Recently I had an idea of creating a prototype handmade journal using my own bagasse paper. I thought: why not turn this idea into a reality? And so I approached TMLee, who has an excellent reputation for making hand-made journals well-loved by FP users on this forum.

The photos demonstrate the outcome of our experiment: a TMLee-made journal using Until Utopia paper. Because bagasse is thinner and lighter than the usual stock TMLee uses, there were some challenges in binding bagasse but nothing TMLee's own innovations could not overcome! The journal comes with everything one can expect from TMLee's journals except for the 'bare bone' cover, which was meant as a way to test the robustness of this experimental journal and is unadorned except for my callsign. I deliberately painted the two 'O' to symbolize the black round eyeglasses once prized by the architect Le Corbusier. Any crime of art committed on TMLee's cover design is mine alone :). In any case, you can always select through a range of cover designs from TMLee's own thread on FPN.

The paper has everything one can expect from Until Utopia: fountain pen friendliness and a sustainable source of paper. While the paper is thin, it is nonetheless still exceptionally suitable for FP usage. This suitability converges splendidly with TMLee's thoughtfulness in journal design, where all his journals are bounded in such a way where they can lay flat--a feature not found in many mass produced journals. So what we have here is a high performance but lightweight journal made specifically for the FP user in mind.

And a big Thank You to TMLee for helping me realize this vision! If you like to try one out, please contact TMLee (no affiliations, just a satisfied customer!)

You are most welcome .... :P

How about drawing in the spectacle frames ? haha ...

I am actually rather impressed with the bagasse paper.

Its thin and uncoated but no bleedthru.

... 671 crafted ... one at a time ... ☺️

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
