Very nice review, although that castle is almost phallic enough to be nsfw. :P

It's a wonderful black, but has a tendency to feather on all but the best paper.

Also, my go-to Black... In my opinion nothing darker that I have found. I haven't seen a side-by-side comparison of Heart of Darkness v. Borealis. I run it in my Namki Pilot retractable it has some nib creep but it wipes right off (no staining). Flows really well in a finer nib. I get more feathering in a medium nib on low quality paper.

I love HOD! Its the only black I use. I usually have 2 pens inked with it at all times, my workhorse Safari & currently my Namiki VP........smooooth!

Has anybody seen the iron gall ink in the for sale ads? It claims to be super black and i was thinking a comparison would be nice.

I ordered some iron gall ink for use with my dip pen,

but careful not to use it in fountain pens! :yikes:

I recently ordered/received HOD -

a perfect, deep, blackety-black and

the best for addressing envelopes.

Great review!

I have read complaints about Baystate blue staining pens. Has anyone had this experience with HOD? I've just ordered some and would like to know before I stick it into my pens.

Cheers,

So far none of my pen or converters have been stained, BUT I never let a pen dry with HoD filled in ;)

I've used Heart of Darkness in at least a dozen pens (it's my favorite black), and I've not had any trouble with it staining any part of a pen. I find it to be a very easy ink to use, and the density of the black is excellent. Rinsing it out of a pen takes a little longer than rinsing out a "thinner" black ink, but my experience is that it rinses out completely without any great effort.

As JFT notes, you shouldn't let a pen loaded with HoD dry out completely...but then you shouldn't let that happen with any ink.

to revive this thread I rec'd my HoD and have gone through a pen full. I used to write in blue all the time but after using this I'm nearly a convert. What a nice ink, and black - no grey areas here!!!

You also get a bucket of ink in this bottle - my only complaint is I wish the bottle neck was wider for those who want to refill without using the eye dropper.

Lots of wants, limited funds!

Reviving thread again -

With a love of shading I went off HoD - then I got the Ahab. semi-flex plus the dark lords ink of choice = joy.

And despite some starvation problems in my Ahab with other inks, HoD flows like a dream.

I just received my shipment of HoD with free pen from the Goulets. As a lefty, this ink works better for me than Bulletproof black, which I believe has a slower drying time. With the Heart of Darkness, I am eternally on :cloud9:

Anybody use HoD in a TWSBI Vac 700?

Had a small sample and had some issues with it clogging my Lamy Vista up, so wanted to check how it worked with the 700.

This is my go to black.

It's mine too, but I found out by tearing up a TWSBI 540 that you have to clean the pen often. I caused the piston to get stuck and so I had to take the pen apart and soak it over night to get the rubber part of the piston out of the barrel. So now I have it in an eye-dropper pen, which is ok because even here I use enough to have to refill the pen weekly.

OH...and also it is very forge-resistant, I've had several clients try to alter my documents without success.

Would there happen to be any interesting stories behind this? B)

Also, when you guys say that Heart of Darkness feathers I'm not really sure what that means. I've only used Waterman blue, black and Diamine Sherwood Green. Could any of you compare? I would also be using this primarily in a fine nib if I got it which should help I suppose.

Yeah. And I had a bottle and stored it away for that reason. Filled up a pen with it the other day and was reminded how badly it does feather. Even on my checks. On my bagasse notebook paper it's even worse. Back to black. Maybe I'll try X-Feather.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
