Estie J-Bar

Recommended Posts

Can someone (Brian, you listening? ;) ) tell me what kind of j-bar goes in the standard double jewel J? I picked up a rather nice blue J Estie at a flea market today. Original sac is prestine, but the j-bar was broken at the top of the curve. So I swung by http://www.fountainpenhospital.com/ to price a new bar, but I'm not sure which size it takes, or how to put it in for that matter. Help!

Thanks :D

I'll post pics once it's fixed and polished.

I got one from Woodbin, and they told me 54 mm. is the right size. I had no problem fitting it in; you just need to be sure to get the bar directly under the lever. Then press it in with something long and narrow.

I see Woodbin is cheaper too, thanks.

I just bought an Estie J Double Jewel and cleaned it up. My question is, how far inside the barrel should the J-bar and the plastic support it mounts on go in? Or, when you pull the lever, at what angle should the lever be for it to reach the stop on the J-bar?

Gregoron,

If by the plastic support you are referring to is the sac support (my name--Brian is there an official name?) it should have a small tab on the bottom that locks it into the spring groove that secures the lever. Once that is fixed in place, push your J-bar in to the back of the support.

In pens without the sac support, there should be a small plastic or rubber spacer that goes in the barrel first, the J-bar rests against this as the stop.

Thanks Todd. That's what I meant - the sac and spring support, which is removeable. I locked the J-bar on the support's groove. But, how far down the pen barrel should I slide that support?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
