J. Herbin Café des Îles on Ivory Paper.

I read on Pendemonium's Ink Facts & Reviews that this color looks especially antique on ivory papers, so I tried it out on G. Lalo's ivory paper.

Café des Îles dries to have dark rims around the lines to create a rusty-effect. It reminds me of the burnt letters on the secret notes I used to write with lemon-juice!

Thanks for the great sample, Hana. Your handwriting is truly remarkable -- can I ask what kind of pen you used to get such incredible results?

Incredible. It makes me want the paper, the ink, and another flex-nib pen...

You're amazing!

Just gorgeous, nicely done.

I have a sample of this coming, although it's not going to be nearly so luscious with my very modest italic. ;)

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

Your writing (and the review) is to die for - simply gorgeous!

Yes !

Another confirmation that I need this ink ! And a flex nib ! (though not as flexy as yours is).

I used Nakaya's extra fine soft flex.

I'm baffled by all these nice comments! O_O Thank you all so much!

Thanks, Hana. I think I need (yes, need) one of those nibs.

Very nice. It's too red for me on white paper but stunning on that ivory paper. And yes, the comments re: your writing sample are well-deserved.

Hi Hana,

Very beautiful writing sample! Thank you very much for sharing!

KCat, I find it interesting you find it too red on white paper. I found it was a rather dry writing ink, and I adjusted the flow in one of my pens especially to use it with. That makes all the difference, I found: it really looks like coffee now when writing. Very lovely brown, IMO.

Could be I've just grown too fond of Diamine Sepia which is a golden brown. Anything else looks red to me. :)

Hmmm. Ivory paper: check. Cafe des Iles: check. I'll have to try this out! Looks beautiful, and I'll just add to the chorus and say that your writing is loverly.

I've noticed this, too! I used to really like Waterman Havana. Now... eh. It looks like red mud to me. :P

I feel the same way, with at least half a bottle of Havanna sitting in the drawer gathering dust. Levenger Cocoa ruined me to reddish brown inks!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
