How is the smoothness of the XF nib? It is rare for people to use the Lamy XFs and some have even complained that they were scratchy etc...

One thing I know for sure, is that the Sailor nibs and other Japanese nibs are really smooth.

However with the wetness of 2000, you're probably enjoying this XF.

I often find myself absentmindedly rotating the pen in my hand as I write and some angles will make the pen extremely scratchy and may even catch on the paper, but when I find the rather broad sweet spot, it's very smooth--not scratchy at all. One thing to note is that the XF isn't really an XF--it's more of an F.

I also really enjoy the simplicity of the pen. My XF is smooth as well. Well, not as smooth as my binderized Pelikan F. It's got a little tooth, which doesn't bother me at all.

Hi Mango

I was just thinking of daiquiris...

Seriously I think not many people call the design ugly. In my understanding it is one of, if not the longest running production fountain pen that has not changed. The 149 was obviously longer but has changed from celluloid to resin etc.

I think the design was very innovative and has certainly stood the test of time.

The main issue over the years has been quality control and sometimes it is good and some years not so good.

My Lamy 2K was the first piston filler I had and it still sits on my work desk as my back up.

Thank you

Yeah for many European nibs, the nibs are scratchy when so smooth. Perhaps people don't really like the F/XF there.

It seems when we use the two metal pieces at the side as a guide, smoothness is there. If not, it's terrible.

Furthermore, I currently have a Lamy 2000 F but it seems the F is like a M. So if most choose M, then they like B in the west?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
