  2. Hi all! I am contemplating getting a new fountain pen and cannot decide between a Sheaffer Valor or an Aurora Talentum Finesse (the Aurora Talentum is a little above my price range, and anyway I quite like the Finesse's slimmer look). Unfortunately the only review I could find of the Aurora is one that mentions the cap not being tight fitting enough, leading to the ink drying out by the next day. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Aurora, or could give any input as to which of the two I should go with? Thanks in advance!

    Aurora Ink Mixing

Anyone know of, or had any, long-term problems with an Aurora Blue:Aurora Black mix? There have been one or two much earlier posts about this but I believe that the ink composition of the two colours has altered in the meantime. Earlier comments are along the lines of, "...just turns to gel after a time..." I've been using such a mix for a few weeks now, by the way, and can't see any changes in the pen or the bottle it's in.
  4. Note: The review of each of the three pens was written with the pen being reviewed. Citations A Comparative Review Of Italic Nibs: Custom Versus Stock Stipula Facetted Etruria In Champagne Celluloid With An Italic Nib Comments? David
  5. I've been looking to purchase a functioning vintage Aurora 88, fine or medium nib. I would like the pen to be free of any major cosmetic blemishes. I wondered what I could expect to pay for one? I do like the ones with a Nikargenta cap, but a regular cap would do. Thank you.
  6. Hi everyone. This will be my first post in here. I am looking for help regarding my Aurora Ypsilon Satin (photo is attached in this post). This is my first fountain pen. I've had this since 2007. Not so long ago, uncapped for a second, it rolled off my desk and broke! The cap and nib are okay. The feed is intact. But the nib's section is badly damaged where the threading has disappeared. The threading is left inside the barrel! My initial idea for damage control was to apply Mighty Bond. However, this did not work at all. Please let me know if anybody here knows how to fix something like this? Are there any home remedies you can suggest? If not, would you please recommend the best action for this? Thank you! .
  7. Which nib of yours is the one to which all comparisons are made? What is it about this nib that makes this "The nib to rule them all"? Mine is the factory stub on an Aurora 88. Absolutely perfect! Perfect ink flow, perfect line variation, perfectly balanced, perfect feedback. I in fact use this as my standard description of what I want when customising.
  8. I've just ordered an Aurora Optima Nero Perla (cracked ice) color fountain pen. What I want to know is "Auroloide" plastic resin or celluoid? Thanks.
  9. Any one know about this pen? It has a "Italia" cap and a silver clip. There is no serial number. See pice below. http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x181/goutzchien/Aurora%2075th%20Anniversary/DSC00861_zps04054ea0.jpg http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x181/goutzchien/Aurora%2075th%20Anniversary/DSC00862_zpsefd2920e.jpg http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x181/goutzchien/Aurora%2075th%20Anniversary/DSC00864_zps8c7d6e82.jpg http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x181/goutzchien/Aurora%2075th%20Anniversary/DSC00866_zps7ff6be2e.jpg
  10. While looking for a daily notebook the first thing on my mind was the classical Aurora linen covered notebook. It's quite often seen here in Belgium but does not get that much attention on this forum. Is it something typical of my country? The paper quality will do for a daily notebook and the firmness does add value when carrying it arround. In my experience it is a iconic notebook that is fountainpen friendly. Is anybody else using it? Or perhaps just avoiding this notebook?

My Blacks - You Know I Love Them!

