I was using my Iphone, don't currently have my camera on me, so sorry for the poor picture quality and lighting.

Thanks for this comparison review. I have both these pens in my collection. It is interesting to note the excellent nib engraving job that MB has done on that little 145 nib of theirs. Side by side with the M600's nib, the engraving quality difference is glaring.

Thanks for the nice review. They both seem like good writers and I'm sure will last your lifetime. The MB must be small since nibs on the M600 and M400 are interchangeable. No big deal, the nib on my MB 100 years pen is small and writes wonderfully.

Hari, I don't see a difference in quality in how the nibs are stamped or finished. Never have, unless we are talking MB Writer's Edition nibs. The MB is smaller, and has finer lines, but one does not seem to be higher quality than the other.

I had never noticed them (the diffrence) either with naked eyes, but the picture in the review:

The engraving/stamping looks deeper, more crisp and well defined on the MB. but YMMV.

THis is a wonderful review, I really enjoyed it.

And, to my eye, I prefer the line of the Pelikan. I don't know the name of the person who customized the nib for you... where did you buy it?

Its true, there is a big difference in what seems to be the 'quality' of the imprint on both nibs. In my opinion, the MB has much crisper and refined details.

Thats why I didn't want to compare the nibs - albiet both write beautifully. My MB is a stock F nib where as the Pelikan is a stub italic .6mm. The pen came from nibs.com (no affiliation) and John Mottishaw customized the nib out of the box.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
