    New Waterman Sets

Waterman lovers, the brand has launched three new sets for this summer! All sets include a fountain pen or ballpoint plus an iconic Waterman blue leather case! The fountain pen set: Part of the Expert line, the fountain pen features the cigar-shaped silhouette and Parisian style. Made of blue and black laquer, trims are chrome and the nib available in F and M is stainless steal. Make sure to check out the elegant striped pattern on the cap! The ballpoint pen sets: Both are part of the famous Carène line, in Waterman's blue iconic laquer and feature the same elegant shape inspired on a luxury boat. The difference? You can check it out on trims and cap. While ref 1955313 has chrome trims and the same striped pattern on the cap as the fountain pen The more exclusive 1955316 is adorned with PVD trims and the iconic wavy Carène pattern. 2. I'm starting to look at my next FP acquisition. My favorites now are my Sailors (1911s naginata togi, a Sapporo, and a Pro gear) followed closely by my Pelikan M400 and Platinum Nice Pur. I really like the look of the Waterman Carene but have never had a Waterman before. I also really like the new matte blue Pilot VP and this years Platinum Kaweguchi. And of course, I would never turn my nose up at another Sailor or Pelikan.

  4. I've recently decided to upgrade my fountain pen collection to more investment pens, now that I've experimented enough to know exactly what I like: a crisp Japanese (~0.2-0.3mm) fine, relatively stiff. How is the Carène's EF by comparison? A little bit wider? A lot wider? Would grinding it to the desired width be a good idea?

    Iron Gall Doubts

Hi everyone: I've just registered into this forum as I have a doubt about iron-gall inks: I currently own a waterman carène, which is the best pen I have and has a great sentimental value, as it was given to me as a special gift. I'm trying to find a permanent ink for taking some notes i'd like to review on the future, and, from what I've read, iron-gall inks are permanent ones. I like the R&K Salix one, as I've seen it on this website reviews along with other inks. My doubt is: will my carène be harmed, or corroded if I end up using this ink? It has some kind of a gold cover on the nib, hence my doubt. And, a second one, but closely related question: Should I get a different pen for iron-gall inks? A TWSBI, for instance? Thanks for your advice
  6. 52 days ago I made this topic about a problem with my Waterman Carène: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/305762-to-waterman-carene-owners I wrongly assumed it was ink, but pen2paper raised the issue of chemicals on a leather case. I had a leather case made a couple of years ago and have been keeping the pen into it since. Then Force also came to rescue – people said he would – and recommended polishing with a polish liquid. Ghost Plane gave the final touch by recommending I used a cotton ear, since I was worried about damaging other surfaces of the pen. I must confess that I was skeptic about it, and took me almost a month to try. I knew I would be disappointed if it didn't work. BUT IT DID! I want to take all FPNers who were so kind, helpful and helped making the topic alive, especially the aforementioned ones. FPN is really a terrific place to gather and know everything about fountain pens and everything related to them! http://www.clipartkid.com/images/9/happy-dance-clipart-best-jKcPlf-clipart.png THANK YOU!!! Waterman Carene?

I am thinking of buying a next-level fountain pen (No flex. For now). I have been going through a lot of fountain pen models, searching for reviews etc but I can not decide. What I am looking for is a pen that is comfortable to hold in order to write for pages and writes smoothly. I have seen some Carene and I have to say that they are very positive. Any other recommendations of similar price range? Any experiences on the Carene? I found it cheaply on Zafeiriou for 200 eu. Better price suggestions are welcome.
  8. So here is my second pen review, again hand written. Summary: Pros - Impressive box, light weight, well engineered design and smooth. Cons - Pen does not look or feel high end, and it may not initially be apparent why the pen costs as much as it does, can be too wet leading to bleed through. http://www.overclockers.com.au/pix/image.php?id=rk77k&f=1 Click to view full size! http://www.overclockers.com.au/pix/image.php?id=yypgp&f=1 Click to view full size! http://www.overclockers.com.au/pix/image.php?id=mjg68&f=1 Click to view full size! http://www.overclockers.com.au/pix/image.php?id=shayc&f=1 Click to view full size! http://www.overclockers.com.au/pix/image.php?id=tiqz5&f=1 Click to view full size! http://www.overclockers.com.au/pix/image.php?id=umhoo&f=1 Click to view full size! http://www.overclockers.com.au/pix/image.php?id=jaocz&f=1 Click to view full size!
  9. Welcome to my first fountain pen review. This is of a waterman carene in contemporary blue and gunmetal with an XF nib. This pen was purchased (and tuned) from nibs.com. For now I will not post any pictures (as I can't be fussed to pull out the SLR) but pictures can be found from the offical website: http://www.waterman.com/en/carene/212-contemporary-blue-and-gunmetal-fountain-pen-st-3501179045580.html I think it looks better in person though! Forgive my hand writing, this is a hand written review. I did it quite hastily, the scanner didn't quite capture the ink's colour properly, it's a bit darker, but my screen isn't 100% calibrated either. enjoy! http://www.overclockers.com.au/pix/image.php?id=yayzc&f=1 Click to view full size!

