Baystate Blue

Baystate Blue is an absolutely wonderful ink. It really stands out and I use it regularly in my Namiki Falcon, which, being a wet writer, serves to enhance this ink's brilliance.

I have it in front of me and, unfortunately, it is impossible to capture its eye-poppingness on the screen.

I agree and always regret that scans, though "accurate" always rob ink of beauty.

What a penmanship!! I'm jealous!! BSB is my BEST blue ever, however we need caution about stain tendency.

Unfortunately, IMO, no scan can capture the beauty of this ink. Thanks, Nathan! notworthy1.gif

I agree, BSB is definitely eye-catching yikes.gif

thanks,

Good review but yet another Noodlers that doesnt 'perform' well enough for me. That said it is a stricking blue.

2 words : WOW and WOW !

Alexandra - nice penmanship (I especially like the upward "flicks" at the end of each letter)

Nice shade of blue although its such a dodgy ink (from what I've read so far anyway)

Mayhaps one day when I'm brave enough I shall give this ink a go in one of my cheaper pens to see how it goes

Have you had troubles? I had flow problems with my Pelikan 200 F nib but it works like a dream in my Falcon.

I had the same hesitation. I thought It would be assigned to my Preppy but since the Preppy went AWOL I worked up the courage to try in my favorite pen and I'm glad I did. It's a good combination.

Beautiful handwriting.

I'm glad you enjoy this ink so much; and I'm intrigued by your finding of no feathering or bleedthrough. Apica is a very high-grade paper; how has it performed on other papers?

It's performed very well. On plain old copy paper feathering is minimal and bleedthrough is the only problem though that too was minimal, even with a wet writer. I've had some skipping on 100% cotton paper (Southworth) but but no feathering. Nor have I had any on Exacompta or Black n' Red. Actually, I have BSB on cotton in front of me now and if I stare hard enough I think I might see the tiniest bit of feathering, but if I have to stare that hard....

WARNING! Do not stare directly at this ink or you may permanently sear its intense blueness into your retina.

This thas been a public service announcement.

Your review sells me on two things.

The slight thickening of your strokes sells me on trying John Mottishaw's Namiki Falcon with the Spenserian approximation modification.

I suppose I will have to buy two pens -- one to fill with Heart of Darkness and one to fill with Baystate Blue.

Enjoy,

Yours,
Randal

The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

You may just have to. I'd like a second Falcon so that I can have two different colors loaded at all times. I'm really sold on that pen.

This ink is very difficult to capture with a scanner. You may have better luck with certain digital cameras. This ink is best appreciated in person. All in all, thanks for adding this ink review to our ink index.

Thanks. Some early reports on this site pointed out bad feathering, but we know this ink has gone through significant tweaks by the manufacturer and I can believe the improvements.

Sounds like I'll have to try it after all :vbg:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
