Vegan Sealing Wax Project

as proper vegan sealing wax (not the hot glue kind) seems non-existant i propose a collaborative effort to come up with a recipie anyone can use to make their own mail safe vegan sealing wax!

as far as i see it there are 3 necesary components a wax blend for bulk and flexibility, resin and dyestuff

as both a chandler and incence hobbiest i have attempted this on my own with limited sucess.

for resin i used colophony or pine resin a blend of soywax and palm stearin and parrafin based candle dye flakes

which seems to work well apart from proportions, flexibility and dye bleeding (i over saturated the mix(

any of the more chemistry inclined want to chime in, it would be great even for the non veggies to have an easy to make basic wax formula that anyone can tweak/ experiment with

As a vegan who knows nothing about sealing wax (had a brief love-affair with it in grade school but haven't touched it since) I'm afraid I will be of no help whatsoever to you!

Is it beeswax in sealing wax that makes it non-vegan? For some reason I thought more modern sealing waxes were plastic of some sort.

Hrm. Well, I'm watching closely, that's for sure, and if you get closer to recipes I'll definitely try to make them. That will give you the point of view of someone completely clueless. :roflmho:

I had the same question as Tess. I thought all modern sealing wax had no animal products. You should contact the Organics Studio people who have developed organic fountain pen ink.

beeswax, shellac and carmine (red colouring) are what concern me

i know that at least j herbin have beeswax and carmine in them although they use colophony (pine resin) along with shellac

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
