The Doctor Pen

The Doctor Pen! How appropriate a name for Dr. Inkenstein's newest fountain pen acquisition! And it's perfect, or almost, but for one slim quibble.

More on that quibble later--for now pardon my awful southpaw handwriting.

The Doctor Pen is NOS, and sells for about $14 when you can find it, and it writes ---AND looks---like a much, much more expensive model. In fact none of these phone-pictures do it justice.

Is elegant flat-top form with a deep marbled-amber finish makes me go, "Oooo, shiny! Pretty!"

The metal cap closes with a nice 'click' and posts well enough, but makes the pen somewhat heavier to use, which will probably not bother most 'normal' writers.

With its silvertone trim and an unusual, multi-angled nib that is as smooth as anything I've test-driven so far, the Doctor Pen (made, reportedly by Hero) has worked its way into my rotation, in spite of me shying away from thinner pens.

That one slim quibble is indeed its girth. While it's comfortable enough to hold, with Dr. Inkenstein's particular pen-gripping needs, I can'tt see myself writing volumes with this. A letter, a one-page journal entry, sure.

Which is a shame, really, because the nib is SO nice. And the finish. Have I mentioned that the finish is pretty? Shiny?

I'd give it an overall rating of 8/10, only for the personal quirk of liking fatter pens. But I'm still going to use it.

Dr. Inkenstein has a happy.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

That is a really nice looking pen. I love inexpensive pens that look and write like much priceier ones. The finish reminds me very much of the finish on a slender Cross ballpoint I have that has a lot of sentimental value. Would you share where you acquired this pen or a place where I could look to find one similar? I think I may like one myself.

Best,

Mike Truppi

Hi, Doctor is the brand name. Doctor is a sub-brand of the Hero pen Co. Of Shanghai, China. FYI; Other sub-brands of Hero are WingSung and Youth. There may be more but those are the ones i can remember. cheers, BOB

size isnt everything. feelings matter. now apologize to Amber, for hurting her feelings (semi-serious here, actually).

she/he can hear you, you know. Besides, if you emphasize what's bad, that will destroy your own experience.

  • 2 weeks later...

I bought one of these pens after reading this review. I have it filled up with BSB and it starts up no problem every time and lays down a smooth line. The finish isn't the exact color I was hoping it would be but it is still very lovely. I have pretty big hands but this slim pen is fine, I do hold it slightly different than my other pens though.

Thanks for the tip SK! And thanks for the good deal Bob!

A real doctor's pen should make it impossible to write neatly. You'd know if you look at medical notes roflmho.gif

tuttuttuttuttut. my notes are perfectly legible. B)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
