The Messy Wax Seal Award

I think you'll all agree that I win "The Messy Wax Seal Award." I've done some pretty good seals lately, but I lost it on this post card. I guess it would have made more sense to put the wax seal on before I wrote the address and message - and put a 98 cent stamp on it. That way, if the seal was a disaster, I could toss the card in the trash. But I like to live dangerously. As it is, one of my overseas pen pal friends will actually receive this lovely creation. I hope they will forgive me. I am wax seal challenged, but I'm determinded to get the hang of it. Practice, practice, practice.

gosh! that's not so bad!

i have used my hanko with wax and have found that a little less wax is better than more - and i hold the seal in place just until the wax begins to set- remove the stamp slowly.

Yes, I've finally realized that I use entirely too much wax. And on this particular seal, I think I waited too long to put the seal in the wax. Applying wax seals is how I imagine it would be to dive off a cliff and hope you hit the water between the rocks below.

I think that is still totally acceptable. I spent a long time getting one with the wax. It is NOT easy. It is an art and each wax and seal is different. I can so relate.

Well, all I can say is that I wouldn't be unhappy to get that on a postcard.

Just curious... does the Post Office really let you mail postcards with a seal on them? Seems to me that even a well-done seal makes quite a lump, and postcards don't usually have attachments.

  • 2 years later...

I was surprised to learn USPS will still allow wax on letters.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
