Diamine Classic Red Review

Recommended Posts

I find it a bit odd that Diamine has waited until fairly recently to release a "classic red" color. Isn't that a color you'd release for the original lineup? Well, it's never too late to go back to basics, I suppose...

The colors are slightly deeper in tone than they appear in the swatches, but look pretty accurate in relation to each other. Specifically --

Rouge Bourgogne is dark pink

Poppy Red is red-orange

Widowmaker is a very deep, dark red (without being maroon)

Classic Red has no orange tones at all

Wow, gorgeous colors. The only red I have is Noodler's Antietam. Not too red, really. But I've never been a red lover. But that Widowmaker and Poppy are attractive.

I thought you had Herbin's 1670? Am I wrong?

Yep, and pretty recently too in an impressive display of hand-drawn art.

I always get a kick out of these "no affiliation" notations when it's blatantly obvious the poster has absolutely nothing to do with the brand, company, etc. beyond being a customer. It must be a feel-good/feel-important thing. So I'll note up front that nothing I write here on this forum is influenced by any financial-gain motivation.

My humble advice: try Diamine Ruby and Monaco Red. They are simply wonderful!

HA! You both have a better memory than I. But it was only a small sample that has since been all used up.

I have this ink and All My Hues' review is spot on. It's not my favorite red, but I do like the vibrancy of the ink.

This is a very nice red. I like the fact it isn't to dark, nor to light. I will be getting a sample to start.I will likely be getting a bottle soon as well depending on how I like the sample.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China. With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters. Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed. And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments.. I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
