Waterman Dark Purple

I often write with dark purple inks, which I consider 'serious' enough for regular business use, whilst giving a bit of individuality and differentiation against mono laser printed documents.

I'm also a big fan of Waterman inks, which I find behave impeccably in all pens, all papers and all weathers!

Putting these two enthusiasms together, I had a go at mixing a dark purple with Waterman Purple and Waterman Black. It worked pretty well, and I've scanned a copy of my test sheet for your interest. The pure colours are on the top line, then three versions of the mix at different ratios. I've settled on the 1B:2P ratio to give an extended road test over the next few weeks. The samples were done with a TWSBI Diamond 540 1.1i dipped in the mix.

A simple recipe, but so is whisky & water, and there's nothing wrong with that. (IMHO!)

Oooh, looks good. I've just discovered the joys of Waterman inks again after buying a bottle of their Purple to complement the Edson I picked up recently. This Dark Purple looks a great alternative to Blue/Black for use at work.

Looks a bit like Diamine Damson which I have recently become quite fond of. I was very disappointed to find Jetpens will no longer be carrying it. It looks like your mix has a bit more shading, what paper did you use?

Hope you enjoy it if you decide to give it a whirl.

I agree - the shading is really quite pronounced. The paper is from a Rhodia stapled notebook of 80gsm paper. I suspect that using the italic nib as a dip pen (pure laziness!) also helps the shading come out.

Love the shading. Simple but effective. Thanks!

You're welcome :)

Thanks for the mix!

Personally I think I would go for the 2:3 ratio though, from your scan - I guess I'll have to try them myself to find out for sure.

The 2:3 came a very close second!

Good to read that another WM mix is safe and effective.

(Besides 50/50 Purple and Florida Blue..)

That one's on my "try soon" list.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