    1 X Duofold Centennial Or 2 X Carène ?

I have an oppurtunity to either go for a Duofold Centennial or for the same price, 2 waterman Carène s. Looks wise, both pens are pleasing to my eye (Carène IMV is stunning ). I have not handled the Centennial or seen one in person. I do have a waterman Carène and a Parker Premier(good styling, smooth nib, balance and weight) and both are out for a nib exchange (OB, B respectively). History, tradition, lineage or vintage for that matter don't generally sway me, unless it was THE pen used by Einstein or Marie Curie. What puts a smile on my face is a well engineered, good looking elegant pen that'll last a couple of generations if USED and looked after. The geek in me prefers pistons, Vaccumatics, Bulk fillers but I don't mind a CC either. I have large hands and dont like to post my pens. .M215 is the smallest pen that I can handle without posting. My little collection might give an insight. Lamy 2K steelPelikan M200 D(unused - too light), M215 Lozenge, M800, M1000Parker Sonnet Chinese laque (not often used, too light), Premier Deluxe Graduated ChisellingWaterman Carène Black sea GTPilot Custom 74 with FA nib (love the nib, hate the feed)Twsbi 540 and 7xx several with nib changed to custom ground Bocks (I grind my own nibs, if push comes to shove)Several beautiful large Ebonites and cellulites from unkown brands for which I have tuned the nibs, as the default ones were C&^p Cheers and would love to read your opinions on what would be a worthy addition (new and in-production pens)? -DOL
  11. Hello! Having watched sbrebrown's video "Why aren't you doing reviews?" I decided that I would try my hand at doing YouTube reviews of fountain pens! Here is my review of the Waterman Carène Black Sea Fountain Pen GT Medium Nib - if anyone has any suggestions/tips/tricks to help me improve my videos it would be really appreciated. A review of the Waterman Carène Black Sea Fountain Pen GT Medium Nib All the best, TheTechFish

