Sailor 1911 Standard W/ Silver Accents

I got this Sailor 1911 a couple days ago and thought I'd do a review. I discovered, PEN REVIEWS ARE HARD! Crappy photos ahead. Ah well, here goes:

I got this Sailor 1911 off of Ebay (Thank you tax return) from seller pisuke2005 straight out of Japan. I couldn't believe the price and I really wanted the silver trim and all the domestic sellers I found only had gold. I waffled between a Fine or a Medium. I had heard Sailor Fine nibs just really shine, but almost all of my pens are very fine so I thought I'd try out a Medium. The only downside was waiting a little longer, but I figured it'd be worth it. Turns out I didn't have to wait that long though. This sucker got to me in 5 business days! That is lightning fast. I opened it up and there was my pen along with some Green Tea straight from Japan! It's the little things... Off to a good start.

I checked the pen out and man is it beautiful. I loved the trim and style of the pen. Standard cartridge filler. Eh... It is also a rather light pen and not very long. It fit well in my hands. Probably a perfect pen to go in my shirt pocket.

Now, I am a very impatient man, so after taking some pictures and checking out the materials, I inked it up, no flushing for me (hopefully that isn't a Fountain Pen sin). I used J. Herbin Pele Noir. A nice flowing ink that I thought would work well with the pen. Put the pen to paper and, wow. That is a smooth nib. I mean not just smooth, but smoooooooooooooooth. Holy smokes, I could barely tell I was writing on the page. Sailors have a reputation for quality nibs, but the reputation does not do this nib justice. Smoothest nib I own and it is not even close. It is that good.

Although I can use it just fine without posting, putting the cap on proved to be a better experience. Posting it really helps to balance the pen and it seems this pen was designed to be posted. It writes just luxuriously. So smooth, ink output is perfect, nice strong line. It is a pretty firm nib, but it does give some flex.

All in all, I am crazy about this pen. I hope it is durable and not prone to scratching. That is really the only problem, it is too nice and I am not going to want to use it for fear of scratching it or damaging it! Highly, highly recommended.

Excellent review. I have the burgundy model with gold trim in fine nib and absolutely love it. Very smooth writer. Enjoy yours.

I have a 1911 Large with the silver trim and a rhodium 21K Zoom nib. Very classy but understated. If you prefer to write without posting your pens you may find the larger pen to your liking. I prefer a med or brad nib so I quite like the Zoom nib. I also have a Pro Gear with the HF nib - a bit like a F/XF but perfect for thinner ruled paper. Impressively smooth as well. I have found the black finish holds up well so far to normal use.

I have the matte black 1911 with gold trim, and the nib is indeed one of my very best (tied maybe with the custom nib Mike Masuyama nib on my Montegrappa). Both are Fine, but write just as smoothly as a larger size. I hope you enjoy yours for years to come :)

I definitely see a Large 1911 in my (probably distant) future. I am really smitten with this pen. Now I see why I see folks with multiple 1911s so often. I really would like to try out the Fine and Music Sailor nibs. Especially if they are anything like my current nib.

Out of curiosity, and I am sure there are already topics about this, Is there much of a difference between the 21K and 14K nibs?

Size and appearance are the only differences. They feel much the same. I have the 21k H-B and the 14k music nib. Neither was very good out of the box. Pendleton Brown made them grand. I use them both regularly.

I have the KOP PG with the silver accents: a favorite. The broad nib just flows along, and the trim and the squared-off ends contrast nicely with a 149.

A well done review from the Cereal City.

My 1911S with gold trims and an HF nib is also one of my very efficient writers. I love it. My current rotation includes this pen with MB Carlo Collodi in it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
