My last Fountain Pen: The Petrarque from Fred FaggionaTo

 

Yesterday evening, I have received the waited parcel and with emotion, as always when I wait a new pen, I have discovered My Petrarque.

Some days before, I have had the great pleasure to test one but not mine.

 

The Petrarque is a marvel in woodgrain hard rubber, a pure line very elegant.

His pen is very well made, perfect balance and is great writer, with its large 14K gold Bock F nib.

 

133 mm closed - 161 mm cap on the barrel – 127 mm opened

14 mm in diameter in most hardly

Weight with converter: 15 g and without cap: 9

 

Fred FaggionaTo, a new French Pen maker in Tarbes (South of France).

He designed and crafted Fountain Pens in various precious materials as Hard rubber in several colors, Galatithe and also in modern resins.

Very soon, he will propose a new design in wood and woodgrain hard rubber.

This pen is really wonderful.

As, I said, I have received my pen only Thursday evening but I have taken it with me to the office on Friday.

Probably as a majority, I use a computer and I take some notes with a pen sometimes with 1/ 2 hours between each used of FP. With this one, no problem, it starts as soon as the nib touches the paper.

 

Yesterday evening, I took advantage of a little of time to advance my correspondence (real by postal mail!) and I used of course my new FP during at least 3 hours. A real pleasure. The pen is light either too fine or too big. Neither tensing of fingers, nor fatigue.

 

The Bock nib slides magnificently well on the paper: classic A4 paper, Post-it, bound paper, beautiful Vergé paper.

The pen in itself is beautiful.

Alas, when it comes to those prices, I get oversensitive over details. And to see the nib engraved with "Bock" and only 14 carats, is quite disappointing, even if not disqualifying.

 

Last but not least, could you post a writing sample ? Tia !

We're almost neighbors. You could have more information about the Fred works on the French Pen Forum (in French) http://forum.styloplume.net under “Fred” username if you want.

 

I will try to answering to your doubt concerning the nib:

 

Fred chose a nib 14K to offer more flexibility because more the golden content is strong for the modern nibs more they are stiff. The choice is not thus based on the prize of the nib but for the pleasure of the writer. Nib18K are moreover cheaper than 14K Bock.

 

The bock logo: For Fred's pens we know where from come nibs. Visconti, Delta, ….used Bock nibs in 14K, 18K, 23K palladium without any mention of the manufacturer of the nib. The reputation of nibs Bock is well established.

 

Fred is a new Pen maker, he is a true artisan, he starts and does not produce a large number of FP. When Visconti order for 10000 nibs to Bock, Fred order for 100 !

At this time, he cannot engrave the nib with his logo, a day he hopes that.

 

The brand Fred FaggionaTo is not yet much known, it's true but I assure you that it deserves to be. By selling these pens at that price, I think Fred does a very, very small margin.

 

I'm totally won over by my pen, material, quality finishes, the pen and I have great admiration for those who dare to embark on such an adventure especially in France, you know how this is not easy.

Good evening Nathalie,

 

I am aware Bock nibs are good quality ones. Regarding 14c, that's more a preference of mine.

So the only visible brand this pen carries is Bock (even if the clip and the top of the cap have the double F, barely visible, as I could see on other pictures). That's a pity. I thought there could be non-engraved nibs, just carrying the 585 and line width mentions. I wonder if I wouldn't have prefered this. This nib looks a bit too much like a MB copy, in this particular design.

 

Anyway, I already saw the white Pétrarque earlier and it's very beautiful, overall. I'm not sure I could resist it if I could try it, but I wouldn't buy a pen at that price without testing it. Hopefully Mr Mora will order some.

 

Note : I'm just back from reading the test on the forum you mentionned, where I read that the clip is turning around the cap.

 

Apologies for not sharing your intense enthusiasm, but I've already been disappointed by some quite expensive pens and I might sound as if I'm rebuted by small yet obvious details.

Without seeing more of it, and with the things I noticed, I think that some more € to insure a better finish would have made it.

But again, I'm pretty sure such a pen is still more interesting than a MB Mark Twain which sells 3 times the price and screams "hey, i'm cheap plastic made" from all its imperfections.

Rant for Bock nibs removed.

 

As Noobie I didn't know better and let Bock nibs lay around my nib box.

I have regular, semi-flex, maxi-semi-flex, and easy Full Flex Bock nibs even a couple in gold.

Mostly Steel, but one of my better nibs inside my top 15 is a gold 1955 Bock semi-flex.

 

They never got a fair test, because when I laid them away , as singles or on 'no name' pens needing repair. I didn't know much at all.

 

I didn't even know I had a maxi-semi-flex/'flexi' nib/pen, much less that I had the whole spectrum from regular up to easy full flex in Bock in pens needing repair.

 

18 K is not normally a goal for me. Good Steel or Good 14 K is.

 

Degussa and Rupp nibs are also good. Some of my better nibs are these.

 

The pen manufactures do not want the best Bock nib, just one good enough for ball point users.

I‘m not a great specialist of nib. I love the nice long nib and as Fred has chosen a large #6 14K gold Bock nib, a great nib reference, I can only appreciate.

 

The clip can be removed to have a pen "cigar" by undoing the top of the barrel. The clip does not turn, it can be simply badly positioned in the reassembly. But we are very too attentive to make such a thing.

 

The white Petrarque in Galatithe is really beautiful, I'm agree

 

Please note also that the pens can be converted into rollers, with a conversion kit.

Well, I took photos of the feed and I have removed the "small section" of the section. But, I do not dare to unsettle the nib of the feed (I make it on my Man 100 and it should be the same operation but I dare not :embarrassed_smile: ).

Nathalie, have you tried using this pen as as an ED filled pen? Ink directly in barrel? is it recommended?

Hari, the Petrarque is not an Eye Dropper FP, it works (I haven't the right word in English!) by internationnal cartridges (small or large size, I have checked) or by the converter provided (Very good quality in comparaison with some other that I have).

Beautiful pen! I don't care that the nib is engraved "Bock 585". FP people know that Bock is the top of nibs: in fact I have some pens with Bock nibs and all of them only have the name of the FP brand. Bock make the best nibs today and who wins the good reputation are the Visconti, Pelikan, Delta etc.
