Jottr - The New Budget Competitor To Moleskine

dandelion

Recommended Posts

The new UK based brand JOTTRR has brought a new Moleskine competitor to the market - a version that also happen to be rather affordable. I had the privilege to receive a JOTTRR from the webshop www.thepaperie.co.uk for a review - big thanks! It is promising, but it needs to be improved before it can be called truly friendly.

You find the full review and more pics here on my blog.

Whilst I appreciate this may provide a good alternative to Moleskines, I would hardly call it a budget notebook. The size is comparable with the 13cm x 21cm Mole, and looking on Amazon right now a lined one can be had for £8.86, whilst on the Jottrr website they advertise theirs at £8.95.

I'm also not keen on the fact that they have crammed all three paper types (quad, lined and plain) in one book. Most people have a prefernce for one more than another. This would certainly put me off making a purchase.

Unless they work on the feathering problem, stick to one rule type (or offer several across the range) and drop the price so they are more competative, I'll stick with Moles.

Great review though, Dandelion, its always good to keep abreast of what's out there...

I bought a JOTTRR recently, before reading this thread (though only a couple of weeks ago) and the paper was easily the worst I have ever used in a "premium" journal. Every single ink apart from really robust ones like Lamy Blue Black and Sailor Kiwa-Guro feathered appallingly, despite the paper itself being quite thick. It was completely unusable - far worse than Moleskine.

I'm not saying that the reports here are wrong of course but they are at odds with my experiences, which would indicate that there is a degree of variation in paper quality. Or that I am unusually intolerant. I could not use this journal at all.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
