Quo Vadis Minister review

Well, this review has been rather a long time in coming, but here it is nonetheless. Around the end of last year I signed up to review Quo Vadis's planners, and opted to receive the Minister, which is a large-by-my-standards (16x24cm) planner - much too large to pocket, but it fits pretty well in my laptop bag, which is where it's been living. I haven't used it quite as much as I'd like, but I think this is largely due to my having gotten used to writing little notes to myself and leaving them all over my desk - writing them in the planner would probably be a lot more helpful.

For scale - the Minister with my pocket-sized Habana notebook and my VP:

First impressions are pretty good, though I wouldn't mind a slightly-thicker cover (the Minister has the same cover as my pocket Habana, in the same thickness, though it's not quite as sturdy due to having a much-larger surface area). The planner has an elastic to hold it closed, which I always appreciate, as well as an expandable pocket at the back. In lieu of the ribbon you might expect as a place-marker under these circumstances, though, the Minister's pages have perforated lower-right corners, a system that works well enough, though I usually seem to forget to tear the corners off.

The front section has an "Anno-Planning" year-at-a-glance section for scheduling holidays, etc.

Probably of the most interest to me and to most others here: how does the paper take fountain pen ink? Well, it's Clairfontaine paper and takes it quite well, though I've been on the verge of bleed-through in a few places; admittedly, I was also using a very wet-writing 0.6mm VP stub in it for a while. In my experience, fountain pen ink also takes a while to dry on this paper, which is a little bit inconvenient when trying to jot down a quick note. It's similar paper to that in my Habana, though with the Habana I don't write on both sides of the same page so bleed isn't so much of an issue.

The layout of the week spread is convenient enough, though I find I tend to use the weekly "See - Do" and "Notes" sections a lot and the others not quite so much. Sunday being at the bottom and oriented left-to-right, unlike the other days, throws me off a bit too. The daily "priority" box is a nice touch.

In any case, I think it's a pretty good planner and will be continuing to use it and hopefully wean myself off the scattered-notes method of organization. I wouldn't mind something a bit smaller on the whole, and I think that's another factor that keeps me from using it more - the size doesn't really lend itself that well to whipping it out and jotting something down quickly. I use my little pocketable Habana all the time, so maybe I'll replace it in my pocket with one of Exaclair's smaller planners for 2010.

I'd like to thank Karen Doherty from Exaclair for giving me the opportunity to review this planner. Thanks, Karen!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
