Ever since I first held an Edison Mina, I wanted one in a urushi finish. The pen's shape cries out for such a beautiful treatment, doesn't it? I decided too to get one with some personalized maki-e elements.

 

It's impossible to "review" a pen that was made to my specifications...I mean, I love it and use it every day. What you really need to know is that Ernest Shin of Hakumin Urushi, Brian Gray's frequent collaborator, is very talented and very, very good to work with in creating a customized urushi pen. As Strang has pointed out in his review of his stunning Hakumin Edison Pearl with a raden band, you don't even need to know what kind of customization you want because Ernest will help you get to a pen design. In my case, I had some ideas and Ernest and I worked through them quite easily.

 

The nib is a sweet smooth EF nib ground by Michael Masuyama of MikeItWork. The urushi finish is shiro-tamenuri. The turtle and pattern underneath are done in taka-maki-e which is a raised layer technique, giving the pen a nice tactile variation. I love the meticulous, painstaking maki-e work Ernest put into this pen. The pen took a little over a year from order to receipt.

 

My pen is similar to quinden's Hakumin Edison Mina as his was also done in shiro-tamenuri.

Like you said, Ernest is incredibly talented! I wish his website had a 'completed orders' gallery so that all his amazing work was showcased.

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

Lovely detail work done by Ernest. It is so difficult to capture the depth of urushi pens. Nice shot of the detail of the customizations you had done.

There will be sometime in the near future, I've been doing an overhaul and all the recent work will be put in along with that update.

Absolutely lovely pen. Is the turtle raised enough to serve as a roll-stopper?

 

Uh... nope. not raised that much! Plus if you look at other photos of a Mina, you will see that the shape is curved. The taka-maki-e on mine is at the inner most of the inward part of the curve.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
