pen with Lamy (Royal) Blue. So I was able to take the following pictures. Edit: (Was interrupted before I could add what I was going for, tsss ...) What do your feeds look like? Do you have unusual or unusually beautiful feeds? I am sure you have!

    Flushing A Montblanc 147

After puzzling over this for a while, I had the idea of snipping the end off a long cartridge and inserting it instead of the MB cartridge-carrying cassette. The long cartridge protrudes far enough from the back of the pen body to allow the use of a bulb syringe for a thorough flush It know it seems an obvious idea, but I decided to post it here, in hopes that it may help someone
  3. Hey everyone! I'm currently in the market for a pen and the Pelikan M605 Translucent White has caught my eye. From what I understand however a white lacquer pen is a hard thing to keep clean. Does anyone have experience with how much of a commitment keeping a white pen white is? EDIT: My main concerns are with staining and yellowing. I've heard that red ink can stain the interior of a demonstrator before and I'm concerned about something similar but on the exterior of a white pen.
  4. I am getting ready to travel internationally for a few weeks on business. Only a couple of my FPs will be coming with me. I am one of those people who don't like to leave ink in my pens for over a couple of weeks. So, today is pen cleaning day! This is a ritual that I actually do every two weeks. I will flush and clean each of pens, including those I will be taking, and inspecting them under magnifier. Yes, I am a little obsessive sometimes. But to me there is nothing worse that seeing dried ink caked all over my fountain pens. What are the "rituals" that you go through with your fountain pens on a regular basis?
  5. Two questions: 1. How do you flush and clean ink from a pen with this sort of filler? I use a pen for a few weeks then clean it and put it away for months before it sees use again. I'm concerned this filler isn't appropriate for that usage pattern. 2. Longevity of diaphragm. Any estimates on that? What's ages a diaphragm most: pumps, inks, or simply time.
  6. Hello fellow FPNers! I'm wondering what your worst or funniest or whatnot cleaning experience has been? Did you put it together backwards? Did you omit something? Did something get in that shouldn't? Did you catastrophically break a pen? (eek) I'll start with mine. This weekend (and some of last) was pen cleaning bonanza! I hadn't cleaned many pens in a while, I want to send a couple of them off to get professional tuned, and I had a few Pilot Varsity models that needed cleaning and refilling for a friend. So, I did the harder ones first and last weekend, cleaned the rest over the course of this weekend. The five year old was running rampant bothering the dog or the dog was bothering him - hard to tell. I got to cleaning my Lamy 2000 (someday I'll put the story about it up in the review section but let's say I'm versed in how it is). It seemed off at some point in cleaning it, especially after reassembling it made squeaking noises and the piston was stiff. So, I let it sit and when everything was dry and came time to fill up a few new pens, I pulled out the Lamy again. I filled from a gently used bottle of Sailor Blue Black I was gifted from my recent stop to the local pen store that is closing. The owner was nice to gift it to me as I mentioned seeing it behind the counter and he's never sold anything sailor that I knew about. He said you want it - it's half full and so I got more ink! I fill the pen with the couple others I plan to use for the next couple weeks. I sit down as the kid continues to run about the house - The Legend of Zelda has now crossed with dinosaurs of some sort. I get to the Lamy and the first strokes are fine. Then it skips. It's being SUPER picky about the writing angles with my Lamy 2000 has never had, especially being an F nib. I go to dump the ink back in the bottle (I know I shouldn't but it's used anyway and I had JUST filled from it). Well, after two small turns of the piston I feel and see ink coming out at a high velocity - your foot is very good at soaking up ink that would have ended up on the floor. Thankfully I was barefoot and my floor is some fake/real/cheap wood that easily wipes up. I finish draining the pen SLOWLY and deliberately now. I get it taken apart all the way. I find, somehow from my cleaning, a huge wad of paper towel. At first it looked like ink gunk, but the bottle had none and it was A LOT. I realized it's paper towel when I plucked it off the nib/feed. Anyway, refilled, pen works great. I like the blue black. The Lamy 2000 is perfect again. So what are your stories?
  7. What is the best way to clean a Hero 616? I would like to clean out the Parker Quink black and re-ink it with Lamy Blue-Black.
  8. I have a 20 year old Parker with a medium gold nib. It sat empty for 15 years. I used to use Mont Blanc blue and black inks. Now using Noodler's green. When I inked it up it was renamed Skippy...verrry dry. I cleaned it with 10% ammonia, 90% distilled water, afew drops of detergent. Not great, so I did some minor nib adjustments per Youtube and that helped, but not great yet. I looked at the feed with the nib off...under a microscope... and saw white crystalline deposits, some kind of salts, in the capillary channels on the top side of the feed (the side just under the nib). I soaked an hour in cleaner, poked with a small pin and got most of the superficial stuff out. There are still a few deposits deep in the capillary channel. Is there anything that might dissolve that? I haven't re-inked yet, and it may be good, but I'd like to get all the salts out before inking again. Help!, Skippy
  9. Hello fellow ink users, I don't know where this question fits, so I presume that best bet is "ink" department/forum. Before I go and start looking at youtube videos - I should ask here, where there must be many people who experienced similar problem. In the excitement while inking a new pen, few drops of Iroshizuku Yama Budo and few drops of Ku Jaku - ended up on my kitchen granite countertop. Few drops I managed to clean with water quickly, but few I've noticed to late. Now I have several colorful spots and I cannot remove them. The ink (it seems) seeped into the granite pores. Any tips on how to clean this? Short of - replacing the granite countertop. Thank you !!!! (below is the photo)
  10. Has anyone ever figured out how to safely remove the feed from the section of the Preppy/Plaisir so it can be cleaned and dried faster? In some SBRE Brown video he mentioned that he had been utterly unable to remove the fin-feed from the clear section of either his Preppys or Plaisirs, said that as cheap pen you have to deal with it, but complained that it took 'forever' for it to dry inside its clear tube section after rinsing it out. Well, I just got my first Plaisir (light and plastic-y yes, but the .05 writes very nicely - more smoothly than my .03 Preppy) and I see exactly what he was talking about. A comparison between a normal fountain pen feed to the Preppy/Plaisir (from this old post): http://www.pbase.com/liverman/image/141447107/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/liverman/image/141447688/original.jpg I really don't want to have to wait 'forever' for my pen to be ready to be re-inked. Has anyone gotten the feed out of the section easily?
  11. Hello FPN, can anyone help me with get rid of red stains left behind by Diamine Brilliant Red ink in my pilot Custom 74 demonstrator (was in pen only for a week). I have tried hot/cold water, ammonia solution, bleach solution and somehow there are few spots that are unbelievably stubborn and don't want to go away. any suggestions on how to get rid of it?

