Nice looking ink! However, being a regular Waterman Havana Brown user, I doubt I'll purchase an ink that you describe as lighter than Havana Brown. Very informative review, and nicely laid out on the Rhodia page. Thanks!

Beautiful color as it appears on my monitor! (You've been a busy girlieg33k in the PFN test lab today. Five reviews?!)

Have you splashed any water on this ink to see if it's at all water resistant?

Yes, Great review!

I have this color in a cartridge from a multi-color pack from Diamine. It is called "Dark Brown", and appears to be the same. I also got this from The Writing Desk. This combo pack is not available in the states. Pendemonium seems to be the only US distributor of Diamine. They informed me that they could not get the multi-pack.

Frankiex, two corrections:

-- Pendemonium is not the only US distributor of Diamine (Peartree Pens and Art Brown spring to mind, but I know there are others)...

--and Diamine Dark Brown is different from Saddle Brown (everyone jokes that it's misnamed, and that it's not dark at all). As far as I know, Saddle Brown has not been put into cartridges yet.

Girlieg33k, Thanks! I don't need any more browns, but if I ever change my mind, I think this is the one I'd get. Funny, you say there isn't any red tone in it, but it looks like it to me. Is the scan misleading? Is it actually more purplish-brown? How would you compare it to other reddish browns?

Thanks, girlieg33k! I'm glad to hear about the good behavior on 20-lb paper (75 gsm). When you have a moment, could you tell us which paper caused some feathering?

Melnicki, this looks purplish to me, perhaps competing against Cacao du Brésil from J Herbin.

Have you splashed any water on this ink to see if it's at all water resistant?

I wrote up the reviews a week or two ago, but just got around to scanning them the other day. I also like to wait a few days after I write up a review to scan them. I find that by doing so, the real colour comes out.

I haven't done a splash of water yet, but I've not had not much luck with water-resistance with Diamine inks. I'll do water tests of some reviews (not all), particularly if I intend to use the ink for other purposes other than journaling. I'll give this a splash and will report back.

Funny, you say there isn't any red tone in it, but it looks like it to me. Is the scan misleading? Is it actually more purplish-brown? How would you compare it to other reddish browns?

I don't see any red tones in this one. But as you know, colour is very subjective, so maybe someone else who has seen it in person can attest differently. I don't see any red, nor purple. It's comparable, with some slight variations to: Visconti Sepia, Omas Sepia, Conway Stewart Brown, CdA Grand Canyon, and even R&K's Sepia. I'd say it is most comparable in colour to Visconti Sepia and CS Brown.

When you have a moment, could you tell us which paper caused some feathering?

It feathered quite badly in a leatherbound Papyrus journal that someone gave me for Christmas. I was using the journal up until recently and noticed it right away. Oddly enough, it was mostly the Diamine inks that feathered quite badly in the Papyrus journal -- most of the other inks that I used did not (as far as I can recall). I don't usually use Papyrus journals or Papyrus paper, and had someone not given me the journal as a gift, I doubt I would have used it. I use Moleskines for journals.

As far as this having a purple tinge, please see my comments above in my response to Melnicki. I don't see any purple.

Thank you for a good review, girlieg.

I am very much a brown ink person and I have been wondering about this brown ink. I have yet to try any Diamine ink and this one is a good candidate for an initial exploration. I already have and love Visconti and Omas Sepias, and it would be fun to compare these three inks.

Frank, I should be able to leave the office at a reasonable hour this evening (hint: after I type this). Depending on what awaits me at home, I'll try to post a comparison scan of the inks that you mentioned with Saddle Brown -- as well as some other browns/sepias. Second only to blue, I have more browns/sepia ink, so I also happen to be a brown ink person... :)

Oops -- sorry, I forgot all about this... I've just returned home from a short trip. I'll post the comparison scan when I can manage the scanner. I'm a bit knackered at the moment. The comparison was done last week; I just haven't scanned it yet.

OK -- here's Diamine Saddle Brown compared to other browns/sepias in swab samples. I cropped the samples rather than posting the entire scan as one huge image, which would require me to make a thumbnail image and linking it off site in various views.

  • 5 months later...

Though I like other Diamine colours such as Damson and Teal, I just have to come back to Saddle Brown as my main ink. Guess I am a brown ink person at heart

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
