Noodlers Periwinkle (bulletproof)

Recommended Posts

I bought this ink a fortnight ago and have been trying it in a few different pens using the same paper mostly. Of the three variables of pen, ink, and paper, I wanted to keep the ink and the paper as constants. The paper I used is a Cambridge Exectutive notepad 90 gsm and is smooth (probably only available in the UK) - I use it for my journal.

I cannot remembering ever seeing a periwinkle mollusc so I can't vouch for the colour. To me it appears to be a light blue/mauve and has a chalky appearance.

Pens tried:

  • Lamy Safari OB nib - difficulty with flow, to the extent I thought the ink was at fault and gave up on this combination after two weeks as the flow got worse and worse.
  • Bexley Simplicity B nib - this is a better quality of pen and a wet writer so I was happy with the flow for a little while. I changed to brown ink simply because the colour of the ink clashed with the color of the pen (bronze with gold trim). However I would be happy to use this ink in this pen again if it doesn't hurt my eyes too much.
  • Bic X-pen Select - cheapo pen which i had doctored with a razor blade to improve the flow but either I didn't do it right or the pen as a whole could not handle the ink as the flow became drier and drier.
  • Lamy Al-Star OB nib - hooray it's early days but the flow seems quite wet and it allows more blueness to come through rather than the mauve tones
.

Overall the ink certainly seems to be quick-drying so it doesn't smear after a few seconds. I have tried using a disposible highlighter pen over some of the writing and it was most satisfactory - yup definitely bulletproof.

Hi Scratchy:) like this color..would you please update your review after you've used this ink for a while longer? will be curious to see if it's more the ink or the pens.

Thanks,

p2p

'Sure no problem, I will be using the ink in the Lamy Al-Star for another week or so, so I shall report on that.

I think he is asking if the flow is smooth or will the pen write "dry" or scratchy.

Scribere est agere.

To write is to act.

Lutek in what fountain pens would you be planning to using this ink?

some pens tend to be dry writers, some wet..

from what Scratchy has posted so far, this May not be the ink for you if you have a pen which is a dry writer.

which is why I asked her to share more about her experience with the ink as time goes by.

I see you're new-welcome:)

Thanks for the review. As soon as I learned about Noodler's Periwinkle I ordered it. It's in the mail and I eagerly anticipate its arrival. I'm glad you mention it works well with Bexley's Simplicity. I've had one for a few days now and am really, really, liking it.

  • 4 weeks later...

IMO this ink writes dry, even though the colour is pretty.

I went away on holiday and left the Al-Star OB nib containing Periwinkle lying horizontally on my desk. When I returned after 12 days, it wouldn't start. I then held the nib under running water, after which I was able to write a few lines. However it again stopped flowing. So I flushed the pen and converter, shook the bottle of ink and refilled and it is again writing okay, if a bit pale from water residue in the feed.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
