Parker Sonnet--Fire Dance

I miss my Insignia so much. It's off getting a new cap from Parker at the moment. While at my local pen store here in Houston (Dromgooles), I saw this Sonnet. It had a broad italic 18kt duo tone gold nib. It skips a bit, so I'm going to have it checked out Saturday. This and my Insignia both have an issue with the adhesive that holds the inner and outer sections together has given out and spins freely. Not too much of an issue, but sort of annoying when you need to refill the pen.

I love these pens for some reason. I think it's the spring that the nibs have. My Insignia has a BB steel nib that I ground to a cursive italic. Both pens have amazing line variation. With a bit of pressure, the ink flows beautifully! Great for signing my name.

Enough of the non-sense, on to the pictures:

Writing sample (I realized how small this was. I'll post up a larger one shortly):

Nice! I really wish I had a better experience with my Sonnet. I love the way they look and wouldn't hesitate to buy more in different colors and nib sizes, but even after getting mine sent off to repairs from a nibmeister, I'm still not satisfied with the flow of the pen. Maybe I got a fluke, but I don't know. Maybe I'll try getting a replacement nib for my Sonnet and see if that does me any good. Nice pics and writing sample!

I no longer own any fountain pens... Now they own me.

Mine was writing pretty dry too. I took the nib off, pressed the wings back a little and it's much wetter now.

Sadly, this mirrors my experience as well. Sonnets tend to be beautiful pens, such as the subject of this review, and seem well made. But after several attempts I have found only one that flows reasonably well, and that is maybe a 5/10 flow (I prefer a 6.5/10). Their feeds are just not that well designed, I think. Wish it weren't so.

That's really odd because my insignia has a sonnet nib and feed and ir flows great. This one had its problems, but it actually got too wet. Have yall had the feed channel opened up?

Talking with my local pen repairman, this is super common with these pens. The fix is deepening the channel to allow for better flow. We got it up and writing much better today!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