    Water And The Boheme

So, my Boheme with the OB nib has shipped from Pentooling! And there is one thing that I still am not clear on with the Boheme, which is cleaning. There are lots of great instructions about how to flush it out with water, and also some "don't put water in it, it'll rust the mechanism" posts. And also some old posts about MB cleaning cartridges, which I don't think exist any more. Can anyone tell me definitively whether or not flushing with water is ok? Or could I use Pen Flush instead? Or is Pen Flush just water with some chemicals in it and therefore just as risky?

    Swapping Nibs- Cleaning And Storing

Hi all! Total newb question, but one of the main selling points on my Safari Petrol was the ability to explore different nibs without having to buy a new pen. Now that I have a second nib, how do I clean and store the one that is currently on my pen? (I will probably switch the nib out while the pen is still inked, using the tape trick in the Goulet video.) My first thought was to soak it for about 5 minutes in distilled water then wipe it off with a paper towel, but will this damage the black finish or otherwise harm my nib? Is there a better way of doing it? Thanks!
  14. I really like pens with ink windows, though I don't have many. 2 questions related to them: 1.) Is there a safe (and hopefully easy) way to restore vintage pens' ink windows back to their original color? I have a Sheaffer Lifetime Balance that writes really well. The ink window seems dark and I imagine that this material has changed color since it was first manufactured, though I'm not sure if this is accurate. If in fact there is discoloration that has happened, is there anything I can do to get that lightened up, making it easier to see the ink inside the pen? 2.) What current production (not custom) pens have ink windows? Those that come to mind are: Lamy Safari and Vista Lamy 2000 Many Pelikans Thanks.
  15. I don't know whether I should put this here or in the repairs forum, but here goes. My much loved and previously pristine Swan Calligraph Prefect from about 1953 suffered an ink burp and I can't get the stains off it. I tried a very diluted ammonia solution. Less dilute? A light alcohol? Any help appreciated!

