De Atramentis Wizard Blue

I've slowly been making my way through the Magic Boarding School inks. So far, I've kind of hated all of them. The Magic Dragon was a nice colour but it smelled atrocious, and the Mandrake was only really rich and pretty one one type of paper. Generally, I had been terribly disappointed with the Magic Boarding School inks (I still love De Atramentis' regular line, and I still do!)

Onto this stage, came Wizard Blue.

After seeing Halden's review of this ink from so long ago, I was expecting a very purple-blue ink, so I was pleasantly surprised when this came out a deep, rich blue-black.

I was super grateful that the smell wasn't terrible - like a light, slightly odd smelling mint. Although it does give me a twinge of the ickies, it's not too bad and not too strong. Having said that, if I could find this ink in a version without smell, I'd jump on it.

This ink behaves well on all types of paper - no feathering, no bleed through, and nice shading! I've never really liked blue-blacks, but this ink is a new favourite of mine. So much so that I filled a TWSBI 530 with it twice in a row. :D :D :D That almost NEVER happens.

As usual, more pictures in my photobucket album here.

Nice review. This looks exactly like my DeAtramentis Sherlock Holmes ink. I wouldn't be surprised if they are the same blue, or nearly. Jon Szanto tested a Sherlock Holmes sample against Year of the Dragon, and those two look very similar, too.

Sherlock also is a very nice dark blue that behaves well. It has no scent.

That is a beautiful blue! Thanks for the review. I've wondered about these inks. I like DeA in general but I'm not much into Harry Potter ;)

I tried a sample of Sherlock Holmes and found that it looks kinda chalky on some paper. Also, on some paper it had a greenish tinge. Is anyone finding either of those to be the case with Wizard Blue?

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Prussian Blue is greener. This is more like Diamine Denim to my eye.

Another lovely review, Saskia

This ink looks beautiful! Very much like De Atramentis Atlantic blue. If you would like to compare the two, please drop me a PM with your address and I'll send some over.

Warm regards,

Just in case you wanted to know, this is one ink that has faded in the sample bottle that was kept out of the light and in a temperate room. The color that I have is gray or blue gray. NOT the the blue-black from above. I'll post samples this week.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