    Waterman Carene Review

The full review with pictures can be found on my new blog https://pentheon.wordpress.com/. I would be eternally grateful if people could provide me with feedback and constructive criticism and follow my blog. I will be posting weekly reviews of pens, inks and papers, next week is a review of Diamine Presidential Blue. Many thanks. Introduction The Waterman Carene was my first proper fountain pen. I’d had Lamy Safaris in the past but this was the first one with a gold nib, first one I a got a converter for and the first one that was over £20! This pen not only introduced me to the world of the higher end pens but also the world of bottled inks, which I truly have come to appreciate. Design The Carene is a classic yet modern looking pen in the subdued “black sea” finish that I chose. There are certainly more extravagant ones available, the “Blue Obsession” model with the engraved gunmetal cap certainly springs to mind. According to Waterman, the Carene is modelled on a speedboat, presumably one that lives on the French Riviera. It’s a slim and relatively light pen, but is still heavy enough to feel solid in the hand, but then again I do prefer a heavier pen, I never really got on with the Safaris. Fit, quality and finish The cap is a pull cap, some disapprove of anything bar screw caps but I’ve never had a problem with it. The ‘click’ when the pen is capped is reassuringly solid. The rest of the pen follows this trend, there is a complete absence of rattling and it feels stable and sturdy in the hand. Filling mechanism The filling system is the standard cartridge and converter mechanism, indeed one can imagine how difficult it would have been for Waterman to fit a piston in such a slim pen. The standard long Waterman cartridges are very generous in capacity and the Waterman inks are varied and rather attractive. The Waterman converter is one of the better converters available, it has a generous capacity and is well put together. Nib The 14k inlaid nib is one of the standout features of the Carene. It is extremely smooth and the gold flows into the grip in a very attractive manner. The breather hole is on the underside of the grip, and this further contributes to the looks of the pen, the gold is smooth and uninterrupted. It’s unusual for an inlaid nib, but I’ve never got ink on my fingers. I chose the medium nib when I bought it, it is available in extra fine, fine, medium, broad and a stock stub. However I imagine finding the less ‘mainstream’ nibs might be quite difficult. The medium nib lays down a perfect line in my eyes, but do see the writing sample below. Value The black and gold version that I bought was just over £100 and at the moment (2 January 2015) that version is available for £75 on Amazon UK. The more ‘interesting’ finishes are a bit more, but the dearer ones are only about £122. I think that around £100 is a brilliant deal for a piece of this quality. Summary and conclusion The Waterman Carene is one of my favourite pens and I highly recommend it to everyone who doesn’t already own one. The nib is excellent, the whole pen is very well put together and the design is very attractive. Some people might not like the absence of a screw cap and a piston but for this price those can be glossed over.
  13. Evening all, I am getting two new bottles of ink (Diamine Apple Glory and the 150th Diamine Anniversary Blue Velvet) for Christmas so I only thought it right to get one new pen to put my favourite of the two in! (got the Rohrer and Klingner glass dip pen for the other ink!) There are four (relatively inexpensive) pens I am looking at to take up the next berth in my collection. The Pilot Vanishing Point in the Blue Carbonesque finish, the Lamy 2000 and a Waterman Carene in either the amber finish or the Blue Obsession colour. To give you an idea of my preferences I currently have a black Waterman Carene (love it), a MB 146 (love it), a Pelikan m800 (love it), an Edison Collier (wish it had a wider grip section) and a Waterman Expert II (don't love it, don't hate it either). All the four options are pretty much the same price in the UK and I was wondering what everyone thought would be the best option? The Lamy 2000 has been raved about ever since time began but the design seems a bit too minimalist for my taste. The VP has also been reviewed well but I'm a bit concerned about the small ink capacity in the converter, I'm a student and I (try to) take a lot of notes every day. And I love my Carene and both the blue and amber finishes are stunning but I am thinking I should branch out a bit more! And if anyone has got an recommendations for another option for £100-150 then it would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Chris
  14. Hi FPNers! I need your help. The trim and end of the body opposite to the cap of my Waterman Carene FP became tainted with small inkblots. I tried to clean them with a humid smooth cloth, but did not work. Do you know how to clean them causing no harm to beautiful finish of the pen? I look forward to reading from you. Marcelo

    Nipples

For those who enjoy such things, here is a shot showing the engagement of the converter to the Carenes feed nipple.
  16. The spare converter of my Waterman Carene fell on the floor and broke - I noticed it was made out of glass. I ordered a new one from a reputed online seller in Brazil, but it is made out of plastic. Can you tell me if it is original? Regards, Marcelo
  17. Almost 5 months ago I "designed" and had this pen case tailor-made for me: http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii33/mmmcosta/Watches/PenCase_zps27acfdc3.jpg Here's the story: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/245327-tailor-made-pen-case/ Earlier today the cartridge went empty - in the small side pocket, a spare was available for replacement. Best! Marcelo

    Carene Marine Amber Color

I have been looking at the Carene Marine Amber. And I would have to get it online. However, having seen the images of the pen, its not exactly clear whether the appearance of the marine amber is of "reddish" or of "brownish" Can anyone having that FP comment on its appearance? Secondly, I find two terms being ued - "marine amber" and "amber shimmer" - are they different colors / shades of Carene? thanks

    Which Color Carene Is This?

Looking at two ads on eBay for a Carene, one described as "velvet purple" and the other one as "velvet blue", the purple one looks more like blue to me and the blue one more like grey or even black. I know colors can look completely different in a different light and it can be hard to distinguish from photos, but which colors do you think they are?
  20. I wanted a single pen case to carry my fountain pens: Waterman Carène, Parker Premier and Caran d'Ache Leman. I found some interesting options, but had to import them. There was also another issue: I wanted a case that could also carry a spare cartridge. What I did was, based on this Lamy design, http://www.pensandleather.com/images/products/detail/lamy_dialog_pen_case_open.jpg asking for a tailor-made one at a good shoe shop at my hometown - these people know how to work with leather. They even put a kind of shammy inside, to keep the integrity of lacquer and external paiting. But what makes it really tailor-made, to my "specifications", was the little "pocket" to carry the cartridge: http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii33/mmmcosta/Watches/PenCase_zps27acfdc3.jpg Not that beautifully finished, but very functional. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-cool14.gif Regards, Marcelo
