Twsbi 540 Amber

PinarelloOnly

Recommended Posts

I love Amber/Orange demos and when this pen was announced I could not wait for it to join my other two 540's.

The extra fine nibs are excellent right out of the box and write like an EF should.

I certainly own more expensive pens but the TWSBI 540 a game changer for a quality pen vs. price.

This is more of a pictorial review....see my other 540 Diamond review for more comments.

Love my 540 and ROC but the EF is a wee too fine for my tastes. Great photos, especially the last two. Thanks for sharing.

Great photos! I agree, it does set a new standard in price/quality ratio. Attractive, durable, holds a lot of ink, comfortable, a good broad nib, Apple-like package, and cheap. Good stuff.

My amber is with an M nib. Good to hear you find the EF nib to be smooth. I was burned once with TWSBI's EF nib; so, I opted for M as I already have an F with the clear model.

Hi guys,

I would like to ask you: Is there a big difference between Schmidt's and Bock's nibs in smoothness? I have TWSBI 540 EF with a Schmidt's one, do you think it is worth buying another nib by Bock?

Thanks

Just got an amber 540 with a B nib. Filled it with Pelikan Brilliant Brown, a color I used to hate. Love it now!

I have a Fine Schmidt and an Extra-Fine Bock. Changing to a Bock will be worth every penny in my opinion - the difference in smoothness is incredible. The Schmidt nib is good, yes, but the Bock is wonderful. I prefer it to many of the nibs on much more expensive pens.

Amazing photos! :puddle: I want that orange so bad!

Thank You!

1) Are these pens available?

2) Is the "Bock" nib available?

3) Is an italic nib available?

4) Where?

Tom all I can tell you is that I bought all of my TWSBI's from Goldspot.com located in NJ.

I never thought I'd like the Amber, but seeing your pictures I now really, really want one! The shots on sales websites seem to make it look very yellow, but from your review it seems like a 'proper' amber. And thank you for the great pictures!

I agree. I snagged my first TWSBI, a clear 540 M early March, and added another (clear 1.1mm) just a few days ago. I also got a B nib unit to swap into the Medium.

I was told that the nibs I have are the current Bock ones. None of them needed to be aligned or smoothed, and they write just as well as any pen I have or owned.

Before, if I needed a knockabout pen, I had to compromise on ink capacity, size, nib feel or all of the above. These days, I keep my more expensive pens at home and rely on the TWSBIs for daily use. As a bonus, most of the non-pen folks at the office find them "pretty."

I would love to know what camera and lens you used for those really nice close-up photos!

Tom/

Thanks. Most of the photos from the top down were with my Nikon D90. The last few were with my D7000 with both bodies using a Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D macro lens.

Ah! That's why they are so sensational! Thank you.

Beautiful pictures! Alas, my Nakaya shield is totally ineffective against TWSBI. I always have one inked. It is the lone non-Platinum/Nakaya with non-gold nib, that never leaves rotation. I was hanging content with my 530, now I need a 540! The idea that the Bock nib could be even nicer than the Schmidt boggles the mind. I also like the news that it is a little larger. The 530's nib always looked a little small for the pen body, but allowed for maximum control by keeping the fingers closer to the paper.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
