Noodler's Upper Ganges Blue

Recommended Posts

Just got my bottle of Upper Ganges Blue and here's a scan. It's a nice light, true blue, but not too pale. I like it and will probably use it. Have to figure out which pen I'll load it in.

Sorry for the bad handwriting but I'm in a hurry. I have to go to work...!

Your pens write wet enough for Luxury Blue to give a nice dark blue appearance. I don't think my pens write unduly dryly (with other inks) but Luxury Blue comes out looking pale and chalky when I use it (and others have said the same).

In a pen where Luxury Blue looks pale and chalky, how would Upper Ganges Blue look, Unfortunately, that's what I need to know. I'm really glad you put the Luxury Blue comparator in your scan. However, based on my results with it, it throws a huge yellow flag on the field.

Doug,

Thanks for the scan....The scan on my computer looks pretty close to the normal Noodler's Blue - it's getting to the point that there are subtle differences...Have you tried out Polar Blue yet?

Here's another quick scan of Upper Ganges and Luxury Blue together. Different pens, again, but this time each with swab. I'm surprised at how similar they are to each other. Disregard the first "Upper" in the writing. I picked up the wrong pen that had Legal Lapis in it...

Can you tell us what pens and nibs you're using for your scans? Thanks. I am pleased at the apparent lack of a chalky appearance. Lux Bl vs. Upp Ganges Reminds me of the variance between American Blue and Lk Placid Blue. - Michele

Very nice Doug. Thanks.

Hmmm... one more Blue to put on the list. :)

How can you tell when you're out of invisible ink?

Michele, for Upper Ganges Blue I am using a Sailor 1911M with fine nib. This is a "wet" writer. For Luxury Blue, I am using a Pelikan M605 with Richard Binder .5mm cursive italic. I lightly flossed this to be a "wet" writer also.

Both inks lack the eye popping vigor of Private Reserve American Blue or Lake Placid. But both Noodler's inks are waterproof which satisfies some kind of invisible compulsion of mine. Those who describe Luxury Blue as "chalky" will probably find Upper Ganges Blue no less so. There is a very subtle "brightness" to Lux Blue that the scanner seems unable to capture.

I had a bottle of luxury blue, but I always found it a little dull. Your scans don't show that dullness. I want to order a bottle of Upper ganges because it didn't seem so dull. Maybe I got a bad bottle of LB?

Nah, luxury blue is lifeless, but it can be mixed with more brilliant blues to yield nice (yet waterproof) colors:

Nice, bright mixes. I like PR blues but need the permanence of the Noodler's bulletproof inks. Actually, I use Lux Blue as my letter writing ink, and with a wet writer on ecru off-white paper, it's quite a classic deep blue. But I'll try those mixes and see. Thanks!

Here's another quick scan of Upper Ganges and Luxury Blue together. ...

This illustrates my problem with all of these pretty blues, I can not tell the difference between the two hues. The difference is beyond my ability to discriminate colors.

Don't be hard on yourself, the difference is visible, on a descent monitor, at least... If not else, the Upper Ganges looks more "true blue", while the Luxury Blue looks like it has a bit of black, or purple to it...

I've found that Luxury Blue and the Swisher waterproof blues look a lot brighter on cheap HP All in One paper and some other cheap HP paper, but dull on everything else I've tried. I went and had a couple notebooks made from these cheap papers just so I could use these blues.

I can't see a difference in the swabs, only in use from the pen can I see the difference. Lux Blue looks ever so slightly darker.

But then, if that pen had black in it before.......or another dark color.....

How does Upper Ganges compares to American Blue ?

Anyone has a scan of them both?

Thanx..., The Legend

Keep writing.

Keep doing it and doing it.

Even in the moments when it's so hurtful to think about writing.

It's the same kind of "true blue," but American Blue is a deeply saturated, eye-popping blue, while Upper Ganges Blue is much paler. UGB shades very nicely if you have the right (wet) nib and paper. UGB is "bulletproof" and very permanent -- AB dissolves in the lightest of mists.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
