Noodler's Black

Here's my review of Noodler's Black ink. Not a whole lot that can be said about this ink that hasn't already been said. The only complaint I have with this ink that is actually a deal breaker for me is that it smudges quite a lot from a highlighter and after drying for a while. It doesn't really seem to ever dry for me, it could be that the bottle I have has a higher concentration of dye that if I dilute it with water it will solve the problem, but I haven't had a chance to play around with that yet. It's a very nice black ink, well behaved and is a bullet proof ink so it's going anywhere anytime soon. Some people love this ink, and I can understand why, but I personally can't get on the wagon with it yet, need to experiment with dilution a little to convince me. As it stands I can't get past the fact that it just won't dry and a highlighter smudges it a lot.

Here's my review.

Here's the water test. For this I wrote on a small Rhodia pad and after letting the ink dry for several minutes ran it under tap water for a few seconds.

A good review because it's nice to see someone say that this ink isn't necessarily 'the best thing since sliced bread'. A British expression but appropriate, nevertheless.

Good review, thanks.

You posted about dilution, could you please post you experience on it. There has been a lot of recommendations for the dilution but the compare and contrast is lacking.

I just finished my dilution tests this morning, I will make a post of the result tonight in a new thread. I'll put I link on this thread to it.

I bought Noodler's Black after reading positive reviews on teh forum. I've been disappointed in that it seems to turn to a gray on the cheap paper I normally use. I would love to find a true, deep black. Appreciate your review.

I've used Black on the cheapest, worst papers and it stays BLACK for me. HAd the same smudging problem myself, diluted my bottle a substantial amount and it fixed the problem and the ink is still as black as can be.

Steve. Just plain ol' Steve.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
