Noodler's Coral Sea

all my hues

Recommended Posts

Let's just get one thing out of the way right now:

I FREAKIN' LOVE THIS INK.

Now then. Here, as promised, is the review for this fine ink which sadly only has one review so far :( It deserves more! And so, here is my humble, graffitied contribution--

Did you think I was kidding when I said "graffitied"? Hah. You're cute.

Pretty ink and a fun review. I wish I had your "graffiti" skills.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

Oh nice! That's a lovely color. Looks similar to Noodler's Squetegue (or however its spelled), but a bit nicer in color and perhaps not so dark. I may have to get a bottle of this!

I think that Squetegue (or yeah, however the **** it's spelt :P) is more greenish, whereas this is more bluish. I would love to see a scan of this next to Legal Lapis.

I use my Coral Sea in a Hero 329 new style with its EF nib. Because EF nibs don't lay down much ink, it doesn't bleed or feather on even poor quality paper.

I'm ordering it now. Thanks for the review. Pendamonium.com.au says they are getting restocked the end of next week so I am waiting patiently for my order.

Attention Noodlers;

There are at least a few ink connoisseurs in the United States who are just itching to relieve your supply shelves of such a beautiful ink. A U.S. or even a global release would certainly not be an imprudent move on your part!

It would be wonderful if you posted a scan comparing all these inks! I've had my eye on Ellis Island and/or Aircorp, and would love to see a comparison.

  • 5 weeks later...

Well, my bottle of Coral Sea Blue arrived while I was away in Salt Lake City this week. I'm giving it a try with a cursive italic nib tonight with Herbie Hancock's River CD playing in the background.

Holy smokes, I've never seen nib creep like this before ! The entire upper surface of the nib is lightly coated, and the separation of the tines has a distinctly dark area propagating outward to the edges. I had tested Gulfstream Blue, another "contract" ink that preceded the "bulletproof" line of inks and saw nothing like this. Nib creep's pretty definitely an acquired taste, I've decided.

The flow of the ink, though, has been quite good, likely also explaining the extensive nib creep. I'm seeing some moderate shading, but not as much as our colleague "Hues" seemed to get. OTOH, here at altitude with low humidity (14% tonight according to the online info), the drying time's been quite acceptable. I'm not seeing the smearing effects, either.

The colour's interesting, but then, that was the point of the OP's review. This too, may be an acquired taste. I've never used Pride of the Commons or Legal Lapis or Tahitian Pearl, so it's hard for me to compare with other Noodler's inks of "off-blue" shades. I can certainly see how Noodler's arrived at the name, and it's a distinctive colour, without doubt. Is it the colour for me to write with in daily use ? I'm frankly unsure as yet.

Welladay, I guess that I just have to systematically try this with various papers, and also look at it in daylight as well as incandescent light to draw better conclusions. More writing's in store tonight, although I lack the whimsy of All My Hues with her drawings and other tests...

Looks like a beautiful color that I'd love to try. To my eyes on my monitor this ink looks very much like Iroshizuku Ku-jaku (peacock blue). Wish someone who had both could do a side by side before I buy some Coral.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
