J. Herbin Supple Sealing Wax, Seals, Handle

GouletPens

Recommended Posts

I'm going to make you make you go to my blog to see the full review, but here's a nice preview for ya! Check out the review on Ink Nouveau.

Although I didn't originally set out to do a J. Herbin supple wax review, that's kind of how it's shaped up! I was actually just messing around with the wax because I was personally interested in it. My friend Sam (the same one I mentioned in the Technoscribe post) came over and we were messing around with our new wax seals. Sam was doing the red "D"s, and I had the silver "G"s (note that Sam has the knack of it a little better than me!).

Making seals looks very interesting. Can't wait to get my hands on some but I know I'm going to make a mess... You should try to make a video demonstrating making seals. That would be quite a challenge. By the way the handles you made are beautiful, nice pieces of work  Do you think using the wax sticks with a wick would be easier to use?

I haven't used the J. Herbin King's Wax (the kind with a wick), but I've used some cheaper wax from Michael's with a wick. It works okay, but it's actually more complicated than just the plain stick. I am in fact going to do a video, as wax stamping is something that would really benefit from a video! I'll work on that today. BTW, wax stamping isn't as hard as you think, and the mess is part of the fun! Many people would say fountain pens are a mess too

Brian, you are going to get me in trouble! I am absolutely convinced that I must buy a seal and a gorgeous customized handle and some green wax... :puddle:

I have always wanted to get a wax seal ring or a something of that nature, and every time I see a sealing wax review and am just that much closer....

Wax seals are something I never thought of as being feasible for me to access and use. These videos and reviews about them have now made me obsessed with having this technology some day!

Hey Brian have you thought of making a wonderful sampler pack for the sealing wax. It would be great to be able to buy a pack of mixed colors!

I have definitely thought of that. I was thinking of mixing and matching 4 packs so you could get whatever colors you want. Still not sure about the logistics of doing that, but when i get it worked out (and when the wax comes in) I'll have it up on my site.

I added a video too (under 4 minutes) you might enjoy, at the bottle of the blog post: http://www.inknouveau.com/2010/04/j-herbin-supple-wax-and-goulet-custom.html

I have no idea what the colour range is for the wax. I have some silver sticks, if it came in a muticolour pack I would have bought some. This could be a good product.

I have used sealing wax on my envelopes on and off for many years. Most sealing wax is too hard for use on envelopes sent in the mail.

Of late years I have not been able to get the soft sealing wax I use to use.Tried some of the new Herbin supple sealing wax and found that it works great.

Using sealing wax on my envelopes is a fun thing to do and adds to the joy of letter writing in my opinion.

Here are the colors of the supple wax, which you can see on my site too.

The waxes are in, and that's all I'll say at the risk of getting this thread moved to Market Watch

So will the custom handles be offered on your site? I like the Indian Rosewood best.

Will you be charging prices by style/wood type? And do you think later you will be adding the

symbol seals to you r inventory?

Prices Stateside are less expensive for the waxes than direct from J. Herbin. Thank you for that much!

Yep! I have them online now, although I've already sold most of them! The price will be around the same, maybe more if it's a more exotic wood or if I've done some special fancy design with it.

I'm open to carrying the symbol seals if the interest is there! I can special order those as well, if someone wants a particular one.

  • 4 weeks later...

I practice making my wax seals on aluminum foil then remelt the wax and use it on my letters. Not a fan of the Michaels wax as it seems very watery. I have yet to try the Herbin Flexible but I am thinking of doing so in the near future. I mix different colors of wax together when I do a seal just for fun and to be different. If I am using stick wax I will melt the little stubs I have left over to the end of a longer one so I dont burn my fingers next time I melt the wax. I say have fun with it!

very cool looking

Extremely cool looking, I am hopeless at getting the wax to form the way I want though. I drip, drag, and make a mess. I think I may have a bad press.

What kind do you have? I was trying to use a homemade acrylic one myself a looong time ago and had endless frustration. After switching to brass, everything changed for the better. I found the cooler the brass, too, the easier it is to make the seal.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