I have often commented about black inks in general but though it was time for a little comparison of the ones I actually own. Also, I've started using the Pelikan 4001 again and still quite enjoy it, I'm ashamed to say. However, the recent post on here about Aurora v Pelikan made me try the Aurora one out and I'm impressed. Along with the Aurora Blue, their Black is great in my Moleskines - I use F or EF/XF nibs generally - and they both make a nice change from my customary use of 'The Master' - Pelikan 4001 Blue Black. So here are my inks. All written on my usual Rhodia 80gsm pad using Lamy Safari pens, dipped, amd M nibs. The following soak tests are on the usual pads of (probably) 80 or 90gsm paper but the quality isn't very good. The 'wet' ones were soaked for 30 minutes or so and then given a final rinse before drying. I'm impressed with the Aurora and always knew that the Pelikan was going to be OK. Skrip has a good outcome too and the Namiki is pretty well-known for this quality. Lastly no real surprises from the Waterman and Parker. I shall await any comments with interest!
  12. I'm looking at the Aurora Limited Edition Dante's Inferno. It is an absolutely gorgeous pen, at least to my eyes. The black lacquer and rose gold accents are magnificent. But this will be the most I've spent on a pen and I want a pen that is useable, not just a collectable to be admired and never touched. So, I guess my main questions are: Has anyone got any experience with Aurora pens? Has anyone got any experience with this pen? What are your experiences with actually using limited editions in general? Thanks,
  13. Hello, I have a beautiful Aurora International 98. I used to refill it using an used Aurora cartridge. It works, but I'm not sure I would offer a gift with a syringe, or even sell it. By some serendipity, my local fountain pen shop had an Aurora converter that is supposed to work for this model. I tried it, and it seemed to work. But as soon as I tried to fill the pen up, it became obvious that the converter was a bit looser than with the cartridge. In fact, the section fell into the ink pot. On the second try, I could make it suck ink. It worked for a while, but it became obvious that the ink was leaking from where the converter made contact with the nipple. So I flushed the pen and the converter, disassembling the converter to make sure it was OK. So here is my question: would it be possible to put a bit of silicon grease to "seal" the converter around the nipple? I know that 13$ is not a big deal, but my first motivation to dive into the universe of fountain pens was to stop wasting plastic and start taking care of my stuff. I am willing to try about any solution, as long as someone, somewhere, is willing to help me out by sharing his or her experience. Sorry if my question has already been answered before, but I did try to scratch my own itch, but could not find anything after an hour of search and reading previous thread. Thanks, w

  16. So my dad has this awesome collection of Aurora Pens and wants to sell them. They are all in mint condition, never touched, never used. He basically had them locked away in a closet for a long time, never even put them on display. Below I have attached a picture of one of them, which is very similar to the others. Neither him nor I know anything about these pens so I was hopping someone could help me out with an estimate of how much they're worth. I'm planning on posting them in the classifieds section. So any information would be great. Thanks

    Opening Aurora 88 Piston

Any idea of how to open an Aurora 88 piston to apply some silicone grease? After recently managing this with an M800, I want to know how to do this with the less well known Aurora 88..
  18. What kind of service do Bock provide? It seems like so many pen makers use Bock nibs, yet so many reviews also comment of the various properties of company specific features like the "conway stewart", or "Visconti" feel of a nib. Surely, nib material aside; Bock made nibs must be fairly similar to each other?! That is unless of course, that Bock provide some kind of consulting process in which the pen maker brings what they want, which Bock then go on to manufacture. Any thoughts or insights?
