2nd Round of Testing with Fine nib

Bryan

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

As you may or may not know, I conducted a water test on some inks awhile back. I use a very broad italic dip nib to apply the ink to paper. Here was that testhttps://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...?showtopic=3946

For this next test, I have added many inks (Though I have also sold some inks so they won't be included in this test) and have use a fine dip nib for applying the ink. I hope this will give us a better Idea of how ink will hold up while using a fine nib is a water test.

Here is the test sheet: For a larger full size image click here.

I will conduct two tests: 1. I will "spill" water on the sheet and see how the inks hold up. 2. I will completely submerge the page in water over night.

I'll post more images as I go on with this test.

Enjoy,

Bryan

OK,

I used a seringe and applied a small amount of water to all the ink samples. I then used some tissue and dabbed the paper dry. (Just like I'd do if I had really spilled water on my writing.

Here is the result of Test #1. For a larger image click here.

Brilliant...thanks for this. Especially relevant for me as I've become a Fine user.

The usual suspects seem to be holding up but I'll be even more interested in seeing the after submission results. ^_^

Jiminy Christmas! Could it get any more obvious! Noodler's rocks. Now, if Aircorp really was blue-black, then I think it might be my new permanent ink. I love Noodler's black, but black is too boring for me. I keep it in one pen always for addressing snails, but a permanent blue-black could become my everyday ink. Anyone want to develop a custom Legal Lapis/Bulletproof black mix for me?

Thanks Bryan for the great work.

Thanks for the test, and the terrific selection of inks. I've found the comparison of the colors, as well as the results, very interesting.

Thanks so much for sharing this, Byran. It made me really glad to see this AFTER I had ordered Noodler's Legal Lapis and Black - whew! B)

@ Bryan Great and very usefull job, thanks!

@ nmb Look for the Noodler's-Swisher 'Thahitian Pearl'-Mix at Swisher website. That is a Blue-Black kind, where at least the black part is bulletproof black (I have yet to try it myself).

Thanks for the great test report! :)

Just a note. I think the midnight blue Swisher-Noodler is different from the regular Noodler midnight-blue, with the later being supposedly far more water resistant.

PS: I may just be confused about which Noodlers dark blue is waterproof. It may just be the blue-black and not the midnight blue.

I think they are somewhat different, but having just recently bought a bottle of Noodler's midnight blue, I scribbled something and dunked the paper in water. While a legible trace still remained, most of the ink washed off, proving me dead wrong on the water resistance  it is nothing like air-corp blue black, of which I also bought a bottle that I haven't opened yet  I must have confused midnight blue with blue-black.

Excellent investigative work there, Bryan :)

A picture is worth a thousand words, so thanks for posting the side-by-side images, too.

I second that! Great water test! It is very usefull for snail adressing! Thanks

It's already been done. There is also Noodler's Blue/Black ink which is a mixture of a blue ink and Noodler's Black. When wet the black remains no matter what. And as someone else mentioned, Swisher's Swishmix Tahitian Pearl is also what looks to me like a black/blue, as opposed to a blue/black, ink with Noodler's Black as the waterproof component.

Additionally, I've found that mixing any number of blue inks with Noodler Black produces a nice blue/black ink. I do it in the ratio of 8:2 = blue:Noodler's Black. And by doing it this way you can fine tune the mixture with just the shade of blue you want mixed with it. Lot's of options.

Thanks Bryan for the great work.

I second, or third, or whatever the number is now, that!

On a sacred quest for the perfect blue ink mixture!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
