Michel Perchin

So I've had this pen for about a year now and always wanted to review it but never got around to doing so until today!

Packaging: 6/10

This box set is really disappointing for a pen in this price range. To all of you out there at Michel Perchin, we expect better than this, you should too.

Appearance: 10/10

So getting past the box set, the appearance of this pen is out of this world. Not a detail has been missed from top to bottom and I even love the color, this pen really makes a statement. (Not that I'm looking to make one)

NIB: 10/10

The NIB engraving and performance is about as good as it gets. I will say that the pen is very heavy so its not the most comfortable to write with for long periods of time. Although for me its not an issue as I only take a few notes at work on a day to day basis

Filling System: 8/10

In my opinion a pen in this range should be piston filled, I have no idea why this one is not. The only reason why I haven't rated the filling system lower is that its a pure joy to look at and unscrew this area of the pen.

Cost/Value: 8/10

At nearly a $4000 retail price this is an expensive pen. Is it worth it? That question is different to each person. I bought the pen second hand but personally I would not have paid full retail for it. I do think that Montegrappa's higher end pens are just as nice and a little cheaper. In any event, this pen is certainly a work of art and one of the nicest that I've ever seen. A good discount or second hand is the way to go, at a second hand price this pen is worth it.

Overall Score: 8.5/10

Its hard to give any pen a perfect score, I haven't seen a perfect one yet. The high price, box set, weight, and filling system make this pen less than perfect for me but the appearance definitely makes up for all of the pen's flaws. Other than that I highly recommend it if you want something over the top, this one is tough to beat in that category! I hope you enjoyed the review.

Interesting review. I've held M. Perchin pens in the past and have always been surprised that the pens weigh so much. Once you get past this it is easy to see the many details that combine to form this work of art. Certainly its not for the timid or shy as these pens do make a statement.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
