A nice review. You captured the essence of the M-F nib for me - a true Japanese F is really too spidery for my use. The M-F is a very fine size and smooth with just a hint of feedback as you mention. Mine is on a Pro Gear, so is 21K and I looked for a year and found one with the two tone feature. It's a pen I really enjoy writing with and frequently take on trips using Sailor cartridges exclusively then.

"how do I know what I think until I write it down?"

Very nice pictures and good review. I recently bought a Sailor Sapporo (very similar pen) with a MF nib as well, and I really like it. I find it's extremely smooth (not bought from a nibmeister so this is factory standard) with the hint of feedback you mentioned. Overall a very nice pen. Congratulations on the purchase.

Thanks for the comments; glad you like my photography, Holypie. I'm still learning, and I need a macro lens so I can get better close-ups, but I agree that these came out pretty well.

Just a short update: this is a pretty wet-writing pen. In most pens, a converter of ink will last me a week or two, but it's been about 3-4 days and it's nearly dry. I have done quite a bit of writing with it (for me) though - 3 pages of A4, 2 pages of 8.5x11, 8-10 pages of A5, plus miscellaneous notes.

I just got my 1911 MF as well, but I wasn't a fan of the nib. It feels rough to me, and not very smooth. My $10 Pilot 78G F is more smooth, actually. So is my Sheaffer 100 F and my Esterbrook 9556 Fine. The pen looks incredible, though, so I am sending it in for adjustment and/or replacement. Hoping it turns out good. I don't mind a little feedback, like I have with my Waterman Kultur F or my Parker Vacumatic, but it's just a bit too much to let me write smoothly without using too much effort.

I absolutely adore my MF nib. I think it's just right, offering a blend of smoothness and fineness.

It really is a gem when it comes to writing.

Thanks for the great review!

I totally agree with you that unposted the pen just feels a little bit too light and too short. However just like you I prefer to write posted and as you said, then the balance is perfect. :)

Just a follow-up to my post, I sent the pen back and the nib was found to be defective and I will be sent a replacement. I opted for a medium instead of another MF, as I thought it was just a hair too fine. Can't wait to see how smooth it should've been! :)

Glad to hear that it's getting resolved - hope you enjoy the new pen.

Coleam, I've also wondered, if a gritty white residue on the threads of yellow gold 14K Sailor nib-sections could be corrosion. Viewed with a 10X loupe, some threads show rough burrs on their crests.

I have three (yellow gold) 14K nib-sections with such burrs & two that have beautiful, clean machining & finish.

My two Rhodium plated 14K nib-section threads (maybe chrome plated?) don't seem to be affected.

At first, I was concerned that the rougher male threads on some of the sections could damage the softer female threads in the PMMA resin barrel. After a year of almost daily use, the thread fit remains tight. I occasionally use a fine tooth brush to clean the threads.

Thanks for a thorough review & enjoy that Sailor Mid-Size 1911.

Yeah, it does appear to be corrosion. I just took another look at it (almost 3 months later) and it's now green, not white. The section threads are probably brass, which can corrode. Gonna try hitting it with a toothbrush or something to see if it cleans out. (And I do indeed enjoy my 1911 :cloud9: )

The white residue on my threads suggests to me that the section threads may be made of an incompletely anodized aluminium. But if your threads show green, then the metal could indeed be brass. I'd think there wouldn't be any problems with these fittings, if they're kept clean.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
