De Atramentis Witch Red

I wanted to like this ink, I really did. I thought "Witch Red" would be rich and gorgeous, but honestly? It's a dull, flat, lifeless, brick red, although the colour looks passable on Rhodia paper.

Also, the horrendous smell - a distressing combination of sickly sweet flowers and rubbing alcohol. Not as bad as Magic Dragon, but BAD.

I also don't like how it feathers on everything except Rhodia paper. See? It even feathers a bit on CF paper!

I have LOTS more images of this ink in my photobucket review album here.

It looked good to me, at least on the picture seen from afar... But up close... Yeah, pink. Thanks for the review!

Perhaps the scents of the Magic Boarding School inks were inspired by the every flavour jelly beans from Harry Potter?

I agree with Pseudo, it looked good from afar, kind of reminded me of Tiananmen or the 1670 I just bought, then you got up close and it just looks kind of garbage-y :( . Thank you for the review.

Odd. DeAramentis must have changed things up.

My couple-of-year-old bottle of Witch Red - which is how my DA Halloween ink is labeled (the one with the flying witch) - is vivid orange. I never was able to identify the "witch scent", apart from smelling faintly like Renuzit®. Nonetheless, my witch red Halloween ink is an autumn staple for me.

Do you have any more magic inks left? If you don't want them I'd be glad to try some!

I bought de atramentis tobacco recently and I hate the smell...

Ahh... DeA Tobacco Brown... my bottle has a nice brown fair to middling hue indeed indicative of a few pipe tabacco browns (and I had a lot of them) but the scent itself is bad... just like the phoney synthetic chemical smell of the cheapest, lowsiest offers out there.

I'm starting to like the scent it's not as bad if smelled out of a vial. I guess in smaller quantities it's not as bad.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