    Unidentifiable "lamy" Converter

Heya peeps So my mother recently uncovered her Lamy Safari from when she was much my age (so it's ~20 years old, I'm guessing), and decided to give it to me, knowing that I was into fountain pens. It's a little the worse for wear (or lack of, rather), as she didn't clean it out before it got shelved, containing a goodly quantity of blue sediment. I eventually got the pen apart and (mostly) cleaned up, but the converter is giving a little more resistance. http://i.imgur.com/tNBBwXZ.jpg It's marked as being a Lamy converter, but it's neither a Z24 nor a Z26. The twiddly plastic grip section is circular and ribbed, rather than the semi-rectangular flat of the standard Lamy converters, and the metal divider between the knob and the clear reservoir has etchings at the top of it, all rather different to the Z2* converters. I can't find any mention (or graphical evidence) of these existing anywhere. Anyway, I'm having some difficulty working out how to disassemble it. Regardless of whether it's an authentic, if outdated, Lamy converter, I'd be happy to continue using it if only I could get it apart to give it a good clean. Does anybody have any tips about its origins or how to get the little bugger apart? A few more images.
  17. Has anyone ever purchased or used this? I was looking at this product and was curious whether it was safe for the rest of the barrel as well. Or why it was marketed as only for the nib and feed...? Was also curious about the viability of this cleaning solution for vintage pens (thinking of using it on Montblanc 22/24/31/342/Monte Rosa)
  18. Dear all, I have a Montblanc Rollerball that I want to refill with my own ink (for more color variety, and to use other inks besides Montblanc's inks, as well as use up my stock of ink.. I have too much). I looked online and saw tutorials on how to do so. Pop the tail cap off the Refill, pour ink in, pop cap back on. Easy right? However, my issue pertains to cleaning. Because I would like to change the ink color (originally black). I ran water through the cartridge and after a while it ran clear. But I left it for an hour or so to dry, came back, and flicked it, and got lots of ink coming out again. I figured since the cartridge was old it had some dried up. So I soaked it in water for 3 days. Each day I changed the water and flicked water out of the cartridge. There is always some residual black ink leftover. I noticed that the inside has a piece of felt. Although I don't have tweezers so I couldn't pull it out, I was wondering if the best way was to pull this felt out and clean it out before cleaning the metal cartridge or if there was a more efficient way of doing this. Or should I just not bother with changing ink colors?? Thanks all in advance!
  19. Hi! I recently purchased a Sailor 1911 S Demonstrator and somehow I have gotten ink in between the metal part of the section and the plastic part of the section (probably when I was filling it. Here is a photo of what I'm referring to. Does anyone know how to get the ink out from between the two parts. I have removed the nib and feed but don't see how to get to where the ink is. Thanks!
  20. So I have been considering getting a vacuum filling pen, as from my understanding they seem to hold more ink than piston fillers. I don't swap colors in my pens that much, so having a pen that could have a lot of ink in one fill is great. Cartridge converter pens don't really hold enough ink for me, as I like to practice my writing by transcribing a page or two of a book each day. My only real concern that's holding me back from getting a vacuum filler is that I don't know how much maintainance it would need.Do Vacuum filler pens have about the same amount of maintenance than a piston filler? The only piston filler I have experience with is a Noodler's Konrad which is very easy to clean, as the nib and feed pop right out and I haven't needed to grease anything yet.
