I just found a two dollars notebook that is fountain pens friendly. I found the notebook at the Dollarama shop. It is made by Studio and contain Pella Paper mention at the base of every page. I did a test using Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher and no feathering, not ink passing trough and a rigid cover. The product number is 05-3013769 (SKU 67888083527). It holds 80 sheets.

When you have a nice find like this you need to stock up. There is a chain of shops in Oz called the Reject Shop and they have cheap run outs of a variety of products. picked up a beautiful no-brand notebook a few years ago. When I tested it at home it was sensational. Went back a week later to stock up and they were gone. Strike whilst the iron is hot and stock up is my tip.

Looks to be the perfect size for an ink journal.

It fit in a pocket it was one of my main conditions.

Also, it does not have optical brightener. It is a plus for those who use Noodler's blue ghost. I did the test using a UltraFire WF-501B 3W UV 395~400nm LED then counter verified with a Merangue The Foiler unit (6W neon unit with a much wider UV spectrum). The second is better but not portable as it use sector current for working.

also have one of these, but i found out that some inks don't like it much and don't penetrate the paper. haven't used it much, i don't like the fact that the cover paper is ivory colored. no feathering and bleeding, so that's kinda good.

Do you recall what inks those were?

We've tried several Diamine inks, as well as Waterman and J. Herbin so far with no issues.

The paper is not bright white, so the inks look a bit different compared to writing on white paper.

Picked up two of those, and just tried it with some Platinum Carbon ink - with very good results.

Actually, considering the price, it is is rather EXCELLENT!

Thank you to the Original Poster for the tip

  • 10 months later...

+1 on these, the paper is not bad at all, atall. Lately there has also been a Moleskine-looking version for $2 at Dollarama.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
