Akkerman Shocking Blue

There are several threads on Akkerman ink on this forum. Akkerman is a fountain pen shop in The Hague that was founded in 1910. To mark their 100 year aniversary last year, they introduced an ink line; 30 colours in stunning bottles. All colour names refer to the city of The Hague. If you want any names explained, please let me know.

Today I got myself a bottle of colour nr. 5, Shocking Blue. Below you can read my review:

Their website is quite informative (though it is in Dutch)

Several American forum members have ordered this ink directly at Akkerman's. You will find further information on this matter in other Akkerman threads on this forum.

Wow, nice review. I will definitely have to order that one for sure. I love blue inks and the bottle is one that I have been ogling for awhile now.

Thanks for the great review!

awesome review! it's cool to see this ink that's been posted so much about finally in action :) looks like the ink gives some impressive saturation without bleedthrough, though it might require blotting paper for use in a notebook.... hmm..... and so my shopping list grows ;)

thanks for posting!

Currently inked:

Smoke TWSBI 540, F, with Diamine Onyx Black

Pilot Prera, M, with De Atramentis Jules Verne

What a BEAUTIFUL colour! I HAVE to have it! It's so beautiful. It has an almost crystally sheen! Might I ask, how is the lubrication?

Greetings Tim, et al,

Thanks for the review- they have a couple of colors I'd like to try- especially now that I know they're wet and well lubed inks. Does anyone know a US or British dealer for these inks? (I can't speak any other language but English).

All the best,

Hi your Royal Penness,

I find this ink quite wet and maybe a bit greasy. Does that answer your question?

I was going to ask what was shocking about it. But you've answered that in your review.

As I wrote in the other Akkerman thread, this looks like it is Diamine Majestic Blue. The Akkerman inks are most likely made by Diamine but are renamed for Akkerman.

By the way, the ink is not very expensive; € 16,50 for 150 ml.

Yes, it is an excellent offer: fine inks in beautiful bottles for a great price. thumbup.gifthumbup.gifthumbup.gif

I am not 100% sure but I have read somewhere that Akkerman's contracts their inks with Private Reserve in the USA. That's why I see similarities in both of their ink colors. Akkerman's Shocking Blue could very well be the same as DC Supershow Blue and/or Electric DC Blue of Private Reserve but that is just my honest opinion. Cheers!

I, too, was thinking PR has a similar color. It's beautiful! We should all be able to have it :)

Sorry, but Paul Rutte of Akkerman officially denied that these are Private Reserve inks.

But he did neither deny nor confirm that these are Diamine inks. And I'm pretty sure they are from Diamine, but with different names, and maybe some exclusive colours. Shocking Blue looks and behaves like Majestic Blue, including the red sheen. The iron gall ink descriptions sof far sound like Diamine Registrar's Ink. Other colours need yet to bee compared to find out if Akkerman offers some exclusive colours in the line-up or if these are all standard Diamine inks.

Liverpool isn't that far away from The Hague, after all.

It looks exactly like Diamine Majestic Blue but I hope someone with both will give us a comparison. Majestic Blue is my favourite blue ink so (if it is the same) this large, well-designed bottle is right on the money for me.

I visited the shop two weeks ago. They are quite busy shipping these inks all over the world. They even opened a PayPal account for the payments because that had proved a problem before.

So, nothing to keep you from ordering.

Even if this is the same as another brand the price is right and you'll get the fabulous Copier-bottle with it. Almost worth the money on itself. (IMHO)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
