Noodler's Piston Filled Fountain Pen

This is a great pen to leave in your pocket or at your desk, and never worry about. You can get a couple, or three, of them, and leave them wherever you need to write, without fear of theft.

Pocket-patrol

This is a C-H-E-A-P pen. €10.39, or $14.99, nabs you quite possibly the best piston-filled pen on the market in the €10-100 price bracket.

Va-Va-Voom

Let me say this now: this is not a showcase pen. You are not going to put this pen on your mantel, and chat about it to foreign dignitaries. Yet, I can safely say that it is the nicest pen in its price range. Simple, clean black-and-chrome design, threaded cap, vintage bow window, and traditional narrow nib. A slight flaw is that the cap of the pen has a hole in it, presumably from finishing. If I were to nit-pick, I'd mention the misalignment of the clip band with the rest of the cap, and the slightly tarnished chrome accent just below the nib, as well as the fact it looks somewhat plain.

But this is a 10 euro pen.

And I don't like nitpicking. It makes me write more.

Nib

The nib on this thing is the smoothest that you are going to find in an under-€60 pen. Yes, it's stainless steel - but it feels damn good. Plus, most any #2 (medium-fine) nib will fit the feed, so you can go to town.

Weight

And here comes a flaw. It is light. Really REALLY light. My J. Herbin feather quill is heavier. With a full reservoir, and posted, it is slightly heavier than those despicable blue Stabullo disposable ball-point pens.

Bear in mind, however - this is a €10 pen. Yes, fountains should have a certain 'heft' to them, but it doesn't feel as satisfying to hold as, say, a Parker Frontier, which you can get for €20. (Then again, that is double the price, and the Frontier nib is rubbish compared to this one)

Sturdiness

Despite being light, the pen itself feels quite sturdy. The piston is quite smooth, although I have heard people complain of it disengaging from the threads.

Final Word of Supposed Wisdom

If you like value and want a good workhorse pen, you couldn't do better for €10. Yet... I seem to feel a sinking feeling as I think that with a couple of slight adjustments, it could be better. But who can argue with a hard ebonite feed and a great nib for €10?

Very interesting review Luke! I also noted that you are Maltese like me! I am a fan of Noodler's ink, but I have not yet ever purchased any Noodler's pen. This is not really related to the topic of this posting, but I need to stock up on some more Noodler's ink which I used to buy from The Writing Desk in the UK, but they have been out of stock for months and months. Buying from eBay from US sellers is much more expansive. From your profile I realised that you are also a fan of Noodler's ink, and would appreciate any help from you as to where you buy your Noodler's ink?

Hi Luke! Many thanks for your link. I had heard of this seller but it never occurred to me that they also sell ink and they have a very wide selection. I have in fact bookmarked the link to their site which you have indicated. Many thanks also for your offer to help, which I reciprocate if I may be of any help to you.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