  19. So I've decided to buy myself a birthday pen, but my dilemma is choosing what pen. So I've decided to enlist the help of the FPN board members and base my decision upon your recommendation's. I've narrowed it down between 10 pens of which to choose from. They are as follows; Pilot Custom 742 SFM Black ~$163 Sailor 1911 Full Size Black w/ Silver trim FM ~$163 Platinum 3776 Chatres Blue F ~$84 *Delta Dolce Vita PISTON F ~$350* Franklin Christoph Model 19 '1901' Kings Gold Bands .9mm MM Custom stub ~$195 Aurora 88 Large Silver trim Fine ~$350 **OMAS Arte Italiana Noir Milord (331 made in each size) ~$395** *Stipula Etruria Rainbow Blue w/ T-Flex nib ~$230* Any combination of Edison pen e.g Huron Grande or Pearl in Lucite or Cobalt Flake or Molten Ores or ....... Franklin Christoph Model 66 Stabillis .9mm MM custom Stub ~$169.50 I just can't decide between these pens! I want them all! But alas I cannot afford that. In terms of pens I already own, I have an Edison Collier in silver marble, a Sailor 1911m clear and gold (These two happen to be my favorite pens, despite the massive size differences),Pelikan M600 EF in blue, a Montblanc 144 Black/Gold M-B, a TWSBI Diamond 540 EF, and a TWSBI Vac 700 EF in blue. I think I have plenty of blue and EF pens for now, and my goal up to now is to diversify my pen collection. I really like the OMAS. I really wanted an Italian pen, so the Delta, OMAS, and Stipula seem to be the most likely options for now. FYI: It will be my 15th birthday, so I want to make it a good and memorable pen. (* indicates pens I will most likely purchase at the time of this post, subject to change) EDIT: I should mention that the purchase date is later in August
  20. ---------- Verbose introduction; hang on to your britches! ---------- I recently bought a used Aurora Hastil (red body, yellow gold nib) on ebay for a very reasonable price. This is my first gold nib fountain pen and first retro pen. The entire pen has a wonderful feel to it! The body seems to be made of a golden metal with a red plastic coating that has a remarkably luxurious feel. The cap clicks to the rest of the body with a reassuring CLICK, and glides onto the rear of the body when posted. The Aurora designers included soft plastic standoffs to prevents scratching when the cap is posted. Overall, the pen is incredibly light and thin, but has a very clean look to it. Once I figure out how to post photos, I will do that. The clip is wonderful as well. It is obviously designed to sit in a shirt pocket, because the clip nearly rests on the cap, indicating that it is intended to clip to a thin fabric. Pants are out of the question, so I think a dress shirt pocket would make sense. As an aside; for those of you who have tried wearing fountain pens in your dress shirt pocket, several bad things may happen (and have for me): 1. If the pen is heavy (think TWSBI), your shirt pocket sags, and your shirt looks terrible. 2. The clip does not have the necessary contact surface area with the shirt fabric, and you simply bending over results in a few curse words as the pen slides out and *SMACK*s into the ground. So, I placed the pen in my dress shirt pocket, and did a hand stand. Done. No sliding, and the pen seems happy to be there with me, fighting gravity. The section, feed, and nib look remarkably well made. The section is stamped with a serial number, the feed doesn't have lines left from the molding manufacturing process, and the nib looks very simplistic but nice. On the side it is stamped with '14 kt'. -------- end of verbose introduction; on to business! ---------- When I unscrewed the pen for the first time, I saw what I had expected, but hoped wouldn't be the case. The pen was still inked; if you can call it that.. The ink cartridge did have ink in it at one point in its history, but the ink had dried, leaving a crusty residue in the cartridge. This of course is not a big deal, what is.. is the feed. I immediately started cleaning out the feed with a bulb syringe (as per Stephen's tutorials). I filled the bulb syringe with room temperature water, and streamed it through the feed from the section side. As expected, a constant flow of dark black ink was expelled from the tip of the pen. I did this with probably 5 or so syringes until I got a clear stream. I dried the nib off and let it set for the next day. The next day, I pushed through another bulb syringe, and sure enough... more dark color. This time a deep violet color. I have repeated this process for 3 days now, and I'm somewhat irritated at this slow process. I took studiohead's recommendation and suspended the section/nib/feed under water. I got the following really cool results: Does anyone know how to take an Aurora Hastil apart? I would like to give the feed a good scrubbing. Does anyone know of a faster way of cleaning the feed?

