The changes to FPN: what do they mean?

Admin

Recommended Posts

Dearest Members & Visitors to the Fountain Pen Network,

What do the changes to FPN member accounts mean for you?

  • If you are a Bronze or Silver Member with no commercial interests: absolutely nothing.
  • If you are a Gold Member with no commercial interests: absolutely nothing, with 1 small exception. You cannot post unlimited numbers of listings in Classifeds anymore, but you wouldn't anyway.
  • If you are a Gold Member with commercial (or other) interests: you no longer can advertise in high volumes or at high value without a Premium account.
  • Premium accounts come at a price, at 3 different levels, with 3 different sets of extra options, providing the possibility to advertise your business or services right here on FPN in a variety of ways. The latter was not possible before.

Who can purchase a Premium Account?

Silver and Gold Members only. These accounts are upgradable as well, from one to the other. Do note that purchasing a Premium account is a commitment for a full year and that there is no refund option.

Why these changes?

We need funding to keep FPN running, and hopefully growing. FPN is run by volunteers, but there are certain costs which cannot be avoided, such as hosting, licensing, support and accounting costs.

In order to find out more, please read any of the relevant News items, click on the links in the Side Bar, or in the bar at the top of each page.

Kind regards,

The FPN Admin Team

I joined to promote my hobby, to trade ideas and an occasional fountain pen.

Long ago, I subscribed to a magazine. It turned out to be 75% advertising.

I cancelled.

I am a hardcore capitalist, but it's not the reason I joined. I support these changes.

You will continue to accept voluntary donations, won't you ?

I have to say nice job on listening to people, and adding the appropriate forums!

OK, so that was the reason the board was offline...

Not bad at all. Of course there will always be discussion about this or that subforum.

I do have a suggestion, though:

Keep the news forum for news, and transfer all threads about "where is my ink" and about Cafe Press to the same forum as the LE pens, so all the FPN-related shopping goes together.

Cheers to Wim, and the Admin & Mod team members for all their work yesterday. The old writing instruments forum looks much tidier and more focused now. I like the addition of the China/ROC and Miscellaneous Brands forums. I don't want to even think about how much coffee, pizza and beer was consumed moving those threads around, but it was worth it. Good changes! :)

If you missed the pizza and beer I will be happy to send those responsible for all this work some homemade Scottish shortbread from my great-grandmother's recipe. It travels well.

It looks to me like I just waited too long to sell the thirty or so extra pens I have setting around; I guess I'll have to let them set a bit longer while I think about it..

I did get some amazing cookies in the mail today from the lady who inspired me to start my scholarship. Yes! My friend's mom and I are still in touch. :) And she sent me COOKIES!!

Holy cow they're great too. That first bite brought back some memories. Here's the recipe.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