  21. I would like to share my experience with cleaning a pen after prolonged exposure to Iron-Gall ink. I've filled my TWSBI 580 Diamond with KWZ Ink IG Blue Black in April 2016, and refilled it six times without flushing (despite warnings on KWZ Ink webpage). In February 2017 my pen looked like that: http://i.imgur.com/GkSBpOj.jpg Along piston operating range barrel was clean, but below there was dark residue. I've asked Mrs KWZI for some hints on cleaning my pen. She adviced me to crush three pills of Vitamin C (in Poland Vitamin C is sold as 200mg pills), dissolve them in 30ml of water, and load this solution to my pen and keep it there for a few minutes, and repeat this procedure until residue is dissolved. I had no Vitamin C at home, so I used the following procedure: I've measured 1g of citric acid (white pellets).I've added ~50ml of demineralized water (tap water is very hard at my place, it is the same demineralized water I use to fill steam iron).I've heated it to 35° Celsius (to make it easier to dissolve citric acid, this step is not strictly necessary, but I had baby bottle heater available)I've stirred it (or rather shaken, as my container had a lid).I've filled my pen with solution, waited 5-10 minutes, gave it good shake and emptied it.I've repeated step 5 until residue was dissolved (three more time).I've flushed the pen with demineralized water twice.http://i.imgur.com/eH33DgA.jpg Later I was told that: ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is more effective than citric acid.citric acid works better if one adds a little of baking soda.
  22. Hi, everyone I just received a fountain pen in mail. Branded as "Advokat". As far as I am aware, this is a pen made in Germany, post-war - 50's (?). Fine two tone gold plated nib, with just a little flex. That's all I know. It seems to be in full working order, writes nicely i.e. ink flows - not wet, not too dry. Came with original package and contemporary (?) ink bottle. Even if this pen seems to be an obscure brand, is there anyone out there who can give me more information? Instructions on how to dismantle the barrel, nib, clean, polish and so forth.. I'd like to take the pen apart and clean it thoroughly but am afraid to break it. Regards Juha
  23. I took my Faber-Castell Ambition on an airplane, and despite the Faber-Castell website stating "You do not need to worry about traveling by air with Faber-Castell fountain pens." it leaked a bunch of ink. Part 1: Cap liner The ink has gotten itself in between the metal cap and the plastic cap liner, and, I believe, into the spring mechanism at the end of the cap. If it's possible to do non-destructively, I'd like to remove the cap liner and clean the interior of the cap. Google's not turning up any tricks, and I haven't figured out how to pull it out myself. Does anyone know if there's a way to get the cap liner out, clean it, and put it back? Part 2: Clip spring mechanism. Ink is leaking around the clip, (which is sprung), and through the end of the cap. Is it possible to remove the spring mechanism without destroying it so I can get it cleaned up? I can't see any way to make it happen, especially with the cap liner still in the cap, but it was put together, so there must be a way to take it apart! Thanks! - John

Best Way To Clean Lamy 2000?

I'm a semi-noob looking into getting a Lamy 2000 EF. I understand the piston filling mechanism and how to disassemble the pen, but I was wondering what the standard rundown is for cleaning the 2k, especially if one were to refill with a different colored ink.

    Questions About Lamy Nexx

Hello! due to my excitement, I bought my first fountain pen, Lamy Nexx even without knowing much about it. There doesn't seem to be a lot of forums about the Nexx. I hope someone can help me with my questions here: 1. is the nib replaceable with other sizes? 2. can I use other cartridges other than the T10? Parker Quink, maybe? 3. I've heard about z24 and z26, which of the two is better? (I don't care about the red color) 4. should I not post the cap? 5. how do I clean it? Thanks! -rhjn
