VP Ink Capacity

Hey folks,

 

I was at the Atlanta show this weekend and had a dark green VP ground to a .7mm cursive italic by Richard Binder. This pen's nib is a pinnacle of human civilization. However, the converter seems to run dry within a few pages. This is a thirsty nib, but not THAT thirsty. This converter seems to hold less than a short international cartridge.

 

Does anyone find that refilling the carts dramatically increase the ink capacity?

The Pilot converter CON-20 capacity is about ~0.8ml, which is about the same as a short international cartridge. The Pilot cartridges hold about 1.1ml.

 

This is why I never use converters - these volumes are similar across the board (the Sailor converter holds a tiny 0.6ml). I syringe-refill everything. :)

First, I began to use the Sailor converter, when I was still pure and innocent :D, but as I had to refill it everyday, I decided to swith to cartridges and syringe :) It's a bit better. The same goes for the VP imho. I'm still waiting for my VP to arrive (it is currently kept by the french customs -_-) but I have already bought a set of pilot cartridges ready to be refilled whenever I need it :)

That Richard Binder magic is really amazing, isn't it?

 

My daily work pen is a VP with one of Richard's 0.9 mm ItaliFine nibs - great line variation and smooth relaible lines.

 

I abandoned the tiny little converter that comes with the Vanish Point - it holds less than a day's worth of ink, and hunting down an ink bottle and genuflecting through the refilling ritual just is not a welcome part of my hectic day.

 

The cartridges have more ink, and of course the cartridges are quicker and easier to exchange on the run (unless of course you are refilling the spent cartridges with a syringe).

 

The Blue cartridge pack of 12 is Pilot UPC #69101, Item #IC-100.

 

The Black cartridge pack of 12 is Pilot UPC #69100, Item #IC-100.

 

Have fun, burn some ink.

I got 1.0 ml in the Decimo Capless I had, using the Con-20 converter. You just have to pump the converter a few times.

Like Laura and Shinichiro, I refill carts. Not difficult and much more mileage per fill. It's true you can get more ink in the converter with some patience, and a deep ink bottle. But I still couldn't get the volume Dillo got. I also feel that flow is much better with the carts. The design of the Pilot converter tends to cause ink to get "caught" near the plunger if the converter isn't full (and you've stored it upright as is intended.) At least in my experience. My VPs always go in my purse with me in a pen sleeve so they are always upright and ink always "falls" to the opposite end of the reservoir. With the cartridge, this doesn't matter, ink easily travels the walls of the soft material. with the plastic converter, air bubble traps the ink away from the nib.

I recently read in a Japanese website that Pilot recommends using cartridges rather than converters in their C/C pens. The ridges on the inside wall of the cart is the "secret" for better ink flow, according to them ;)

 

Ink-sticking phenomenon in Pilot converters is notorious in Japan, too and it's called "tana-tsuri" (roughly translates "suspended on a shelf" :D)
