Great pics of a nice pen. Thanks for sharing. Any chance of a full review soon? TIA

Those are stunning pics Kelvin. Did you take those yourself? Beautiful pen, classic design.

Hi Kelvin,

Some more drool-evoking pictures, wow1 Thanks again for sharing!

Can you tell us maybe a little more about the techniques and gear (pun intended ) used?

TIA, warm regards, Wim

Thank you for the kind comments everyone :)

southpaw, will do as soon as I run in the pen and tried more pens to make a proper comparison.

Leslie, yes I did. I'm also an avid photog so I cannot resist taking photos of things of beauty :)

wimg, for gear, I use an EOS300D. The lense for this case is the trusty Tamron SP90mm f2.8 Macro Di. I use a 2 flash setup - the 580EX on the left (with cable attachment from hotshoe) and the 420EX on wireless slave on the right. The backdrop used was bought from an art shop.

For my mini studio, I made 2 DIY softboxes... just cartons and tracing paper for the 2 flashes.

Wow, that sounds like quite the setup. Any chance you could take a picture of it? I'd love to see how what the whole setup looks like.

Again, beautiful pictures.

Love that set-up, Kelvin! :P Looks similar to jury rigged set ups that I used to come up with back east in the U.S.

Too many think that one must run out and buy everything to do photography like that. Experimentation and available material will produce photos every bit the equal of the slick commercial set-ups. B)

Nice work!

Thanks Roger :)

This setup has limitations but I feel that one can produce good results if one knew how to work around these limitations. Here's an example of a toy photo I took with this exact setup...

Btw, since that last time I took a shot of that setup, I've laced the insides of the cartons with aluminium foil.

Nice work!

I've done something similar using a cone of white paper around the item with a halogen light and the flash on the outside. Good to see that I'm on the right direction to get good photographs

K H, cute avatar :)

if you're using halogens, you may be able to get even lighting but you may find a bit of trouble if you want to use directional light to emphasize textures imho :) looking forward to see your work.

I think I have a Churchill in the photos section I did with an early version of the light cone.

do u have a shot of your setup?

My setup consisted of 3 pieces of paper taped together to form a cylinder and then a halogen lamp net to it. very basic but a good place to start from.

Hi lanatir,

Just wanted to thank you for sharing that, including the pics of your setup. I am busy building something similar (once the mess from the flooding is sorted out), be it with a couple of daylight lamps, but it is always good to hear I am going in the right direction!

Warm regards, Wim

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