    Aurora Style Resin

Aurora Style Resin Introduction The Aurora Style Resin is the Italian pen maker's entry-level fountain pen. Cap, barrel, and section are all plastic resin. Color choices include black, blue, and red or, rather, "paprika," the color of my pen; the section, however, is black. Trim is chrome. The smallish nib is steel and can be had in EF, F, M, and B. The Aurora Style is a c/c filler, with a slip cap. Although the Aurora Style has been on the market for several years, this appears to be the first full review of the "Resin" model. Earlier reviewers, faustulus in 2007 and rollerboy in 2009, reviewed different "flavors" of the Aurora Style: one flavor features a lacquered or plated barrel and cap, another a chrome cap -- with corresponding increased list prices. The "plated" model lists for $175; a "bronze" model for $150; a model with chrome cap lists for $120. The Aurora Style Resin, the subject of this review, lists for a true (that is, sub-$100) entry-level price of $90. Street prices will be lower. The Style Resin can be purchased new at the usual online outlets for approximately $70. Apart from the aesthetics of the pen -- more on these in a moment -- the earlier reviews aptly describe the virtues of the Aurora Style brand: the nib is slightly springy, the flow is consistent and a bit on the wet side; "pleasant feedback that gives a good feeling of control ... a nib that delivers the fountain pen experience," wrote rollerboy. Packaging, Appearance, and Design The pen ships in a cardboard outer box containing a clamshell-type leatherette box. Inside is a warranty pamphlet, the pen, an ink cartridge, and a converter (fitted inside the pen). Nothing fancy, but it's a good-looking gift package. Lovely cigarish shape. The cap and the clip curve gently towards the top of the oblique-cut top. On the top is an oval-shaped chrome plate, blank. Presumably Aurora eschewed gilting its trademark on the plate to leave space for engraving. No bling; understated elegance. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5463/9329214184_c24b68bb8f.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5482/9326430543_7516d57485.jpg Construction and Quality It's an Aurora. Everything is well put together. No manufacturing marks or imperfections noted. The slip cap closes with a satisfying click. Just enough pull is required to remove the cap that it is not likely to open inadvertently in one's purse or pocket. The clip slips easily in a shirt pocket and holds tightly. It is not stiff; there is a bit of side-to-side play in the clip. Out of the box, however, the nib of my pen had rotated slightly out of alignment with the feed. It's simple to move it back into place with one's fingers. (I did not try to pull the nib or feed from the section.) The tines of my medium nib were aligned and did not require readjustment or smoothing. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2809/9326418605_0bb3f5a43f.jpg Weight and Dimensions Pen dimensions: Approximately 5.4 inches (13.8 cm) long when capped, 5.7 inches (14.6 cm) long from tip of nib to end of cap when cap is posted on back of pen, and 0.55 inches (14 mm) in diameter at widest point on cap. Pen weight: I don't have a scales but one retailer gives the weight as 0.8 ounces. Lacking the chrome cap, the Style Resin is almost certainly lighter than the other Style models. In use, I did not find the Style Resin too light; indeed, it felt substantial in my hand. Posted, the pen is well-balanced, the center of gravity located precisely at the cap band. Comparisons (Aurora Style Resin, Aurora 88, and Montblanc 146) http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2864/9329216312_9346fa649a.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5462/9329212158_d237333b1f.jpg Nib and Performance My medium nib is a superb performer. As noted by the earlier reviewers, flow is slightly wet and consistent, nib has a bit of spring and gives feedback. Although the plastic resin is glossy, it was not slick and the pen did not slide in my hand. In fact, it was warm to the touch and adhered to my fingers. Not sweaty or oily. Because of its all-plastic construction, fingerprints will not mar the appearance of the pen. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5443/9329212970_01caf5a930.jpg Filling System As noted, the Aurora Style Resin is a c/c filler. Standard international cartridges and converters will not fit. It has been reported here on FPN and elsewhere that the Aurora Style accepts Parker cartridges and piston "twist" converter; and one FPNer noted that a Lamy Z24 converter, which fits the Safari, also fit his Aurora Style. Value As rollerboy wrote, "Bottom line: A model of pen that doesn't seem to get the love it deserves around here on FPN. Aurora calls it one of their 'everyday' pens and that fits. A modestly sized and modestly priced pen, timelessly contemporary in appearance, with a nib that delivers the fountain pen experience. I *like* it." I do too.
  22. I am looking for a bottled ink for fountain pens that is close in color and qualities to Pentel EnerGel black. I know those pens use a gel hybrid ink, so I am looking for something close. They are my favorite ballpoints, maybe tied with V5 Precise RT. I will be using the ink in a Lamy Al-Star EF. I have Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin, but there is no sheen, and it has a wierd green tone to it. I want pure black. I do not want India ink or carbon or pigmented inks. So which ink is closest to what I am looking for? Pure black is a must (no color undertones, not even gray), some sheen would be a bonus. I do not see anything in Noodler's line like that except maybe X-Feather, which I have had no experience with. I believe Bad Black Moccasin and X Feather are supposed to be the darkest Noodler's inks, despite HoD, so I would venture to guess that Noodler's is out. I have not tried Infinite Black by PR. I have heard good things, but not necessarily about its color. Does anyone have experience with Aurora Black or J Herban Perle Noire? Do they have these wanted qualities? Do you have any other ink suggestions? Thanks ahead for the input.
  23. Images are attached due to size, specifically I am looking at the all black Conklin, the Dolcevita and the Aurora. I believe that the Conklin is a Symetrik, and the Aurora is an 88, but I'm just not quite sure. The seller seems to have very limited information outside of brand, so any help is appreciated. Also, some guestimations on price point would be very helpful. Asking price is 825 for those three, 200 for the Conklin, 150 for the Aurora, and 425 for the Dolce.....the dolce especially seems quite high.
  24. OK. I've wavered for a terribly long time on buying the Pilot Custom 823, and I've no idea why - I keep getting interested in other pens, and right now the Aurora Talentum in rubberized black looks tasty. I'd be buying either from John Mottishaw. I know the Pilot Custom 823 is the better value but for some reason I've hesitated on pulling the trigger for about a year now. My interest would be in an M Pilot nib and F or M Talentum nibs, or even a Stub/CI grind in that vicinity. The Aurora feedback I've read about sounds interesting. I guess I'm looking for any comments or feedback anyone might have about these pens. I'd appreciate anything thrown my way; thank you.
  25. I have been obsessed with the idea of buying an Aurora Talentum Chrome Capped Fountain Pen in black Resin: http://www.iguanasell.co.uk/collections/aurora-pens-elite-subcat-talentum-sub2cat/products/aurora-talentum-fountain-pen-black-resin-chrome-cap-d11c However, Iguanasell is a Company I have never heard of before, and I would like to ask you, my fellow stylophiles, if this is a well reputed dealer. Grateful for any answers, Claudius
