Montblanc Meisterstuck 146

The review is finally here. Sorry for taking so long.

There are not many pens that many fountain pen collectors and enthusiasts consider as 'must haves' or 'icons'. The Waterman Carene for example, due to its beautiful inlaid nib. And no one can mistake the Montblanc Meisterstuck 146 due to its cigar shape and Montblanc Snow Cap or bird splat as some say roflmho.gif

The pen is left sleeping in its box until you choose to wake it up from its slumber. The box is classy and simple. Full black with the Montblanc logo on the bottom right hand side.

Once opened you know you have a beautiful pen resting in its bed, waiting patiently to be used.

Now onto the pen itself. Montblanc say it is resin but it feels abit on the plastic side when i compare it to the resin that is on my starwalkers. The weight is just perfect with this pen its not too heavy or too light and gives great control when writing.

As you can see it is not too big or too long to fit in the hand as its bigger cousin, the 149. Its perfect in my opinion in terms of its weight and size.

This pen looks very classy and elegant. Its minimalist design and its appearance make it seem like 'just a pen' to those who are unaware of the snow cap. but once the cap is taken off, its a different story all together!

Behold the beautiful 14k two toned nib which gives Montblanc its reputation for being hand made by master craftsmen. Montblanc say family is the 'roots' of the Meisterstuck range. When you buy one of these you buy it for life, the father and son principle gives it its reputation, a father can pass the pen down to his son and his son after that. Whether or not you believe it's true is up to you but without a doubt this is a beautiful nib.

The attention to detail is excellent. The numbers 4810 are stamped onto the nib along with the Montblanc star. The number 4810 was the estimated height of the Montblanc mountain when the company was founded by Alfred Nehemias and the engineer August Eberstein. I really like this nib.

As you all know the pen is a piston filled fountain pen, which means it will not accept cartridges or converters, just bottled ink.

This works by turning the piston at the back of the pen.

http://i.imgur.com/Gj83v.jpg?1

By turning this it moves the piston down and up to fill the pen with ink

http://i.imgur.com/OGcYj.jpg?1

http://i.imgur.com/ZRvia.jpg?1

As you can see from the ink window the piston mechanism moving up and down.

The nib is buttery smooth with lovely feedback. Is it worth the £440 i spent on it? Im afraid no. Heres a picture of the pen next to my Holy Grail pen

This pen is a truly great pen. But theres something thats holding me back, something thats telling me it doesnt have the 'soul' that Montblanc breathes into its pens when they are made.

8/10

Overall this is a really great pen to write with, the nib is smooth with lovely feedback and it looks classy and elegant. However i personally think it is way over priced and lacks the 'soul' Montblanc talk about. Whether you believe this aswell or not is your opinion. Take care

Today such a thought seems almost absurd....Until you enter the realm of Montblanc's master craftsmen.

I think you captured the look of the 146 quite nicely in your photos. It is a beautiful design. This pen, to my eye, is much better looking than some of the bloated monstrosities that Montblanc is selling these day. I would love to have one but you are spot on about the price. It is just more than I can bear for a mass produced pen. Good review. Thanks.

To think that I paid the equivalent of 300€ for my 149 and for my M1000 in the mid 90s ! Prices surely went up (with the M1000 costing 495€ now, which, I think, is a better investment than the £440 of the 146)

I had tried the 146 in a solitaire edition some years ago, and the nib didn't give me much pleasure. I really wanted the vermeil solitaire, but the nib made me not to buy it. That's how I met Waterman's Edson. Thanks to Montblanc's 146 nib, hehe.

I wonder how I would apprehend a 146 nowadays, now that I have more experience with lots of different nibs.

It's an inanimate object, so I agree no soul. :D Have you tested a MB broad or broader? MB boutiques have tester pens available. One of the really nice discoveries I made was finding that stock MB broads and broader nibs write like stubs (unlike the broad nibs of most other brands). So although my writing is small and I was accustomed to EF and F, and M, I found that the MB broads and BBs allowed me to keep my letters open without having to increase letter size too much and create a script with more flair. A fine or medium are nice working nibs, but lots of folks fall in love with MB with these wider nibs. Here's a nice writing sample with a 146 size MB BB: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/225856-montblanc-poa-gaius-maecenas-4810/

My 1990's 146 cost less than half the new price. I bought it here used. It has perfect weight, balance, and some soul it picked up along the way. It's not the holy grail, however. It is very much a nice pen and an enjoyable writer.

What a wonderful pen...got the same ;)

But what i regret is that i haven't got the pleasure to open the box myself and discover it...I've ordered it from my dealer, took a week.I come with my 500€ billet(was anxious about it)and 5 5€(was not anxious about them).I open the door he see me...say hello took the box open it and put the pen in ink withouth have gave me the time to say NOOOOOOOO.after that he has stand and say me "i suppose that you want to try it?).Well was inked already so i've say yes...it's stupid because it was dark ink and i never never use dark ink except even wha'ts a little bit close to it the montblanc midnight black. Was a great deception for me to haven't opened it myself snif...i think i'm going to suicide :crybaby:

in case someone is anxious for me,be rassured i'm not going to suicide

A people can be great withouth a great pen but a people who love great pens is surely a great people too...

very good review  I have two vintage 146 with the flexible 18c nibs that I bought in second hand are some of my favorite pens. They wrote flawlessly and have never skipped a single time.

Nice review, thank you.

My feelings...very nice pen, overpriced. :hmm1:

The 146 is on my 'hit list' of pens to get for my collection. However, there are a good number of pens on that list that represent better value for money and that's the problem. It's a classic design and shouts quality, but there are others that do the same. I'll definitely get one very soon, but every time I look to press the 'buy' button there's always another pen begging me to be purchased!

It'll be in my collection soon, but will probably look for a mint pre-owned rather than new I think.

Once again, good review and thanks

i've bought and traded a good number of 146s, but have kept two: a bordeaux and a black one with a BB-stub nib, great writers both:

the bordeaux is a semiflex:

the BB is nice and wet:

price-wise, i've been able to find these on ebay and from other sources in the range of $200-$250 used, so you just have to keep an eye out for the good bargains.

There is of course a matter of personal taste. For example, I prefer nibs with feedback like those of Aurora and MB, and sold all my pens that lacked the feedback, like Pelikan and Omas. Some will feel exactly the opposite.

I could never stand toothy pens like Auroras. Glad that all my vintage MB nibs have zero feedback and no toothiness

I bought a used one, with an old fashioned one tone 18K medium nib and I must say that it is a wonderful fountain pen, al least mine is very smooth and I love to write with it. Albeit I do prefer broader nibs, this one is very nice. My problem is that it is a famous brand, well known because of their high prices, so it not always easy to use it. Instead, some other brands are not that eye catching. But it is something to discuss with the therapist

I have a MontBlanc Meisterstuck fountian pen in 146 Vermeil that is in fine condition. I am wondering how to price for eBay. I would like to get a smaller pen. I greatly appreciate your assistance. Thank you!

I am not a Montblanc fan. I swore I would never buy one. But I am opened minded and a friend on FPN has a 146 after a classical musician that she adores. I found a 1970 146 Meisterstuck on isellpens.com and took the plunge. I have not one regret, it is a gorgeous writer and will soon be going to P.Brown. Would I buy another, yes, but not a new one...I believe they are well overpriced. I would however look for another from the 70's or 80's in good condition.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
