Pretty pen. Sadly my cellphone won't allow me to read your review. I assume thumbs up.

Watch Art. Just curious, what was the biggest thing that turned you off the 149?

Two nibs. The first is a stock medium, second is a Minuskin stubbed fine. It was really dry, so I bent the tines up a little (it had been bent down to make it dry) and now it's pretty juicy.

as for the 149...

The way the nib(s) felt on paper. (I went through two nibs - Niksch swapped the first M out to an XF/F) The shape of the pen, even though it's gorgeous, just didn't fit my hand. It wasn't anything to do with the looks of the pen, it was how it felt in my hand. And I didn't care for it posted either. It just felt sort of short and squatty, like the nib was too big for the pen and I had to hold it funny to use it. I also really like the weight of the M1000 more. It's heftier, but by only a bit.

I've got exactly the reverse experience. I wanted the Pelikan first, because, well, it came in green stripes! My primary complaint about the 1000 is the ridge where the piston knob meets the barrel. That seems to hit me exactly wrong. On the 149, the shape offers no ridges to bug me. And I already know your feelings about wet nibs, so I'm not surprised you like the Pelikan, but I couldn't find an ink that worked for me in mine.

That's why people say it, and MEAN it: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!!! But at least with these type of pens, it's easy enough to unload them and recoup most or all of the investment.

I have a M1000 medium nib and I love it!! I prefer M1000 3B, but when I want use a M nib, It's quite juicy and springy (almost semi-flex), an unique experience! This is my best M nib of all my pens!

Congratulations!! Enjoy!!

Nice review and excellent handwriting. Definitely want an M1000 at some point...just like I want a Duofold at some point....Only after I complete my grail collection!!

Enjoy your pen

Thanks for the review on what must be the ultimate pen. I'm sold on Pelikan but I'm afraid the 1000 would be too gargantuanesque for my hand. What ink is that, by the way? The color kept distracting me from the review.

I'm going to have a guess at Aurora Blue :)

I'm going to have a guess at Aurora Blue :)

This blue is really vivid! The photos show how beautiful it is. On the other hand, the scan pics don't make justice to this great ink.

I guess it's Noodler's Eel Blue!

The scans look like J.Herbin Bleu Myosotis and the pictures look like Blue Eel. I'm basing this only on the scans I've seen and drooled over. Maybe it's time for a blue ink order

Thanks for a great review of a great pen. I love my M1000 (also Green Stripe) it was the first "Nice" pen I ever got. I was at the FPH in NYC and tried all different types. The salesman and I had a lot of time to talk and finally he asked me...do you want to write with it or is the pen you are looking for mostly for display with only occasional writing. I told him I wanted to use it to write and he immediately said "Then you need to try a Pelikan"... I like big pens, tried several, and the rest is history :)

I have other pens that I like a lot but the M1000 is somewhat unique...

Thanks again!

Dave

WHAT DO YOU MEAN!! YOU DO NOT LOVE THE MB 149????!!!!??? I am shocked--this is sacrilege!! LOL HaHaHa

I now have three M 1000's and they are just great--I still love the MB 149's but the M 1000 fits some drawing jobs better. I used a B nib for all the sketches for my "Trains Go" book--I even feel the top of the cap looks like a piston or machine part! I like the M 1000 for more industrial heavier handed work. MB 149's for more lyrical lines and ideas.

I am using a M 1000 on my new book "Little Zephyr Takes Flight" about a girl who flies in a flying machine from the pre-Wright Bros. era. It is a EF nib that Richard Binder made super wet to keep up with the flex that it has--LOVE IT!!

The funny thing is I have two solid black M1000's and one green stripe---I hardly ever use the green stripe(I like the look of the stripe just never use it!)--I am such a black pen guy!

Another M1000 fan here. I also love my 149.

The big advantage over the 149 has to be the replaceable nibs. I have one XXF with a Binderized Waverly tip, and an extra OB nib (picked up in a trade for a Parker 51) I had Letta at Pendemonium grind to a cursive italc. Both are really great.

I am probably going to pick up a stock F at some point; though that Minuskin fine stub sounds tempting (maybe a trade for a pen?)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
