J. Herbin Gris Nuage

Here's a light, cool grey from J. Herbin. I like it much more than the only other real grey I've tried (Noodler's Lexington Gray).

On a side note, my reviews are going to look a little different for a while. The new computer is too new for my old scanner, so all new reviews (most of which are already written) will be photographed using sunlight and a custom white balance to better represent the true color of the inks. I'll also be going back and re-photographing some old reviews with inaccurate scans.

I'm a fan of grey inks, generally, and this one is well-behaved and a very pretty shade--but it's just too light to use for regular writing. I'm glad I tried a sample rather than a whole bottle.

It looks a lot like Kiri-Same to me, do you have any of that around?

Gris Nuage is quite light - I like it for that quality, but can definitely understand that it would make the ink impractical for, well, many practical uses.

Kiri Same is a bit too red for me. Here's a link to my review of it http://pentulant.blogspot.com/2012/09/ink-review-pilot-iroshizuku-kiri-same.html

Here's a link to another blog post with several grays next to each other. http://pentulant.blogspot.com/2013/02/ink-review-montblanc-albert-einstein.html

Love the grays.

Kiri-same is darker and warmer in tone. Gris Nuage is bluer and much lighter.

I tried my gris nuage with a TWSBI Diamond 580 (medium nib), and I love the way the ink dries in various shades depending on how much ink was laid on the page.

However the ink behaved really really badly with the TWSBI, there were constant hard starts and rail-roading, even though I've used apache sunset on my TWSBI with no issue.

I then tried the ink with the Lamy Safari (bold nib) and after a little tweaking with the nib (the ink just wasn't coming out) the ink came out with no issue. But I find the ink to be very watery, I am in constant fear that the ink in my words would lose surface tension and just merge into a blob.

Now, I was using a sample from Goulet Pens, which I've not had any issues with before, but I don't know whether that may have given me a different experience to everyone else.

Let me emphasize that I LOVE the colour of the ink, I just can't use it with my pens.

Ink Sample Exchange: | Diamine: Ancient Copper (cartridge), Imperial Purple (cartridge), Twilight | Iroshizuku: Ama Iro | Lamy: Black, Blue (cartridges) | Noodler's: Apache Sunset, Navy | J.Herbin: Vert Reseda

Grail Pen: Delta Dolce Vita Demonstrator with Silver Trim

Great review :) Not a grey ink man myself but have a bottle of MB Oyster that I may give a go having seen the possibilities.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
