Porsche Design Tecflex P3110

I think, I first saw this pen in the Fountain pen hospital catalog of 2005. Later that year, a local pen seller in my city showed me the pen and its matching ballpoint. I was really taken by the gold-steel weave. Even though the asking price was reasonable, it was out of range for me and I was also not such a pen nut as I am now 6 years later.

Fast forward six years...

My favorite activity on free weekends is to visit the local pen shops . On such one weekend, around three weeks back, I was visiting the same shop (The Bombay Fountain pen depot), the assistant was very happy to see me and told me that he had been waiting for me for around two weeks, some pens had arrived and he wanted me to have the first right of refusal, he had lost his cell phone with all the contacts and was unable to call me to inform. The first pen he showed me was a black and gold capless, one slim Pilot and lastly he took out this Porsche design. Now, I have been looking for a good deal on this pen for a pretty long time. I have an automatic search setup on ebay for this, all gold/steel variants going for too high prices. I calmly asked him, how much? he quoted a very good price, much lower than the online going prices. The deal was finalized then and there, followed by a brief discussion with the assistant and the shop owner about Caran d'ache pens and then a short visit to the ATM later, the pen was mine.

I had dry tested the pen at the shop for smoothness, after reaching home, I popped in a Diamine Jet Black cartridge, the ink raced down the slit, the pen is a superb writer.

I sat down to admire the pen, I am very impressed with the attention to detail that has gone into the pen. I could find no faults, the pen is built to last.

The barrel threads onto the section spigot. It is a superb design.

Barrel threads on the brass insert:

Plated gold nib: Plain utilitarian look. The pen is a rigid writer, but the point has been ground expertly and the pen simply glides on paper:

Nicely finned plastic feed:

The cap posts securely onto the barrel end, note the three spring loaded nubs:

I took this picture to show the elegant profile of the clip. It is a solid clip, not hollow.

Note the nicely textured surface finish of the cap, amazing attention to details:

Finally a brief writing sample. The ink flow is controlled, not too wet.

Dimensions:

Capped: 5 3/4 inches

Uncapped: 5 1/2 inches

Posted: nearly 7 inches!

After having used it for a few weeks, the pen has proved to be a good and reliable writer. The pen is well balanced unposted, it becomes too long posted and back heavy too. The metal section is not slippery, I have an allergy to metal sections but this one does not bother me.

I like the pen for its excellent construction and attention to detail, I am glad I was able to buy it.

Cheers!

Hari

This pen has been on my radar for a while but every time I have had the money something seems to come up that is a higher priority. Congrats Hari and enjoy .

In all seriousness the pictures that you posted... are awsome and if I had not already ordered a Edison 76 bulb filler I would be spending it on this.

The pen I use have a medium nib which writes very thick, it writes thicker than my medium lamy safari , also it is a very wet writer so its too thick and feathers too much for me to use as a daily writer. VERY smooth nib though.

Got one with a fine nib, and got an extra medium nib from a FPN member who did not like the thickness.

I really like it. The section is a little on the slim side, and I get quite a bit of nib creep with Iroshizuku Kon Peki, but otherwise has been a delight to use. After damaging a couple of pens from drops, I like that this is really sturdy and is a daily user.

Enjoy it.

The pen is mightier than the sword, and I wield an extrafine point...... En garde!! :-)

after all what are reviews for, pulling other addicts deeper into the pit :P the 76 looks very nice, must try an Edison.

Have you tried switching inks? sometimes it might help with the feathering. Actually I prefer wet flowing pens, my pen is neither wet nor dry.

Enjoy it.

Thanks, the pen is a keeper.

My purpose is served if this review makes you go out and buy one. :roflmho: . My pen purchase frequency has not increased, I just took out the camera and took some pics of a few of my recent additions. Hope to see some reviews of your pens.

  • 2 years later...

The P'3110 is easily one of my favorite pens. I don't have any pens that write smoother than this one (including my Lamys, high-end Namikis, and Mont Blancs). The design is beautiful and eye-catching enough, but the real wonders of this pen are when it hits the paper. Ink delivery is well controlled and the nib makes nary a sound as it seemingly floats over the paper. No skipping, no fuss, just enjoyable writing. I can't recommend these enough.

Lovely pen! The only issue I see with it is that I must enjoy it vicariously for now.

The weave is striking. I like the 'under two over two' pattern very much and the fact that the "gold" fibres only enter from one direction makes a nice accent. I think if there were an equal number of blue and gold bands in the weave it would become garish. As such, it remains very stylish and distinctive.

I am realy intrigued by the spring-loaded balls that assist in posting the pen. I've not seen this before on any other. From a design standpoint, this is a winner. The fact that is writes well too is a highly desireable bonus and that's realy the only reason to own any pen. :)

I must congratulate you on the use of a complementary background for your photos. You have an eye for design.

Thanks again.

I love the design but am leery of metal sections. They seem slippery to me.

skyppere

The exceptions are sterling silver sections and nicely micro textured sections like on this one. Try the pen out at a shop if you get the chance.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
